"I don't know," he admitted. "Could you change who you were? What you believed? How you react to things?" he asked her. "Just for a crush? Nah, all in all it's better to get over the crush and be who you are--even if you're still kind of figuring out who exactly that is. So..."
He leaned forward. "I want to get a crush on someone else, or at least focus on someone else for a bit. Which is why... you think you could teach me to flirt?"

The reaper leaned forward as well, resting her head in her hand. Wow. Roch was saying a lot of things that just made sense. Hel’s expression looked troubled yet thoughtful. She had wanted to work on being a better friend…did that require changing herself…could she change herself? She didn’t know. It seemed like whenever she’d tried she’d just fall right back into the same pattern and upset those around her…
Hel sighed.
She was going to stew in these thoughts some more…until Roch asked her something completely out of the blue. Hel looked surprised. “…Teach…you how to flirt?” She repeated, as if she wasn’t hearing him right.

"Well, yeah," he said. "You're a ghoul, so you should know what ghouls like in boils, right? What words to say, how to approach them, stuff like that. It isn't that I'm lookin' for something serious, or anything, it's just... I might as well learn some stuff, right? And it'll get your mind off whatever you ain't tellin' me!"
Wait, what? Did he actually just--
"C'mon! What do you think is the first thing a ghoul looks for in a guy?"

Hel was getting thrown into uncharted waters, and fast. In a test to see if she could sink or swim…she had a feeling she was about to sink. You knew who was really good at flirting? Freya. “Uh…well…you know friend…maybe you should ask my sister because she’s very knowledgeable about that…” Hel paused, and then vigorously shook her head. “Wait, no, don’t ask her. It’s a game for her.” The reaper made a sour face, and then looked flabbergasted when Roch said to get her mind off of what she wasn’t telling him.
What!?
And then he moved onto a different subject. Oh sweet Sally…she was thrown for a serious loop. Was she being obvious!? She’d have to keep this under more wraps…
“Well…uh…” Hel was grasping at straws, this wasn’t good! “…Uh…battle prowess!” She suddenly declared. Now, Roch should be aware that this was ‘What to look for in a man – Valkyrie 101’. “…Kindness…? Compassion…um…a good sense of humor…”

"Battle prowess? You mean kicking a**? In other words I have to spar with them?" he said. "Nah. If I like a ghoul I don't think I could fight properly. Kindness, compassion, sense of humor, okay... but how do you get that sort of stuff out at the first meeting without looking like a fake?" He shook his head.
"Why don't we start with somethin' easier? Like how to walk? Or dress, or how to go up to a ghoul without coming off as a creep?"

“Uh…no, no!” Hel waved her hands a bit. “No, you don’t fight the ghoul! Well…you could! But uh…when I look at others…if I do not think they are capable warriors...then they uh…might not have my respect…” The ghoul was baffled as she looked at Roch. “…I have seen those things in the first meeting before, and they didn’t look fake to me…”
But then he switched the topic again…and she was okay to try struggling along with it.
“…Wait..wait, wait!” Hel called, waving her hands at him again. “Didn’t you just say that you shouldn’t change who you are? So why are we discussing how to walk, dress and approach someone? Wouldn’t that be changing who you are?”

"Nah, that's superficial s**t," Roch said honestly. "I change the way I walk all the time. There's the 'don't care if I'm being watched' walk, and the 'I'm not here' walk, and the 'super silent' walk. There's overly punk clothes and there's vaguely punk clothes, as long as I can keep my piercings I don't mind either style. And I'm thinking of growing the top part of my hair out, get one of those longer hawks, y'know? Amrita likes to make me wash the gel out so she can play with it, so--"
He shrugged. Obviously changing little stuff like that didn't seem like changing himself to him.

The valkyrie just stared at Roch. It was a mix of surprised and fascination. He was just so honest and so blunt…it was refreshing! A good upbeat attitude too. He rolled with the punches. She listened to him as he went on about different walks, but there was something about some of his last words that snapped her back to attention.
“Ah…hold it there friend.” Hel’s brows furrowed. “…Xiu…Amrita…those are some very lovely ghouls you’re associated with.” Her brows furrowed more. “…And you’re inquiring about how to flirt, why?”

