There is Traditional Wicca and Eclectic Wicca.

Traditional is Fertility based.

Eclectic is Nature based.

Traditional Wiccans also have a tendency to view Eclectic Wiccans as not true Wiccans, because Eclectic Wicca, while bound by some rules, is not bound by all the codes and conduct of Traditional Wicca.

Or so I've read somewhere. Not too sure from where. Could have things mixed up, though, since I'm drawing from memory.

It's more than that- see, Wicca is a Mystery Tradition, it's preserved by it's oaths and it's experiential. If something doesn't have these aspects- it's misrepresenting itself and because of the oaths- Wiccans often find themselves dispelling the misinformation that is spread around by eclectics who want to call themselves Wiccan.

The real questions are things like "Why do you want to be called Wiccan when it isn't what you practice? Or in some cases- is something that you really dislike?"

Dragoness Arleeana
lol, yes, a garter. I couldn't help but imaging a man in long wizard robes hiking up his robe to reveal his garter...

The Garter thing might be a part of the blood retardation stuff?

So like how Catholics view Protestants?

Ah.

So like how Catholics view Protestants?

Not really- because both Catholics and Protestants follow the Bible even if they don't agree on some things. It's more like say- you decided that you like the Bible and want to be a Catholic Priest, so you rent a building and call your church The Holy Roman Catholic Church and you're a Catholic Priest. This is really the best analogy because all of the Wiccans are Priests and Priestesses of Wicca who have been trained and initiated into the Priesthood like how all Catholic Priests are trained by the Catholic Church and then take their vows.
It's also different- because what makes Wicca itself and not something else isn't something someone can know is Wicca without initiation. Like- I'm a seeker, and the Wiccans I have spoken with on a regular basis have talked about what has me on my path. There's a chance that I might not be called to be Wiccan- though I feel like that chance is growing smaller and smaller every day. But if that's the case- if Wicca isn't what is calling me and seeking with the coven is just another step as I search, that's ok too. My HPS understands that is where I'm at- and she takes the time to talk to me about my path.

So, just like I don't claim I'm a Wiccan, a Catholic Priest or a Voudou Priest- because I haven't done what it takes to earn that title, other eclectics are in the same boat. And that's ok- if we're not there, then it doesn't make us bad people, unenlightened, spiritually flawed or anything- really, I think misrepresenting ourselves as Wiccan would do more harm than good now that I think about it.

Well, you're part right. There's traditional Wicca and then there is something that people call "Eclectic Wicca".

Traditional Wicca is Wicca. It is the fertility based witch-cult and mystery religion started by Gerald Gardner in the mid-20th century. It is an oathbound priesthood that one must be initiated into.

"Eclectic Wicca", while it is called "Wicca" is not actually Wicca. It did not split off from nor evolve out of Wicca, but rather took its name and applied it to other neo-pagan beliefs that have little to nothing to do with actual Wicca.

The reason why members of tradition Wicca don't view "eclectic Wicca" as real Wicca, is because its not. For it to be a tradition of Wicca it would have had to evolve from Gardner's religion and it did not. It came from the outside and took its name and a few outer-court practices. This does not make it the same religion. It makes is a different religion that assimilated a few superficial practices and beliefs and took its name.
