Sofiel smiled, positive that the young colt was close to something.... an improvement from mere moments earlier! In that moment Sofiel could see Demon going far, doing something no other of his kind had ever done.... he just didn't know what that something was. He would have to keep tabs on the boy as he grew, perhaps he would one day be worthy of calling himself a warrior, or a warlord, whatever his kind named themselves.

"Pride can often get in the way." He commented, in that moment not classing them as seperate species, if anything they were more alike than he was to other fluttercorns, for they both had a fighting spirit a strong heart that needs a delicate touch and the right key to open it... he hoped that even though the boy was a kalona that he would find someone who would do that for him, and that that someone didn't destroy it and him in the process.

Taking a deep breath he watched as Demon wobbled, the exhaustion was clear, the run wearing him out, the injuries upon him draining him. Still, he did not feel sorry for the creature, for that would be an insult.

After a little while he spoke again, "You are exhausted. You need to rest. Would you trust me to guard you while you rested?" Sofiel was curious, though he believed he knew the answer... no.

Demon growled, "Trust.... is for those who have a weakness. Who are not strong enough to rely on themselves." He was weak, but he couldn't accept that.... he was a Kalona, the true dark breed, born to live a life of solitude, of blood and destruction.... an image of Lana'thel and her court, evil laughter, pain, rage, blood.... he closed his eyes.

"No..... Never. Again." He spat. He would never be made a fool of again! NEVER! "You are toying with me!" He said softly, looking up at the brown stallion once more, "...am that much of a fool?" His words were a mere whisper.

Sofiel let the boy blow off some steam, the wounds would go deep, and even when those cut within his flesh had healed those within would take a long time to heal.... much longer than a single night. "I am not.... and no, I do not see you as a fool."

"Rest," He said, smiling at him for a moment. "I promise on my honour, on the mate I hold dearest and cherish above all others... that I won't let any harm befall you this eve." Honour was something Sofiel held dear, something he cherished like a coat of armour. It was his shield, his code... and the very reason he had left his clan.

Deciding to attempt to distract the colt, to talk of other things he thought of a story, "There once was a warrior king..."

Despite everything Demon had been through, he found a small niave part of himself, the part he had guarded and protected throughout the whole of his torture... it wanted to trust, wanted to find someone who wouldn't try and destroy him body and soul for their own gain. Everybody wanted something.

His mother wanted a legacy. His father wanted worthy carriers of his genes. Lana'thel had wanted a slave and guard. What did this stallion want?

It was true though, Demon was tired. His small body had been pounded to the brink of utter destruction and he was struggling to keep going. He needed to heal. He needed a good meal. He need to forget. All things that right now seemed an impossibility.... he would lucky if he managed to stay the night out of the grip of Lana'thel and her 'guards'. Demon didn't want to go back there. Didn't want that life. He still had his dream to become the best and strongest Kalona of all time to fulfil.... and this torture only made his mind more set on that goal. He NEVER wanted to be weak again, never wanted to lose, to be used....

His eyes nearly closed, it was only by his sheer will that he managed to open them. He remained silent though, not wanting to waste more energy than he had to.

Stay awake. Stay awake. He repeated those two little words over and over again in his mind. Maybe if he said it enough it would actually happen.

Sofiel could see the hesitation in the colts eyes, but didn't comment on it. He had a feeling that having any weakness pointed out would likely only make matters worst... and boy, this colt had already withstood a hell of a lot of punishment... and Sofiel really didn't want to make it worst.

And that was why Sofiel simply continued with his story; "...he believed he could do anything. Beat anyone. But he wasn't very good at waiting." So true of most! Sofiel thought as he continued, "The warrior king wanted everything then and now, it was a weakness that his rival knew of. And so a plan was put into action. The rival, butterfly, knew that she couldn't match the warrior king on strength and brute force... but there was something she could do far better. Wait. Butterfly had all the patience in the world, and intelligence to boot."

Sofiel took a moment to pause, noticing the colts eyes closing once again before popping back open. He was close to sleep... of that Sofiel was sure. "The warrior king wanted butterfly's land, wanted to make her his mate since she was the most beautiful creature in all the world." In many cultures butterflys were symbols of hope, beauty and freedom... to steal one against its will was a crime against nature. "Butterfly knew of this plans, had listened to all the whispered conversations the wind had carried to her... and so she sent all of her people away, not willing to risk that they would injuried. It didn't take long for the warrior king to invade, butterfly hid. and every time the warrior king came close to finding her she moved...."

Demon listened to the words of the story... why was the flutter telling him it? Like he cared about some warrior king and a silly butterfly! That didn't help with real life!

Still, he couldn't stop or delay the yawn that escaped him. Or the wash of tiredness that followed. His eyes started to close, the world went hazy and all Demon was left with... was an unweilding desire to run.

It didn't take long until he was under the spell of sleep, unable to fight it anymore.

Sofiel had noticed the change in the colts breathing, but continued his story for a little while longer just in case he woke up with a jolt again, Sofiel didn't want to give him anything else to fear and fully intended to do as he had promised.

