A piece of Dutch culture and for tourists an interesting detail: The Netherlands is well known for having a whole lot of the best music festivals worldwide! We're on that list several times with big events like Qlimax, Dance Vally, Dirty Dutch, Loveland, ID&T, Sensation, I love Techno (Belgium), Solar, Gay-Parade, Decibel, Mysteryland and so on and so on. That list contains only the must-see festivals worldwide and the Dutch contribution is significant inbetween ridiculous events like Woodstock and Burning-Man!
And I must say.. not because I'm Dutch, but I tend to travel to a lot of those events not just in the Netherlands, but I've been all over Europe and beyond: The Dutch parties are the best. Despite the weather! The toilets are relatively kept clean, the lines for drinks are never long or completely absent, safety (!) seems to be a big issue abroad. I was at a giant event @ Ibiza and there was no first aider in the house to get my friend a plaster! I have never seen any fire distinguisers elsewhere and emergency exits seem to be a problem outside the Netherlands as well. As soon as the Germans took over the organisation for the Love Parade themselves, 13 people were pushed to death because they had no idea what they were doing.
The Liberal gouvernement does support a great deal in making it possible that people get a decent education in being part of those organisations. I've seen our Prime Minister partying among us at many of those festivals several years before he got the job as head of the country.
Anyway, to make a long story short: Forget childrens stuff like Sinterklaas, don't bother coming to our liberation events or memorials, but be sure to visit one of those festivals. Ofcourse Queensday is our number one of all times! It holds a nice second place right after Rio de Janeiro's Carnaval at the worlds biggest parties list. That is the Dutch culture I'm proud of. Dress up ridiculous and join in the fun!
