The wave broke and scattered around his feet. This time Ferros bit through what felt like a few more little monsters, his screech changing to a satisfied sound, almost like a purr. Quote: Wave: 2Attack Dmg: 5 Total Shadowlings taken out: 9 Recoveries left: 0

The shadowlings were massing just ahead of Jordan, surging into his path. He brought Ferros back and charged ahead, letting momentum sweep the hammer forward and around. Ferros roared exultantly; Jordan could practically see the heat haze shimmering around him. Quote: Wave: 3Attack Dmg: 10 Total Shadowlings taken out: 19 Recoveries left: 0

The sudden burst of flame up the whole tunnel, casting the shadowlings into stark relief. Too many of them froze in terror, and Ferros swept through them like they were nothing. A few were enveloped in fire. They fled, screaming in tiny, high-pitched voices, and burned out like cinders. Quote: Wave: 4Attack Dmg: 17 Total Shadowlings taken out: 36 Recoveries left: 0

As the flames faded, the shadowlings massed again, their chittering layering and echoing in the tunnel. Almost there - but the creatures were piling up ahead of him, and when Jordan swung, there were enough of them to flow up and over the hammer's head, skittering up to latch onto him, tiny claws and teeth insignificant alone, but dangerous, if you let them get on you. He woke up in the observation booth, sore and bleary-eyed. The Hunter on duty smirked at him, then returned to his seat and lapsed back into his half-doze, having apparently not said a word the entire time.
"I'm okay," Jordan said, picking himself up and sighing. "No injuries other than my pride."

The portal transferred them straight to:
A tunnel.
Filled with shadowy creature things.
What the hell..?
It was clear they would have to fight their way across, so Gale stepped back letting Jordan go first.
<< Think you can handle it? >>
Let's hope so.
Jordan was already bashing his way through, swinging the hammer in his hands impressively. It really was a nice weapon; Gale watched it go up, and then back down, crushing several of the little black creatures.
Ah jeez, thought Gale five minutes later, wincing a bit as Jordan went down, the black shadow creatures swarming him like a brush fire. The older Hunter had gotten through a good portion of the things before he'd been taken out, which was rather impressive. Gale was not really certain how well he himself would do; after all, he was not very good at melee attacks, considering the status of his weapon.
<< Well. You ready? >>
Squaring his shoulders, Gale sighed. These things are going to be the death of me.

The first wave of creatures were easily taken out with a few shots from Gale's sniper rifle, the sound of the bullets ricocheting off of the tunnel walls.
"These things are creepy," muttered Gale, kicking his foot out and sending one flying. He spun the rifle in his hands around, using it as a bat of sorts to hit several square across their fronts.

Several more of the creatures had come swarming towards him. Gale gave a shout of irritation, shoving them off, then leaping backwards, readying the rifle.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
This went on for a few more seconds until he had managed to get rid of the closest ones.

There was a flash of blinding white light as the end of Gale's rifle glowed brightly. Then, with a resounding crack, the bullets exploded from the barrel, careening throughout the room like tiny, icy fireworks as they collided with the shadowy creatures.
Feel better now?
<< Much. >> came the satisfied sounding response. The coldness of the rifle began to recede, the pale blue smoke at the end of the rifle beginning to dissipate.Status Wave: 4Attack Dmg: 15 Total Shadowlings taken out: 32. Recoveries left: 0.

He hadn't realized he'd made it through to the end of the tunnel until he found himself no longer in it.
"Oh. Well, then."
After a few seconds of blinking, startled by the sudden end, Gale shrugged and then made his way to the nearest recovery room to find Jordan - which he did, relatively easily.
"Hey," he said, flicking his hand. The sniper rifle disappeared, resuming his unsummoned form as a ring on Gale's left index finger, and Gale walked over to the bed, smiling.
"You doing all right? You were pretty badass down in that tunnel. The hammer thing was pretty awesome."

"Thanks," Jordan said, getting up and smiling a little sheepishly. "You made it through, huh? One up on me." He offered a congratulatory handshake.
Of course I'm awesome, Ferros said loftily.
Jordan laughed. "Ferros says of course he's awesome, which probably translates to thank you in some form."

"Yeah, well," said Gale, with a rather abashed shrug. "Only because I got lucky. Most of the time I'm not nearly as fortunate - as made clearly evident by the fact that I've died twice," he added, with a roll of his eyes.
He reached out and shook Jordan's hand, then slipped his into his pockets, rocking back on his heels. There was a momentary pause, and then he said, a little more seriously:
"Thanks for letting me train with you. Well, I mean," he added, letting his shoulders rise and fall. "For, er...not treating me like a four year old kid who doesn't know what he's doing."
<< Clearly I'm better than that other dragon. >> said Jinhai, apparently paying no heed to the conversation after the comment from Jordan's weapon.
"And Jinhai says, er, thank you as well," said Gale, with another roll of his eyes.
<< I did no - >>
Hush up, you.

Jordan shrugged a little and tucked his hands into his own pockets. "You went through the tests like the rest of us, and Jinhai clearly thought you were capable. Doesn't really matter that you're younger. You're a Hunter." He laughed a bit. "I figure that all of us, the trainees anyway, are about the same level of incompetence. We'll get better."
He lifted one hand to push his hair back, remembered abruptly that the ponytail wasn't there anymore, and stuck his hand back in his pocket with a sigh. "What's your division's course like? I haven't had a look at it."

"Doesn't really matter that you're younger. You're a Hunter."
The words rang in Gale's head, his eyes widening just the slightest. However, his expression shifted quickly, relaxing into one of amusement. "Yeah, well," he said, and laughed. "According to our delightful leader - well, my leader, really, but he has a habit of being everywhere - we all suck and are pathetic."
"And Jinhai's just...Jinhai."
<< I beg your pard - >>
"Anyway," Gale said loudly, overriding the weapon's outraged protests. "My division course is, er...well, it's certainly interesting. It involves a lot of guesswork, really. Kind of like minesweeper, only real life. Step on the wrong tile, and - " He lifted his hands in an exploding gesture. "Boom."
