Out of the corner of her eye, Mya felt the gentle instinct to comfort come forth even when the admiring sight of two eggs moving on the sands would have normally demanded attention.
Carefully sliding around her fellow female comrades, the brunette reached out and placed a warm hand on Persephones' shoulder. Sad, she was too. If anything, she wanted to have an open expression of grief like this young one had-
But strong she had to be indeed. "I know you're sad, but think of it this way." She kept her voice low even as the handsome bronze came unto the world with the air of a princeling. "Keep a happiness in your heart. Yours might be here today and would you want to greet him/her with a heavy heart and tears in your eyes?" Mya smiled and gave the shoulder a gentle squeeze before pulling away a bit. "The time for mourning is after the Hatching. Find happiness in the fact that she brought these wonderful being to us and stayed with them until the very end."

The first egg was a Bronze. Jordan almost heard the sigh of relief sweep through the crowd. And... after a moment of child-like hesitation at his mother's apparent displeasure, the Bronze headed straight for the boys with an entirely unnecessary amount of snobbishness. Jordan raised an eyebrow but then looked back at the other eggs. Not his problem. Bronzes weren't for him. He was keeping an eye on the other eggs that were rocking, like the Quick Sparkle. The smaller ones that held potential for him.
He glanced cautiously at Yirath again. Was she going to make each child question their decision like that? Or would she eventually just lose it and go for them? For a moment, Jordan debated whether or not he could lift one of the smaller eggs, then questioned his own sanity. If she attacked the Candidates, he could only hope he was fast enough to get out of the way and make it to the exit.

Even the normally laidback Bannen was unsettled by the current events in the weyr. The loss of their Weyrwoman was...disturbing, let alone right before the Hatching--right after the candidates had first gotten to step on the Sands, even. His brother had taken it harder (Kanen always took these sorts of things harder) and thoughts of glory and Impression and making a name for oneself had been tempered by trying to comfort his twin. Eyeing Yirath now with the rest of the candidates, though, Bannen had to wonder if maybe being upset wasn't the right of it. He remembered the powerful, slightly unsettling gold from the day of the Touching, protective and proud of her gold egg, proud of the whole clutch. And now... She was a shell. It wasn't right for her to linger like this, but she had to stay to see her eggs to hatching. And the Candidatemaster was right--Yirath might look awful now, but if she perceived a threat in any of them, Bannen guessed the retribution would come swiftly. There'd been enough blood, they didn't need more spilled on the Sands today...
He joined the boys' line with the others, sticking close to his identical twin Kanen's side. He might need the support of a sibling... But the young man's eyes were drawn immediately to the rocking eggs, both of them ones he had noted at the Hatching. He was faintly amused the Quick Sparkle, so eager to hatch, was beaten to the goal by the Gilded Verdant--and my, my, was that a beautiful bronze. Yirath's savage snarls and rumbles couldn't tear Bannen's gaze from the hatched dragon for more than a moment or two, and if this bronze was any indication of the rest of the clutch, it would be marvelous indeed. At least Yirath could leave a legacy to be envied.

