Malodore sighed, outwardly this time, then opened its beak in a wry smile. "I am sorry, Hel - it is simply a bit difficult for me to talk about. I have shared it only with one other person outside of the Casa Cirurgien.... Brynhild would have known me as Loreto. I took care of her for quite some time. I... ah... healed her, in the end."

As it spoke, it tensed, making its metallic feathers rattle against each other.

The reaper looked up at the plague doctor as it sighed, her brows furrowing in concern as she felt into step with it on their way back to the Academy. “…Ah…I…don’t understand, friend…” The ghoul started, reaching up to rub the back of her neck. She thought it was wonderful that Malodore had saved Brynhild, and she was immensely impressed by this as well. The plague doctor seemed anything but proud of its accomplishment, and that was what bothered her.

Hel seemed a bit sheepish as she offered a tentative grin up at it. “Ah…I’m not saying I want to pry into your life story but…well…for such a great deed you have accomplished you…don’t seem very pleased by it.”

"My superiors within the Casa were not pleased by my actions. It's why I am here, rather than within those walls," Malodore said, ducking its head again. "But when I saw you, your wings, I had to ask. I wanted to know... I think. I was not expecting you to know her, truly... I am sorry."

The hand on the back of her neck stayed where it was, continuing to rub at the skin as she tried to wrap her mind around why Malodore seemed so…sad? The reaper thought it should be pleased it had saved a life, but its tone and words were quite the opposite to her, and that she couldn’t grasp. Why did things have to be complicated, and why was it saying sorry? The ghoul’s brows furrowed.

So…you…” Hel started, pursing her lips before stopping. “Uh…” Ugh, you know when all else fails, it was time to just be blunt! “…Do you regret that decision, friend?” The reaper just outright asked, her hand falling down to her side as she stared up at the plague doctor.

"No!" The response was immediate. "No, I do not, I am simply..."

It paused, then opened its beak in a wry smile. "I am simply being very foolish, mi dispiace. I had believed that what I did for Brynhild was right, even though all those around me said it was wrong... but it was difficult, even so. But I would do it again, if I had to. There is no question."

Hel blinked, staring up at Malodore before a wide grin broke out across her face.

Okay, she was happy now! The reaper gave a firm nod of her head in agreement. “I’m pleased to hear that!” She cheered, placing her hands on her hips as they walked along. Hel fell into a thoughtful silence for a moment before uttering, “You’ve touched another life…you’ve done something worth leaving behind…She’s not going to forget you for as long as she lives, and this story that involves you and her will be passed down to her children and the generations to come…”

This seemed to please Hel greatly, as she smiled so wide it almost split her face in half and she made a happy sound. “Are you happy to be here?”

Malodore bobbed its head in infinite relief. "Ah, grazie, molto grazie - I had always hoped that she, too, would see it that way. And her family as well... I am glad I have not done her a disservice through my actions."

At her next question, Malodore looked a bit taken aback. "Si, yes, I am indeed... my whole life has changed. Even my name. For the first time in years, I am able to be myself without hiding."

Hel wondered what language the plague doctor was speaking. She wasn’t familiar with it, but she liked it! It sounded really nice. The reaper just grinned. “Saving a life can never be a disservice, friend!”

The ghoul swung her arms now as they walked back towards the Academy. “That is most wonderful.” She murmured appreciatively. To be one’s self…ah…that was something she was aspiring for. “…I am happy to be here too…heh…ah! Would you mind stopping by the reaper dorms with me? I have something to show you!”

"Ah... si, certainly!" Malodore tilted its head to one side as it followed Hel, bringing one hand up to keep its hat firmly in place. "I have never been to the Reaper dormitories, I confess. Generally I am either in my own dormitory or the Demon dormitory." It felt quite relieved that Hel was so kind, but it was a bit confused about what she might possibly have to show it.

Still... "Have you been with us long? I feel I would have noticed you sooner, had we been in classes together." Her coloring was most distinct!

