Lady Argentum Draconis

Enduring Hunter

Arthur took a step or to back she turned to face him, her entire body radiating irritation. "Uh...umm..." he stammered. "I just thought that...maybe you..." he watched her beautiful blue eyes narrow. Wait? Beautiful? he thought to himself. Where did that come from? And why can't I put a sentence together? This is Aalun! Just Aalun. When did you start tripping over yourself like she's a Mare? He shook his head, and looked back at her. "Its not really safe around here." he said. "There are Skinwalkers and Kalona around." he said.

Aalun raised one eyebrow. "So? You act like I don't know how to take care of myself." she said. "Let me put this in words you can understand," she swayed a bit closer getting into his face. "I'm not a little filly anymore. I'm a big mare and I can take care of myself, all by myself." she looked him in the eye and then pulled back. "Got it?" she finished keeping her voice hard.

Inside she wanted to cry. He really was trying. Even that lame excuse, she could see was a plea to keep her around. At least she hoped so. They'd be hell to pay if he was just jerking her around.

Arthur swallowed and nodded. "Of course you are." he said resisting the urge to take a step back. He'd faced scarier...least he thought he had. "I..." he gave up. There really was no reasoning with her. There never really had been. He'd just accepted that she always got what she wanted, one way or another.

"At least let me walk with you? Just for awhile. Catch up on old times?" he asked hesitantly. He didn't know why, but now that he'd seen her and he was at least partially sure she wasn't about to kill him, he didn't want to let her go yet. Only Heaven knew if he'd ever run into her again. "Please?"

Aalun snorted. "We don't have any old times Arthur." she said turning and starting to walk off towards the edge of the forest. She kept her head up and her eyes on the sunlight coming from a break in the trees. It was the only way she could keep the tears from coming. She swallowed hard and kept trying to tell herself she didn't care, she didn't care what he wanted or did, or that she'd never been so happy to see him. I love you, I love you, I love you! The words kept echoing over and over in her mind, until she forcefully shut them out.

Arthur stood there as he watched her weave in and out of the trees heading for open air. If he hadn't been used to watching her move he was sure he would have lost sight of her. She was like a dancer when she moved, and slipped easily from shadow to shadow. It was amazing to watch, and made the hard as steel mare seem soft and mysterious. Of course the rational part of his brain perked up and said it was just the Kirin in her blood.

He sighed and tried to figure out what to do. She hadn't exactly told him no, but neither has she said yes. That was the problem with Aalun, when she decided to stop making sense, and start acting like a Mare.

With a frustrated sigh he trotted after her and managed to come along side her just as the came out on to the plains. "So...how's your family?" he asked hoping he sounded casual.

"They're fine." she answered keeping her eyes forward. "And so's yours, last I saw them anyway. Which I'm sure you were dying to know." she added and noticed he at least had the decency to wince at mention of his family.

"And I'm fine, and I'm sure you are too. I don't really feel like swapping pleasantries. Its so unbecoming of us Arthur. We don't do the talking thing well, you know that. We're the ones who go in when the talking is over." she glanced over, "So why are you trying diplomacy with me?"

Arthur coughed glanced away from her. "Because I'm still fairly certain you can beat me in a fight." he said. He had to look quickly back though as an unfamiliar sound accosted his ears. She was actually laughing at him. That was a good thing...maybe, in his experiences people were less likely to kill you if you made them laugh.

"What? It's true. You always were the best." he smiled a bit, hoping that maybe just maybe he could win her over.

Aalun snorted as she finished laughing. "Maybe." she said somewhat coyly. She was pathetic, she was pretty sure of it, but no matter what she couldn't really manage to stay mad at him for long periods of time.

She shook her head. "Oh, Arthur. You never change do you?" she said a hint of affection in her voice.

"Not really." he admitted, taking a deep breath and looking around. "Not always a bad thing though." he said. "Something has to stay constant in a world that's constantly changing." he mused out loud.

He glanced over at Aalun and sighed. She hadn't changed...much...filled out a bit more, and finally grown into those knobby knee's she'd had as a youngster. Made him wonder...was there someone in her life? If he tried hard, and squinted a bit he could see she was an attractive mare in the prime of her life. No way she'd remained unattached, right? Right?

He felt like he was missing something important, but instead of considering, his big mouth opened and his hoof went in it. "So, anyone special in your life?"

Aalun stiffened, her ears flicking the only sign of her inner turmoil. Did he really ask her that? Could he be so stupid as to ask her that!?

"No." she finally managed to get out. It sounded cold and steely. "Although your brother did ask to take your place when you disappeared." she said. "I told him no."

She flicked her tail then continued on her way. Let him chew on that.

Arthur blinked. The gears in his brain slowly turning and putting the pieces together. "Wait!" he called out to her and trotted after her. "My brother!?" he hadn't seen his brother in years, and the details were fuzzy. "Why'd you tell him no? I mean...he's...kinda like me..."

He glanced sidelong at her prepared to jump if those horns or teeth came at him. He was missing something again, he knew it. It was probably going to cost him dearly at some point in the near future. Painfully...he was sure.

And she spun alright but not as he expected, there was no evil intent behind her horns. "Because He Wasn't You!" she snapped at him. She turned back and galloped off tears in her eyes. She couldn't believe she'd just said that. How could she be so stupid to say something like that to him. He didn't care, it was a miracle if he'd even understood.

When she thought she was a good distance away she stopped and stood letting the breeze ruffle her mane, her sides were heaving and she closed her eyes letting the tears flow.

He wasn't you! He wasn't you! The words echoed around Arthur's mind as he watched Aalun run off. He stopped and stood unmoving in shock. He wasn't you! He shook his head trying to clear it of those words, but they kept repeating, pounding against his very being. He'd...been a terrible fool, more so than usual obviously. That's what was wrong...what had always been a little wrong between them. She...,gods above help him, loved him...or wanted him or something. He was sketchy on the details, but it was still there. He maybe slow on the uptake at times, but that was a pretty hard fact for even him to ignore once slapped in the face with it.

And deep down, he had to admit, he...liked Aalun, and not just as a comrade in arms, but...as a mare. He looked up trying to catch sight of her. "Aalun?" he called out his voice sounding hoarse to his ears. "Aalun." he felt himself start to move and suddenly running to find the mare. "Aalun!"

Aalun blocked out the world focusing on the turmoil that was inside her. She'd made a fool of herself, something she wasn't used to being. She'd always been on top of the game, always saying just the right things, always being on top in a fight, she wasn't used to being brought down a peg. Especially by Arthur. She wasn't sure if she wanted to cry again or laugh at the absurdity of it all.

Her ear flicked just slightly as she heard someone call her name. Logically she knew it had to be Arthur, no one else knew who she was, but absently she wondered if it could be anyone else. Maybe just maybe one of her clan had come looking for her? Idle hope...in fact very idle hope, but it had to be better than having to look at Arthur again.

Arthur, out of breath trotted the rest of the way up the hill next to Aalun. She'd run a fair distance and he'd nearly lost her trail a couple times. He stood a few steps back catching his breath, watching her do...what he wasn't sure, but he knew better than to interrupt her.

He absently looked down and scratched a hoof in the dirt trying to decide what to say to her. Everything he could come up with sounded weak. She wouldn't respect him for that...There had to be something he could say that would...well it wouldn't make things better, but fix things just enough to redeem himself if it was even possible. He just didn't want to loose her again.
