"'Involved without joining'," Ian repeated slowly, making a contemplative face as he puzzled through what the stranger meant. After a pause bordering on awkwardly long, he laughed once and asked, "So it's like people can just sign up for superpowers?"
If you had asked him two years ago if he would want to sign up to get superpowers, Ian likely would have said yes without hesitation. But that had changed now. The idea was still completely awesome to him in principle, but ... there was an obvious need for them now. And obvious danger, as well. And it was also not like there was just a single supervillain running around, either - it was a full-blown war, it sounded like.
On the other hand, there was already plenty of collateral damage. Like the whole ordeal where a section of the city had fallen comatose.
Ian's brows drew together, and he nodded, looking concerned. This masked boy could easily be lying, but he took in the information anyway, to keep it in mind. This was good, knowing more things. The more he knew, the more easily he would be able to determine truth. It was the same with everything, really.
But one thing for sure was that his groceries were getting heavy. Could he just tell the stranger to let him alone, so he could go home?
"Food for thought," Ian said at length, nodding slowly. "Thank you, though," he added with a small smile. Awkward as it seemed. "I should be getting home, though. Get the cream cheese I just bought into the refrigerator and all that." The red-haired boy stopped on the street corner and tossed his head slightly, trying to dislodge a piece of hair that had gotten caught awkwardly but not painfully on the frames of his glasses. Then he turned back to the stranger in the long coat. "I'll do my best to stay out of the way."

"Appreciated" He said with a wry amusement. "If you ever... feel like joining though, do look me up... I think the world could use a few more...good men." He nodded almost ponderously. Sagely perhaps.
"Remember... none of the players are innocent in this, at least some of us admit that, others..." He shrugged and looked...sad perhaps.

"Oh, ah, alright," he replied. Ian started to turn to go, then stopped and looked back. "Oh, ah, what's your name?" the red-haired boy then inquired. On one hand, he was not fully sure about sharing his name with the mysterious stranger, but on the other, he was not one to be impolite. "My name's Ian." That seemed safe enough. With whatever magic and such the powered-up warriors had, name or not, Ian figured, name or not, he could only be so safe.

A brief pause before he answered with a small nod. "Zinkenite..." A pause before he added "...Good night Ian, I hope our next meeting is... just as civil."
And with that he stepped back into the shadows to watch the red-haired young man make his way the last of the way home.