Hel grinned as Malodore agreed to accompany her, and thus lead the way to the reaper dormitory. How exciting, she’d be able to show it around! “I’ve been to the Demon dorms too!” She commented, “It’s a good place to glide from when you’re carrying a friend…” She didn’t care so much for the elegance of it though. “Ah…” Hmmm…so Malodore wasn’t a demon…and it didn’t look like a ghost…so…undead, then? She hadn’t been to the undead dorms yet…

Ah, not long, friend! A few weeks to a month now, I suppose…” She thought she recalled catching glimpses of the plague doctor in a few classes…but those classes had been so hectic and action packed, it was kind of hard to socialize. Oh well! Hel skipped up the steps leading to the reaper dorms and held the door open for her new friend. “My room is on the third floor, I hope that’s not a problem?”

"No, of course not," Malodore assured her, looking around curiously. It gave the sconces on the walls vaguely suspicious looks, but the flames were all sheltered in glass, much to its relief. "It is fortunate, then, that we chanced to meet - were we in a classroom setting, I do not know if I would have been so bold as to inquire about your acquaintances." No, no, it probably wouldn't have been. Talking to a stranger about its past was one thing, but talking about it in front of people it actually knew? Never. Never. Riley knew; that was enough for now. It had no desire to be a spectacle.

Hel led the way through the common room and then to a staircase, starting the ascent to the third floor. The reaper kept glancing back at Malodore as she climbed the stairs, and gave an energetic nod of her head. “I think some things happen for a reason, yes? When it is the right time and place to do so!” Once they reached the third floor, the ghoul moved down the hall until she eventually reached her room, unlocked the door, and then pushed it open.

The valkyrie marched inside, beckoning the plague doctor with a waving hand. “Come in, friend, come in! I now need to find it…” Hel’s room very much had a Nordic feel, from the rustic and hearty looking wood furniture, the quilt on her bed, the tapestries and parchments hanging on her wall, and to the loom that sat in the corner of her room. It was to the bed she went, flopping to the floor as she reached underneath it and then pulled out a small wooden chest. Hel riffled through the contents with a purpose until she found one in particular. “Ah, yes!” She cheered, leaping up to her feet and returning to the plague doctor with the item held out to it.

It was a Polaroid picture, with two valkyries in it, one easily recognizable as Hel, and the other, a smaller, fair, younger valkyrie by the name of Brynhild. “This was taken a few months ago!”

The curious looking around continued. "Your room is lovely," it said, with genuine interest. "Very interesting decor. It is common to your people, this style?"

But all its questions went completely out the window when she held up the picture. Malodore froze, then reached for the picture with slightly shaky claws. "She... she's beautiful," it whispered. "Molto grazie, amica..." The sight of her standing there, photographic evidence that what Hel said had been true... well, it hadn't doubted her, but seeing the image really made everything hit home. Brynhild was all right. She was happy.

It didn't realize it was weeping until a tear slid out from under its lenses and splashed on the picture. "Ah! Oh... mi dispiace-"

Hel was beaming was Malodore complimented her room. “Why thank you, friend!” She returned happily, giving a nod of her head. “Yes, this is very common to us valkyries!”

After holding out the picture, Hel let the plague doctor take it from her, resting her hands on her hips as she watched it. The reaper was aware she was not witness to a rather emotional moment. Oops, she didn’t mean to make it cry! The ghoul brushed a thumb across her nose sheepishly, glancing off to the side after she caught sight of a tear. “Ah…no, I’m sorry friend…it wasn’t my intention to make you cry…Heh.” She looked back up at Malodore, smiling encouragingly as she waved her hand a bit. “Don’t worry about it, it’s alright! Um…if you want, you can have that picture…”

"Are you certain?" Malodore held the picture close, as if it were a precious treasure. "I would be honored to keep it for you... and ah, no, it is not your fault. I was not expecting to weep, myself. It is only that now I can truly believe she is well." It opened its beak in a smile.

"Molto grazie."
