"Yes, but that doesn't mean students shouldn't be trying." The ghoul sighed, moving the cards in her hand around. She paused momentarily as Lattice took her turn, a little confused by how fast she had formed her first Yaku. Hm.
"As far as respect goes, I'm not convinced that anyone is worthy of it." Not the yuppies around here, at least. "Everyone seems rather convinced that I'll just hand it to them if they look at me with puppy eyes long enough." Picking out another card and setting it atop the one that matched. "Is that it?" Was she getting this? She thought she was, but she wasn't sure..

Lattice went over her cards thoughtfully as she thought about what Riyo had said before she nodded slightly, "You are right again." She quietly shifted the cards around before she laid down a few matches before ending her turn. Normally a phrase was uttered during each turn but this was just a casual game and they were talking of better things.
"No one should 'expect' you to just hand out respect like it was candy." she replied softly as she nodded a little, "Yes, you are doing wonderfully, Riyo."
She quietly shifted her cards once more, "I would never come to you with my hand out expecting you to give me things, if anything it'd be for friendship." Unlike with everyone else she didn't presume friendship with this ghoul.

Glancing from the paper with lists of Yaku's to the cards in the center, Riyo lifted and placed one of the cards from her hand to form her own yaku. Hah, yeah. She was getting the hang of this.
Glancing over her small hand of paper, she raised a brow at Lattice's subtlety when it came to mentioning friendship. There was no denying that this ghoul was clever.. But it would take much more than that. "Sorry, I have none of that to give." The feline immediately responded with narrowed eyes. "It's an idea that gets tossed to me a lot, especially now that I have to roam campus and be exposed to happy-go-lucky thumb suckers that just left their parents for the first time." Obviously it wasn't the case of everyone around, since some lacked parents. "So tell me, what makes you seek out the companionship of others? Or rather, what makes you accept it when it's offered to you?"

Lattice arranged her hand before she started laying down various cards and claiming another yaku for her own.
She tilted her head, "It is fine if you do not respect me, I respect you a great deal," Lattice said simply not really minding if Riyo hated her or wanted to disrespect her. There are worse things in life than not having things reciprocated back. She tilted her head a bit as she chuckled, "I have always been around others mostly just my Sister. I come from a Clan where we deal with others each day and we must be kind to them if we are to get their business for their tattoos. I have no real reason of my own to seek companions otherwise. I just want to."
Being rude did not earn money.
"It is sad to hear that you have no friendship to give, but that is alright." Lattice replied quite bluntly to the ghoul.

How could this ghoul respect Riyo? Why, they'd just met! The idea seemed to perplex the feline, but she spoke nothing of it.
Ah. So she had a sister. It seemed like the people with siblings were always more willing to accept others.. At least from her experience. And business. Well, Riyo could certainly relate to that.
"Yes, business demands that you turn the other cheek to customers. I can understand that... But that doesn't mean you have to continue such an attitude into your personal life." Was Riyo alone in this? She had met other bitter business owners when she was younger, so that couldn't be the case... Maybe Lattice was just a saint.
Glancing up from her cards at the ghoul's last comment, Riyo tried to poker face her way through how it made her feel. Just... Alright? Most students gave her this sad face akin to seeing an abandoned minipet on the street... But this one just shrugged it off. As if she didn't really care if the feline had something to give or not. Oh, she knew she should've felt grateful... But she didn't.
It made her realize how good it felt to know that people wanted to be her friend... No, even simpler than that... To know that she was wanted in any capacity.
There was a slight falter in her eyes, but only a momentary one. The feline's tail twitched slightly, then relaxed and laid on the bench next to her.
"Hm." Setting the cards face down on the table, Riyo paused. "You're very clever. Though, I'm sure you already knew that."

She shifted her cards around a bit more, "Just because I respect others and maybe even give them a chance to prove whether or not they are trustworthy does not mean I am the doormat which they can walk on." Lattice pointed out quietly. Certainly she might be naive to the world outside of the Manor she came from but she also was practical and tried to be careful of potential betrayal of others outside of her Sister and herself. "I don't know I just find it easier to be ... respected if I treat others how I wish to be treated or at least try to."
It seemed to be commonsense.
When Riyo set her cards down Lattice seemed to follow suit watching as the other ghoul's shape moved to lie down on the bench. The Engraver's head canted toward the side at her words, "How so? I simply say what comes to mind."

Ah, yes. The golden rule. Treat others the way you want to be treated. It... Was something that had never been applied in her situation. And thus, Riyo didn't really follow it either. She treated others in a way that might get them to leave her alone... Because for the longest time, it had been better than offering them any semblance of kindness.
"I have met many liars who look me in the eye and assume I don't know that they think they're clever. They're not. Those grins only seal their proverbial graves. But you. You make me think. Your words make me feel things, and that hasn't happened in a long time. Whether you realize it or not, you're clever. It takes a lot to make me do something I don't want to... Like feel."
Shrugging, she folded her hands together in front of her. "Or perhaps I'm blowing this out of proportion. I suppose I do that a lot." And then, without provocation, the demoness stood.
"How about we finish this game another time?"

She didn't grin nor did she smile a small shrug shifted her shoulders, "I see, everyone around me seems to take feelings for granted, Riyo. By nature I must set myself back and feel nothing if I want to or not but while here...I let that lapse and it feels...Relaxing to finally allow myself to feel things whether I want to or not."
When Riyo stood and started to gather the cards, "I must remember to be more reserved perhaps. It might affect my work in my art."
Lattice gave a small nod, "Yes, another time. I believe we both need to do some thinking now."

... Relaxing, huh?
Riyo didn't have time to relax. She didn't have time for anything besides work. And that was 50% of her problem right there.
"Yes. Thinking. I agree." The feline replied quietly, a small nod following as if nothing more could be said on the subject.
Turning around, the ghoul started to return from whence she came, but paused.
Her head turned slightly, and she tipped her hat at the ghoul. "Good day, Lattice."

Lattice had been in the process of gathering up her things when she paused and looked up at Riyo there was a small smile upon her lips, "Yes you have a good day as well, Riyo."
With that the ghoul resumed gathering her things and then left on her own.
