Saoiraed had gone back down into the oasis, this time a little further from his last hole. It was probably better to dig somewhere else right? If there was more of that funny stone with the bad drawings on it he didn't wanna dig it up. He was hoping to find something different! And he'd better get working...it seemed like there were more than just lions digging! He even saw a meerkat...that no one had snapped it up as a quick snack was surprising. Maybe it belonged to someone...His thoughts were derailed as he saw something under a skim of sand. What was that?! A skull leered back at him from the ground. A skeleton...of a lion! He scampered away from it, uneasy. How had it died here? Had it drowned in the oasis maybe...?

Meeper squeeked in laughter. Seemed he was far less important to the mouse. That was ok too. If he had any sense he wouldn't hang around with predatures hanging around. Still he was proud of his digging skills. The little meerkat went to work. Globs of dirt and mud flying out behind him. An insect popped into view and he grabbed it quickly. After munching it he went back to work.

It didn't take Niwaa long to find a new place to dig. With her little legs though, it did take her a while to get there though. She had to dodge and hide the larger animals nearly constantly. If the bulk of them hadn't been so distracted she never would have made it over to the other patch of grass.

Here, amongst it's roots, she began to dig again... here she found a strange object. It was cool to the touch, but smelt of blood, like a predator. The blood was old though, and didn't threaten her much. This object was curved in a strange sort of way and she found it rather easy to dig around it and keep going past.

It wasn't that Tanuri was dying for amusement or anything--he wasn't really bored...he was just...interested in social gatherings. Sure, that was it.

Besides, it was hot and there was nothing else to do besides wonder about the dwindling water supply. Why not dig up some old garbage?

Ever since joining the Firekin, the young male hadn't really made what one would call "best friends". In fact, he'd be eager to let someone know that he didn't really like company--that company actually made him more grumpy than he already was. Still, he didn't let that stop him from following the crowds. For whatever reason, though he'd never admit it, he sort of...enjoy--err, was intrigued by his fellow...pride members. That was it.

So there he was, among them in the dried oasis, eagerly (maybe too eagerly) digging for buried "treasure", if one could call it that. And right as that thought passed through the male's mind, arm scooping deep into the ground, his paw was nicked by something that drew blood. Pulling back with a wince (but far too proud to cry out), the male dug around the object until he could safely pull it out with his teeth. Placing it on the ground in the open, Tanuri saw that it was a sharp object of some kind. How strange...

Gods, it really hurt.

This strange object almost seemed to be a stroke of good luck. The entrance to her temporary home was now quite hard. It would be difficult (maybe even impossible!) for any larger predators to break through and reach her inside while she slept. Maybe, until the rains returned and drowned her out, she would make this small home her permanent residence. It would certainly serve her well.

Niwaa was getting deeper now, and had to make frequent trips back to better push the dirt to the surface. The hard object was causing her some trouble here, it kept catching extra dirt on it's sides. This could be remedied with a bit of extra patience though. Just so long as she didn't come across a pebble too big to push past it.

She returned to digging and barely three scratches in she found it. Smooth and hard, an old skull with feathers stuck through it's eyes. It would be too big too pull back out through the small and restrictive hole. She would have to leave it there. What odd luck she was having today. Turning away from the object, she began to work on digging out the other side of the chamber.

Even though her first find had been a bit of a let down, Momo was eager to try again (or perhaps more eager to keep her mind off of her thirst). Furrowing her brows, the lioness walked a few paces from her most recent find and selected a different spot to dig in.

She took care not to step on any of the small creatures that had taken up the pass-time as she went.

The place she chose was particularly dry, which only reminded the female of how similar her throat was to the dirt. Swallowing nothing, Momo shook her head fiercely with a faint growl and began to dig once more. Paws shoveling great heaps of dust and sand, the tips of her toes finally felt something.

Hastily pawing at the object until it broke through the surface of the sand, Momo's blinked her eyes in surprise--it was a beautiful, glittering stone. Wow...

...Perhaps she would just...hold onto it for a while...

Meeper had to scamper quickly out of the way of a couple larger animals. How rude! He chittered to show his displeasure. Well he hadn't wanted to keep digging there anyhow. He darted away and headed toward a tree stump the water had left as it had rececced. Agilily he scooted up onto his perch. Such a lovely view from up here. Quickly he checked above him for arial predators.

The other side of her small hole in the ground was a bit softer, though not by much. At least now, she figured, she was out of the burning heat that plagued the other diggers outside. Just so long as none of them came over to collapse this new home as well she would be just fine. And maybe, during the night, she would leave her home to take advantage of the hard work of the larger animals and take from their new found water.