"...for several Moons butterfly managed to evade the warrior king, and with each day and night that passed without her capture the warrior kings thoughts grew dealier and deadlier. He wanted more than anything now to make the butterfly play, to teach her a lesson for trying to escape him." He watched the colt, his body had relaxed now. A good sign. "When the butterfly finally revealed herself to the warrior king he was in such a rage that he couldn't see the situation for what it was... a trap."

It was a lesson Sofiel had learnt as a youth, emotions, especially the extremes of each, made you make mistakes, blurred your vision from what was actually happening.... focus, coldness, determination... they were the only things you could rely on.

Eventhough the colt was asleep Sofiel found himself saying aloud; "A true leader sees the whole board, and knows what someone could plan to do before they even contemplate it. Keep your emotions out of it." He frowned, stopping himself from saying more.

Instead Sofiel distracted himself by looking at the land around them, it wasn't the best place to 'hide' but it wasn't the worst either, if they got lucky no one would come near them..... the Gods knew that the poor colt needed some time to heal a little.

Demon fell into a tormented sleep. In his mind he replayed it all... was the same defensless and low creature that had landed him in a position to get tortured in the first place... nothing had changed. Nothing would ever change.

-----------------------------

LATER.....

-----------------------------

Demon woke with a start. Sweat dripped from his brow as he barked out; "You will never break me Lana'thel!" It wasn't until his eyes focused that he recieved any clarity... the same dream again. His eyes scanned the area, his head ached and it took him a moment to remember what had happened... or rather was happening. His head was stuck in a tree, and a fluttercorn was watching him. As if summoned by his thoughts the flutter came into view, it seemed he had been circling.... Demon froze. Not at all comfortable with the idea of being examined like a piece of meat.

And as always, when uncomfortable Demon lashed out; "Get a good look pervert?" He growled at him, snapping his teeth. He should never have trusted him! His fear was right... he had been one of Lana'thel's pawns! It didn't explain why he had let Demon sleep.... or maybe it did... let him get some of his strength back to make what was sure to follow all the more painful for Demon. At least in the world of constant pain and agony Demon had become almost numb to the daily lashings he recieved... but now? It would be like virgin skin being ripped into again and again. Unable to stop it he shivered, with every cell of his body he wished there was an alternative..... anything but that hell!

After Sofiel had been sure the colt had been fast asleep he had circled the area... checking for both danger and a way to free to young boy. It seemed that Demon wasn't as stuck as he thought he was, he simply didn't have the patience to think the situation through... not surprising given the situation.

Demon's breathing changed, not wanting to alarm the colt as he woke up Sofiel started to move back to where he could be seen... only to be greeted... so the colt was already awake and not simply rambling in his sleep. Sofiel didn't comment on the question simply stood before him, eyes cold and emotionless as he spoke. "If you want to be free... imagine I am your mirror image." He then tilted his head to the side, at the right angle for Demon to get his horns and head back through the gap. "Then slowly move backwards."

Not wanting to cause more distress to the young colt, and he wasn't foolish enough to believe that a kalona would turned on him, even if he had 'helped'. That is why he turned and walked away before the colt had even started to get himself free. At a safe distance he shrunk and fluttered up into a tree. He would watch.... but that was all Sofiel would do now.

He knew full well that some things had to be done one your own.

Demon growled at the fluttercorn, not wanting to take his advice... not wanting to have to rely on anyone or anything! Who did that guy think he was? He bared his teeth just as the other stallion walked away. "That's right... flee..." He growled after him, frustrated at his own lack of strength in that moment.

It took him a while of fuming to actually do anything. Left with no other option though Demon knew he had little choice but to 'try' what the fluttercorn and said.... he only hoped he wouldn't get jammed worst! If he did he was so hunting down that sorry excuse for a creature and making him pay!

Tilting his head, Demon took an unsteady breath before finally taking a very step back. He felt his cheek scrap on the surface so tilted a little back in the hopes of compensating. Again he was cautious as he took his next step. It seemed easier than the first... and before too long he was free.

He stretched his neck, relief washed over him at finally being free again.... but with that came a frown. Why had the other helped him? His eyes wandered into the direction the fluttercorn had gone as he pondered his question. He guessed he would never know. But Demon had the distinct impression all of a sudden that if the fluttercorn had wanted him dead then Demon would have been... which lead him to wonder what the others secret was. His body had seemed as scarred and bloody as his own.... to survive all those battles.... to walk away the victor.... did that not mean the fluttercorn had been far stronger than Demon had ever given him credit for?

He frowned. His mother had always lead him to believe only Kalona's had strength... yet.... his frown deepened. Even Lana'thel had spoke of the strength of a kalona.... suddenly everything he had ever been told sounded like a lie.

Demon forced his thoughts to the back of his mind as he got moving again. It was dangerous to stay still... he had lingered too long already. Deciding to do the fluttercorn a favour he started to run in the opposite direction.