The eggs would hatch. There wasn't a choice about that, Eliaza knew, but it was a hard thing to even contemplate with the Weyrwoman gone and Yirath's rage and sorrow hanging heavy over the Weyr. She'd learned to be much stronger since Halifanth had found her and the two of them could distract themselves when needs be with duties and drills and chores, but she still had a heart.
There wasn't a question that the pair would attend the Hatching, not even for the second. It was the least, the very least, that they could do to honor the Queen who had held on and lingered for the sake of the clutch. And it was a glorious clutch, a legacy to be proud of, for the dragon and the Weyrwoman and the Weyr all at once. So Halifanth and Eliaza came when the humming started. She stood by Hali, a hand gentle on her green's neck, and settled in to watch and see what came of the day.
----
To say that Cormeric's spirits had been dampened by the murder was an understatement. The tall young man had hardly cracked more than a half-smile in days. Not angry or withdrawn so much as completely stunned, a little overwhelmed, and entirely uncertain about what would happen next.
When the humming started and they were rounded up from the barracks and marched toward the sands, Cormeric found himself more nervous than he'd been in a good long while. What would happen today? Would Yirath even allow them near the dragonets at all? Would their mother's mood impact the way the new hatchlings chose their lifemates? All questions that couldn't be answered until they stood in the thick of the thing and the day proved out. Still, his palms were sweating and he felt just the slightest bit out of breath.
States not helped by poor Yirath's appearance or the sharp glint of her temper. Oh yes, he'd heed the candidatemaster and stay out of the way. He lined up, shoulder to shoulder and a head taller than some of the other boys, and waited, watching eggs and Queen with as much of an equal share of attention as he could manage.
And then the first egg hatched and a bronze spilled out and he couldn't help but smile, just enough. The first hatchling was a bronze? There'd been tragedy in the days before, but a bronze first! That was nothing but good luck and a good sign of things to come.

The hand at her shoulder nearly caused the sorrow filled teen to jump, she had been glancing towards the handsome bronze and the wobbling egg that threatened to spill from it’s shell within a moment. Then the words came just moments after the rumbling of the queen. Persephone couldn’t help it, she wore her emotions on her sleeves however this lass beside her presented a silver lining to the events at hand. She was right, so very right. What if hers was here, she shouldn’t meet it with sadness, today, this moment was meant for jubilation.
Twisting at her waist Persephone reached beside her and claimed the unknown girl’s hand and squeezed it gratefully. “Thank you so much--- I needed to hear something like that today.” With that she gave a brightened smile then begrudgingly let go of the comfort of the touch. She honestly didn’t know what else to say, but she knew that she would cease her tears. Folding her hands in front of her the shorthaired brunette fiddled with the sand at her toes. Today was the day that she had been waiting for. Today was a day of joy and she needed to remember that.

Analyssa had been attending dinner when the humming had started. Excusing herself she had hurried to change into her robes. Ever since Kestril's death, the Weyr had been a solemn place. Listening to the speech, Lyssa moved to her place. Immediately, three eggs were ready to make their enterance into the world.
A bronze! What a good sign. She looked to see Ja'syn up in the Stands with others. Clenching her fists, the candidate could only Hope that this Impression would go smoothly.

This was... all too tragic. The days since the Weyrwoman's death had been filled with much turmoil, emotions Weyr-wide ranging everywhere from grief to deep rage. The sound of Yirath's cries alone was enough to mar anyone emotionally. Seeing her as she was now though was positively heart-breaking. No dragon should ever need to go through such suffering, and it pained him so deeply to see their once beautiful queen withering away and half-mad with grief. He wanted to cry, but now was not the time for such a luxury. There was already a young bronze out on the Sands, and they needed to at least stay strong for the Hatchlings. He was at least glad to have his brother beside him.

Tsubari heard the humming and knew that the eggs were about to hatch. Even with Tsubarisk around, the handler still loved to see the dragons Impress. This day was going to be a sadder day than most. Knowing that Yirath will go Between soon after all her children hatch put a mild hush on the people of the weyr it seemed. Yes there was talk, but it was a saddness that surrounded the area too. He still kicked himself for allowing something like that to happen. A murder should not of happened with him, Tsubarisk, Erie and her wher on duty. It was enough to drown ones pride in drink and forget it happened. Thankfully they were still busy with training or else it might not of been so good for him.
He made his way to the other part of the stands and spotted young Alain standing almost as far away without being rude from the eggs and Yirath. The poor boy, Tsubari knew in his heart that Alain would be a great Rider, better than a handler. An egg hatched and it was a wonderful bronze. A smile emerged and he watched the candidates squirm a bit at the Golds growl.