After all, even despite the shade this was hard and thirsty work... She cursed and slammed a rear paw to the ground. Another skull! This one wrapped in old and rotting leather! What mad creature had gone and decorated these strange skulls only to bury them and forget about it? It was becoming rather difficult to dig with all these strange objects buried about.

The aged pig paused in his work to roll onto his back and thoroughly coat himself in mud. Grunting in pleasure, he righted himself once again and waded further in from shore to scavenge the muck further. When his tusk scraped against something hard he hunkered down and pulled at the object, but it turned out to only be a rock. He considered moving close to shore, but there were smaller animals there already. He didn’t think the mouse for instance would be able to come work in this deeper, wetter slush, and he wanted to take advantage of that.

Something had lit up within Tanuri as he participated in the pridal pass-time. Perhaps spurred on by the irritation of having been cut by some random, sharp, bloody-smelling object of stupidity that had dared cut his paw (godsithurtsobad), the lion was quickly darting to one spot after another, digging away into the ground.

Blue eyes hardened, he looked positively determined to find another object, as though driven by revenge--as though somehow finding another object would mean he had bested the dried oasis bed, and the object that had nicked him.

The sand stung in his cut at first, but his wound was small and the pain quickly faded (perhaps it had been entirely clogged with sand). Grumbling random curses to himself, Tanuri chose another spot and began to dig intensely.

Paws striking a solid object, the lion pulled up his prize with greedy enthusiasm and placed it before himself. It was--it was...

What was it..?

Blinking uncomfortably, the male curled his lip and folded his ears. It was creepy...dark rune of some kind...whatever it was, Tanuri didn't want to dwell in its presence for long and promptly abandoned it for a different spot.

Sighing, she turned to work on the back of the cave. Surely luck would not frown upon her three times in a row! So long as she could just dig out an area large enough for her to sleep in it would be worth it... otherwise, she'd have to dig down or find yet another spot to dig her burrow. Such a shame too. This one would have provided quite the nice little spot for her daytime naps.

She took a few moments to push more dirt outside. So far, so good.

No good. Another object. She pressed against it. Cold, hard, and oddly straight. She could dig under it without going too far down so she opted to take that route rather then finding a whole new place to dig. Perhaps it the stone was large enough it would provide some protection from the mad digging lions. The stone roof had strange markings on it, and she paused a while to clear the dirt out of them. Odd, but pretty enough.

The thrill of treasure hunting seemed to be contagious, as Momo took note of the new-found enthusiasm found within a red male lion. She didn't know him, but he certainly seemed borderline obsessed in his task. Momo decided to follow his lead and added a burst of energy to her own hunting.

Hunting was what she did best, after all.

Gold eyes set on the sand, the huntress pawed at several spots before choosing a digging place. Once she had decided on one, she used her great paws as shovels yet again. Every now and again she found herself glancing over at the red male lion, wondering why he was so engulfed in finding trinkets.

But amidst her thoughts, the lioness's paws hit something. Grabbing at the object, the lioness pulled it up out of the dirt. It was...another beautiful stone! How lucky was she?! Losing her tough mask for a moment, the lioness grinned and placed her new stone next to her other one.

She continued clearing out the stone markings for a while. The little mouse was getting tired and this made for a good break from hauling dirt around. When she did get back to digging she focused on the back of the tunnel, hoping to find the boarders of this stone. The trick would be to leave enough dirt there to hold it up, while exposing enough to create a comfortable chamber.

Midway through, the top of a hard object buried in the floor caught her attention. Clicking her teeth in annoyance she began to dig it out. Finally! The gods seemed to be smiling upon her! This object was rather large but with just a bit of chewing at the leather which held the pieces together she was able to separate it into small enough chunks to drag up and out of her burrow.

There was a displaced lump in the mud up ahead. Something large that swelled the surface. The warthog struggled in the mud out to it since there was no graceful way to cross a half-dried riverbed, and prodded the lump with a tusk. It was something soft, smooth… The warthog grimaced in disgust and turned hurriedly away from the buried hippo corpse. He wasn’t by any degree a sentimental sort, but he had no desire to uncover the remains.

Meeper felt safe from above attacks. He murmured to himself. Drink, he'd come down here for a drink. The little meerkat hopped down from his post. He scampered happily over to a small puddle and began to lap eagerly. The rains couldn't come too soon for him. It was fun to watch the drops hit the ground.
