With a laugh, Russ flicked his tail at Ryu. "Hey, I was the one who told you to choose. Don't start second guessing yourself or having someone else decide for ya." Grinning, the dark colored fox headed in the direction of the deer.
"Now, first what you gotta do is look for tracks that you know aren't coming from a fox. That'll let you know, if you're ever in a place that you aren't familiar with, if there's game around to hunt. That is, if you like the taste of meat. And the tracks sometimes, if they aren't ruined by others, can tell you which direction they went."

Lilac nodded, glancing around. He swung his tail back and forth as he pawed around, poking aside bushes and nodding. "These?" He pointed to what were deer tracks, though old ones. Glancing up at Russ his eyes flicked back and forth, spotted another set of tracks (fresher ones) and yipped to Russ.
"These, too?" He asked, head tilting. "Which set should we follow? Are they deer tracks?"

Russ went over to where Ryu was staring at. He grinned. "Good eye! Those are definitely the tracks we're looking for." Russ studied the tracks himself. "Before we follow one, we gotta see which are the fresher ones. Older ones are good in that they tell us that at least some deer have come this way at one point or another. Just because they're here though doesn't mean that the deer who made them is as well. It could have moved on to somewhere else since these were made."
Russ turned his attention to the fresher set. "These on the other hand, we might have a better chance of finding deer. They could still be in the area, or they could not. But even if they're a day old they're still good to follow." He looked at Ryu. "You know how to tell if there was more than one that went this way?"

"Ah.... how do you tell?" He asked, head tilting to the side. He wasn't to good with the whole hunting thing yet. He looked up at Russ, impressed that he knew all these things. Unless he was asking that question because he actually didn't know and was hopping Lilac did. Either way, this was fun! He had a new friend to spend time with.
This made him hop, grinning stupidly. "I have no idea!" He admitted, nudging his cheek.

"The tracks again. How close are they together, both sideways and longways?" Russ stood back a little to allow Ryu to study the tracks again if he wanted. Russ wasn't going to give him all the answers. This was a lesson after all.
There was always a lot to learn from tracks. If the tracks were uneven in spacing, that sometimes meant that there was more than one of the prey traveling this way. If one of the tracks was more depressed in the earth at constant intervals, then the deer had an injury and was nursing it.

He glanced about, looking up at him. "Ahm...." Poking at the foot-prints he looked up. "Really close." He squeaked, glancing to the side and at the tracks again.
"....Two deer?" He asked, looking up. "Deers? Deer? What is the word for more than one?" He flicked his tail side to side, noting the tracks once more, tail flicking more. Yes, he was certain there were two deer. His eyes started to seek approval from Russ.

Russ shrugged. "Grammer and all that jazz was never my strong suit." He smiled at Ryu. "Good. So we know that more than one have come this way recently. Which might also mean that this could be common path for them, for if we want to lie in wait for them one day."
Russ pointed his paw in the direction the tracks were leading. "We'll follow these for a bit, but if we get closer, meaning the tracks are really fresh, we'll need to see if we're upwind or downwind of them." A glint appeared in Russ's eyes. "Cause it won't do for our meal to smell us coming and run, even if it is fun to chase after them."

Lilac smirked at the male, nodding. "Right." This seemed easy so far. That is, until they reached the deer, then it'd probably be harder. Still, he'd show off and get him deer! Maybe two! How hard could it be to get deer?
"Don't they have horns?" He asked, making a move to start sniffing around for deer. His tail flicked side to side, lightly bumping Russ, testing the waters.

"The adult males do." He grinned at Ryu. "So depending on how adventurous you feel, we could try to take one of them down. Or we could go for a female or a little one." But even then they'd have to be careful. Deer tended to try to kick anything chasing them or latching onto a leg, and a well placed hoof could seriously hurt.
He glanced sideways at Ryu as he felt the other's tail touching his occasionally. Was Ryu doing it on purpose, or accidentally in his focus on finding deer. Russ had no issue with another's tail touching him, despite it being an intimate gesture for some, possibly. But if Ryu was doing it unintentionally...Russ slowed his pace some to allow Ryu to take the lead, as well as stayed out of range of the other's tail, just in case.

Blushing in his stupidity his ears lowered. Of course Russ moved away, he was being creepy. His heart sinking slightly he just silently walked forward, sulking. He barely noticed when deer could be spotted, almost being spotted. However, he finally looked up and spotted the deer, moving behind a tree.
"Pshhhh." He whispered to Russ, crouching. "Can they hear us? What do we do?"

Russ crouched next to Ryu. He leaned in close so that he wouldn't have to whisper as loud. Because yes, there were different levels of whispering. "If we're very quiet they shouldn't be able to." Russ studied their prey. A doe and a stag, but the stag couldn't be very old. It didn't have a lot of points on his antlers. "First we see if we're in a good position." Russ lifted his head slightly, slowly to not attract attention, and sniffed the air for position of the wind and smells. With a nod of satisfation, Russ looked at Ryu. "Here will be fine. They won't be able to smell us here."
He pointed a paw at the two deer. "All right. For your first kill which do you want? Once you figure that out, I'll move to where they can smell me and chase them your way." That way Ryu can have his first kill.

He nodded at this, looking over at the two. He picked the bigger on instantly. "That one." He pointed at the bigger one, nodding firmly. He was not going to back down or lose, he'd show everyone. To hell with everyone! Yea, he was small and silly and named Lilac, but he could take down a damn deer!
"Ready?"

Russ studied Ryu but didn't say anything. He finally shrugged. "Alrighty then." If Ryu wanted to go after the big one, they'll go after the big one. Russ then looked at the area around them before leaning in close to Ryu. "Not now. Let me move over there," he pointed to a space on the other side of the clearing, "and then we'll go. That way the deer only have, hopefully, two other ways to flee."
Russ looked at Ryu. "And this way with you attacking on this side, and me attacking on the other, we have a better chance of getting your prize."

Lilac nodded at Russ, determined as always. Stretching and cracking his limbs, he moved to a more hidden spot. "Well then, go over there." He said softly, hoping to not sound rude. He just wanted to prove himself, and soon. He wanted to show Russ how manly he was, that was all.
While he waited he eyed the deer, his stomach knotting. Maybe....maybe this was a bad idea. Maybe he shouldn't have picked the huge one with antlers. Ah.... maybe he'd be flattened!

Russ chuckled to himself as he moved slowly and quietly towards the spot he had indicated. "Pushy, pushy Ryu." Obviously the purple fox was anxious to get his first kill. Hopefully that wouldn't get them killed. Russ really did not want to die. Not without finding someone just right for him. And there was just too much to do in life to die now.
Russ hunkered down once he reached his spot, surveying the best route to go, and other routes just in case. He peered across to where he knew Ryu was hiding, but the other male wasn't visible. Russ grinned. So far so good. With that, Russ lept out of his hiding spot and dashed towards the deer.