Nemmol felt like someone had heard his hopes and replied to them. A Bronze. This Hatching, if you went by superstition, was going to be a strong one. Large, plentiful in eggs, and a Bronze as first hatchling. If the Weyrwoman was still alive, she would be pleased. This would make up entirely for the last Benden Clutch, the one that had been so weak.
Yirath rumbled and even Nemmol looked away from the hatchling to cast a quick look at the Queen. When she only directed the Bronze back to his task, Nemmol checked to see what the Bronze would do. He shook off the moment and continued towards the boys with a proud arch to his neck. Nemmol smiled slightly. Haughty little thing, but at least that would help him be a strong asset to the weyr one day. Bronzes should be aware of their position, after all. This little one might be the Weyrleader's dragon one day. Nemmol watched the Bronze approach the male Candidates. This might not be Nemmol's partner, but Nemmol wasn't about to discount any Bronze or Brown that came from any of the eggs. One of them was to be his life partner. If not in this Clutch, then the next one.

As the handsome young bronze stalked on towards the boys, the placement of the Quick Sparkle egg necessitated his passing it. It was clearly too small to contain a bronze so he spared it barely a glance. Below his notice. Just as he stepped past it however it all but exploded, and a beautiful shining blue leapt to his feet with a trill aimed to captivate attention: he was big and gorgeous and he knew it! As the bronze continued to ignore him his eyes flashed orange for a moment and with an indignant bellow he bounded forward to stand in his brother's path, flaring his wings and trilling again; he would be acknowledged! How could the silly bronze possibly not see how much better he was than, well, everyone?
Giving a growl the bronze lowered his head and flared out his wings before stalking onward. As the blue didn't move out of his way, the smaller dragonet was bowled over by the heavy thump of the bronze's shoulder. Jumping back to his feet right away the blue shuffled his wings and huffed. Fine, clearly the bronze was just too stupid then! Taking just a moment to give the other hatchling's retreating back a very dirty look, the blue seemed to put his sibling out of mind before setting off towards the female candidates with another attention-grabbing trill.

Oh my....
After giving the lass a return squeeze of the hand, Mya had looked up just in time to see a rather....em....explosive and showy jump into the world. She covered her mouth with her hand lightly as the blue tried to get his princeling brother to admire and acknowledge him.
Only to get a cold shoulder and hide-meets-sand maneuver. Okay, now she couldn't help it. Mya had to let out a soundless chuckle, especially at that look little brother sent older brother. It reminded her so much of the boys she knew when growing up.
He was handsome though. Mya would admit that. And surely His would give him the attention he wanted and vocally craved. Again, she chuckled.
Boys would be boys, no matter the species.

Seeing movement among the eggs, Kahar relaxed a little as he saw the first two eggs hatch. A bronze and a blue, both looking healthy and full of life. It was certainly a refreshing contrast to see compared to the tragedy that was surrounding the whole situation. It was also amusing to watch their antics in the sands.
Still shifting a little, a faint smile crept to his lips as he watched the young dragons. In the very least, the hatchings were sort of helping his mind off of the darker things. Hopefully it was doing the same for the rest.

Lilah was in no particular hurry to get to this Hatching, even more so than usual. Hatchings were dangerous enough, but this one was far more depressing than usual - and, apparently, even more dangerous. Yirath was understandably...unbalanced. As ever, the girl took a spot in the very back of the group of girls. No view was worth being first in line for a mauling.

Alain watched and smirked as the bronze walked past one of the smaller eggs, only to have it explode open, showing the world a blue. He couldn't help but watch as the newest one demanded to be known by the bronze, including the look as his older sibling walked away. The price it was to be a little sibling. No matter, the blue was a wonderful looking dragon.
He looked up and noticed that Tsubari was in the stands. After the Impression, Alain planned to go find out what Tsubari thought of the hatching. He turned back and watched as the smaller male thrilled at the females. A soft laugh escaped as he thought of how much they reminded him of the human siblings.
