This time, when he agreed to perform another feat of spectacular magic for her, she plopped right down on his knees. Friends? She repeated as he explained about the kings, peering down at them curiously while one tiny white hand tapped her chin. Of course the cards had magic - they were magic cards, after all.
There was a soft click as the lounge door opened.
When Lucas fanned out the cards and pointed to the kings, Azdeif gasped. Oh! Friends! She said, pointing too. Lucas was amazing!
"What are you two doing?" Claire asked, a wry smile spreading across her face as she walked over to the couch.
The word magician! was eagerly pressed into her head as Azdeif floated up to pull on Claire's sleeve. Magic! Lucas could do magic!

"Hey Claire," he greeted, still grinning at the Jirachi's reactions. "Just doing some card tricks. Showing Azdeif a little magic." He squared the cards back together and shuffled them idly. "What's up? Any news back on that mission?" Through some blind miracle, Lucas had avoided overhearing any of the rumors that had been circulating since the team's return. He wasn't even distinctly sure of who had gone. It'd been a long day.

Claire waved away her legendary with a smile before she pulled up a chair to curl up in closer to the couch. Her expression noticeably faltered when he asked about the mission, however. "Oh, that," she said awkwardly, shifting a bit as her purple gaze slid to the floor. "Well... They got Nyx back from the Galactics and stopped their machine. That's why they needed legendaries, they were going to try and re-make the world." She wasn't sure how much of that Lucas had already known, being an elite in Galactic, but she at least knew of the team's lofty goals, so the machine came as no surprise. "But.. well, they.. lost someone," she finished awkwardly with a sad frown. "Aila. She was an agent."
The Jirachi eagerly hovered around Lucas as Claire spoke. Even if she was listening to the agent's words, she wouldn't have understood their meaning. More? She asked the scarred man excitedly, waving one hand at the deck in his hands as if she were trying to reach to pluck a few cards from his fingers.

"Oh s**t!" His brows raised in surprise when Claire explained the aim and success of the mission. He'd known about the legendaries and that they were being used as fuel for some grand scheme, but he'd never heard what that scheme actually was. The scary part was that he didn't even doubt Deimos's ability to carry it out. Thank Arceus that had been put to a stop before it got too far. No man should ever have power to reshape the world in his own image.
All pride in his team and their success was quenched at Claire's finishing statement, and he realized soon that he'd stopped breathing momentarily. "Oh... s**t..." he repeated, though the words carried quite a different tone this time. "That's... damn. Sorry..." He didn't know the agent in question, but it was never fun to hear about anyone who had died, be they a friend, a teammate, or even an enemy. "Did you... you know, know her?" He couldn't even put a face to the name. Damn did he ever feel like an a**.
The Jirachi received a pat on the head and a smile that was more subdued than the one he wore previously, "Maybe later, Azdeif." It didn't seem quite right to play magician at the moment.

While she believed Deimos to be an idiot, she didn't doubt his abilities to create such a horrible machine either. She was glad that they'd managed to destr--
s**t, Azdeif repeated into their minds curiously, her mouth a tiny circle again. Damn? Claire almost facepalmed, but at least the legendary had captured what she was feeling fairly accurately.
"I did.. a little," she said with a furrowed brow as she reached up to tuck a few strands of hair behind her ear. "Not too well, I was never very close to her, but.. She was very kind. A bit formal, but she was a very capable agent." It felt so strange referring to her in past tense.. Poor Aila... "Oh, one of the Galactics died too, though I'm not sure how.." Actually, she did. Somebody had mentioned he'd been shot, but that wasn't exactly a thing she thought best to share with the former assassin who used to do just that. "Did you know Orion..?"

Nngh. Why did Jirachi have to be such little vocabulary sponges? "Those are words that make people sad, Azdief," he said carefully, "so don't say them, okay?" Hopefully that was all that needed to be said on the matter.
"Huh... That's really awful. Sorry..." And here he'd been enjoying a life away from death. There was just no escaping it, no matter where he went. Blue eyes settled on the cards in his lap as he fumbled with them absently. Re-making the world didn't sound so bad if it meant they could create a place where no one had to lose anyone. But that would have been Deimos's call, and leaving the foundations of a new world to his ideals was nothing but foolhardy. Mention of the Galactic death brought his attention back to Claire, and he narrowed his eyes in suppressed regret. Maybe if he had been on that mission he could have done something about the casualties...
"I knew of him," he replied with a sigh. "From what I heard, he spent most of his time on missions, so I never really spoke with him properly. Even so... Allies, enemies, even complete strangers - it's nothing but a shame that those lives had to go to waste..." Maybe that was disrespectful; an agent and a commander surely lived undeniably productive lives for the benefit of their respective teams, but how many more productive years had been destroyed as a result of their deaths?

The Jirachi's mouth formed into another tiny 'o' before she quickly covered it with her small hands. Oh, no! She didn't want to say words that would make people sad!
"Yeah, I know," she sighed, shifting in her seat to rest her elbows on her knees while she studied the floor. "But there's really nothing we can do now..." Except hold a service or something for poor Aila... Did they even do that here, hold.. funeral-type things? She made a mental note to find out if there'd be one and see if she could attend. It w--
"No sad!" The words suddenly erupted into both minds with a scared, desperate tone as the little legend held her hands out in front of her, tiny fingers splayed. "Azdeif sorry! No sad.." She retracted her hands to twist them in front of her nervously, looking from one human to the other. She didn't make them sad, did she...?
"No, Azdeif, it's--"
"No sad..!" The bell-like tone was even more desperate, and Claire just sighed as she pulled the little Legendary to her. It was obvious that the young Jirachi was rather emotional, and had taken saying bad words as the worst thing she could possibly have done.
"I guess I'm gonna go calm her down," Claire said with rueful tones, violet eyes peering down at the trembling little legend in one arm before she offered Lucas a half-shrug, turning her free hand palm-up in a 'what can you do?' gesture before she stood with a small smile. "I'll see you later."

There was something sort of darkly humorous about discussing the death of their teammate with a pokemon sitting there begging them not to be sad over a bad word. It wasn't so humorous that he could laugh, though. The Jirachi seemed to be getting a bit out of control, perhaps picking up on the dismal mood the atmosphere had taken as a result of the subject or something, and Lucas couldn't help but wonder how he could have phrased that better. Clumsy as ever.
"Ah, yeah... See you around," he said, responding to the smile with one of his own and raising a hand in farewell. "And sorry about that..." What a mess... and he didn't necessarily mean the upset legendary. Death never welcomed anything positive, and he wasn't looking forward to whatever was to come.
