B U R N . B A B Y . B U R N Her awakening had left Phoenix with too many questions and far too little answers. So here she was, sitting on a park bench in a getup waiting for those answers to descend upon her. It was night time so people weren’t out in large numbers to see her in what she wore. Her costume reminded her of a film she’d seen, Marie-Antoinette inspired. It would have been nice if she’d been able to choose her own outfit, she would have gone with something a little more modern than this. She didn’t even think the style of shoes she wore existed in this era.
Her eyes turned to a pair of boys who had just entered the park, hoodie up and passing objects between them. They both glanced at her before going to the jungle gym and disappearing into the maze of metal. A few minutes later one of them got out and walked right out of the park, Phoenix noticed that other one emerge and sit on the playground watching her. All of it made her skin crawl, had she just seen a drug deal getting done? But what was more unnerving the fact one had stayed behind and was staring at her. That was the creepiest part, but maybe it had something to do with her outfit?
Either way, Phoenix decided to ignore him and even turned her head in the other direction to avoid eye contact. It was only when the other got of the jungle gym and started heading her way did she turn to look at him. He was approaching her, Phoenix didn’t know whether to run or stay where she was. Only a prey ran though, so she decided to sit calmly where she was. He continued until he was sitting beside her and finally turned to her.
“Nice costume.”
“Thanks.”
“You uh… You one of those girls?”
“Excuse me?” Phoenix turned to him with an incredulous expression on her face.
“You look like one of those girls.”
He drew closer to her, and Phoenix moved back.
“Look, I don’t want any trouble.”
He sneered at her, and Phoenix decided she’d had enough and she was getting up when he grabbed onto her arm.
“No one dresses like that.”
“Let me go.”
Phoenix tried to pull away but he laughed and pulled her onto him, she stumbled and came face to face with him. She looked into his eyes; there was something crazy in them. Ava began to struggle but as much as she did the closer he got to her even if she leaned far back. Then he put his hand on her waist and pulled her on to his lap. Something snapped within her, and she let the heat building inside of her mingle with her fear and unleashed it.
She thought she’d been unleashing her furry or strength to get away from him, but she never knew what happened instead she finally felt the cold and let it take her into the darkness. When she awake shivering on the ground, the guy was steaming, his skin red as if he’d been out hours in the sun. Had she done this? Had she hurt him? Her fear coiled within her, its dark eyes staring back at her, but it was this man’s eyes she saw at the head. She needed to get back home; Ava returned to her usual self and ran home in the darkness of the night. She didn’t want this, why had they given this curse to her?