His face fell and he looked down at the ground--was that--was that a POUT on the punk boy's face? Yes, yes it was! His fingers toyed with a piece of dead grass, bending it back and forth before pulling it out entirely. "Ah... well..." he said slowly. "Amrita's just a friend," he told her first.
"And Xiu... mighta been the one that turned me down," he muttered.

Hel blinked as Roch pouted. “Uh…” Aww…the boil seemed…dejected now? The ghoul reached out to pat his shoulder comfortingly, pausing when he seemed to mutter something. Hel leaned forward a bit, trying to decipher what he said. Xiu…might have…what? Turn him down? What did she do that for—
Oh.
She got it now. She did recall Roch getting rather flustered when she had mentioned that Xiu would make a good wife one day. It all clicked into place now, and suddenly the reaper seemed to be a bit of kinship with the punk reaper. Turned down. Looked over. She felt in the same boat, though it may have not been the exact same circumstances. “…Ah…I am sorry, friend.” She murmured patting his shoulder once more before her hand dropped to the side. She imagined Xiu had her reasons. The baku was a very good ghoul, so if she had turned down Roch, it had to have been for a good reason, even if it was a hurtful one. “…Some things are…just not meant to be at this time?”

"Yeah, that sounds kind of like what she told me," he told her, giving her a tiny smile that didn't reach his eyes. "What... what about..." He frowned, his mind rushing. "How about this," he said abruptly. "We have a pretend date, and every time I screw up, you tell me? We could start with the approach and everything!"
He looked around, almost seeing the boogies watching them. He didn't like what the school had been turned into, and the less time on campus, the better. "Wanna go to the maul?"

“…Oh.” Oops! She didn’t mean to remind Roch of that but…uh…at least it made sense, what Xiu said to him now! Hel rubbed the back of her neck, looking at Roch curiously as he seemed to suggest something. Once again, Hel looked flaberghasted at his suggestion. “A…a pretend date?” The reaper spluttered. Holy Jack! She’d never even been on a real one before! How was she supposed to know what to do!? Sure, she may have peeked at some gossip and romance magazines but that wasn’t going to help! Now he was suggesting going to the maul?
Okay…just…fine. She was going along for a rather crazy ride….at least it was taking her mind off of current events for now.
After a moment, Hel pushed herself up from the tree roots and stood, placing her hands on her hips with a resigned sigh. “Alright. I’ll try to help you to the best of my ability.” She was a sucker for helping out her friends.

"Sweet," he said cheerfully. "But don't hold back, if I screw up, or say something that irritates you, you gotta tell me, okay?" he said as he headed for the path that led off of school grounds. It was a great excuse to get off the campus grounds and away from boogies... y'know, except for the one that probably was following them.
Was Roch paranoid? Yes, yes he was. But with good reason.
He headed for the Maul, his hands in his pockets, making small talk about music and stuff as his mind examined all the things he figured should happen on a date. He'd... never actually been on a real date, so he probably would disappoint her a lot. Good thing it wasn't a real one.

Hel gave a short laugh. “No worries friend. I don’t hold anything back if it irritates me.” Yep, the ghoul was sorely lacking a shut off switch. She followed along with the grim reaper, swinging her arms idly as she made small talk with him, enjoying conversing about music. It was nice to speak to another reaper who was musically inclined!
Eventually they made it to the maul, and one way or another, they winded up in the food court. It was here, standing near a wall with her arms cross, that Hel looked a bit baffled once more as she waited for Roch to approach her. Why was she doing this again? Oh yeah…because she wanted to help out. Now that they were actually here though…things seemed kind of silly…but Hel did her best to keep it serious…er…as serious as she could at the moment…

This... was a really stupid idea, Roch thought as he looked down at his clothes, straightening his vest and wincing slightly as he rubbed his wound. But hell, he thought as he turned to head towards the other reaper, it was a more entertaining way to spend a day than at the school!
"Hi," he said, giving her a too sharp grin. He leaned against the wall next to her, crossing his arms over his chest. "So... you some sort of fallen angel? Cuz I think I've gone to heaven."
Oh jack--nope, Roch started cracking up, himself at that one. "Sorry, sorry," he said, holding up a hand. "That was terrible."
