Ralae stopped the walk to think. There wasn't anything that she really hide from Wykla and not that others wouldn't find out. Walking again slowly, she addressed the worst of it first. "It was horrible. The first time. And the second time. Thread. It burns. It looks so harmless but we weren't sure if Zay's wings would ever grow back right. You seen the scars but inside sometimes it seizes me the fear. When Thread comes in this time, Zay and I have a little payback to do."
"As for the boy! His name is D'lin. We met at Trine when I was playing messenger. I had been trying to push back Zaybreth's first flight and unfortunatelt when it happened I was at the other weyr. I hadn't chosen here, there was no boy or dragon that appealed to us. But he was nice AND he is a bronze rider. We actually took him back in time on one of our trips. His dragon Plexith has an amazing pattern. Zaybreth painted him," Ralae paused to reach down and pick up a light blue shell. It was small and kinda pinkish inside. Holding it up, the light shone through it slightly.

She listened intently. Trying to absorb everything she could from the older and experienced rider. Not that she wanted Kameth to ever be scored, but there was a possibility. She wanted to be prepared. "Dragons are resilient." Clearly they had had a good healer there since the green's wing had healed well enough to fly. The young girl hoped time would ease the memories that plagued her friend. "I'll be right there beside you too!" It was the least she could do now that she was sure of being able to be there.
"It musta been nice to flit," she grinned at their flits fluttering around, "around all over the place." Her eyes widened with shock and surprise. A tiny laugh escaped her, "you shouldn't stop a green silly. Dragons are gonna rise." Wykla winked. She could tease her friend friend now, while Kameth was still young. The young girl wasn't sure how she was gonna handle flights yet when he matured. Though hopefully it wouldn't be after other weyr's greens.
"Shells a bronze? You were lucky." Wykla snorted. Well at least Ralae had had a good time. "She did? Could I see it?" She watched Ralae pick up a shell and remembered to look too. There didn't seem to be too much at her feet.

"Don't worry, I am getting much better. Most of us are, you know. As for Zaybreth, she is much more resilient than I. If only I could be as strong as her sometimes" Ralae looked over at the green who had now dozed off in the ocean waves. "When we get the chance, we can ask for the day and go to Trine. They have DOLPHINS there! I saw them from the sky. I bet you would love them."
"It would be nice to be a flit. No worries except your empty belly," Ralae laughed. She whistled and Cheer came down to her. The gold was very happy to see her girl happy and be with friends. "No, I couldn't stop her but I wanted it to stop. It was so scary the first time. One minute you are yourself and then BAM! You are your dragon. And yes, you can come over to our Weyr anytime to look at our stuff. Or add to Zay's pile. I don't think she would mind."

Wykla arched her brow in response to the first part. How bad had she been before. She was temped to have Kameth ask Zaybreth, but didn't. "Surely she wouldn't have picked you if you weren't resilient too Ral. I think you are strong like her." Wykla nodded, acting knowledgeable.
She looked skeptical. "Dolphins?" How could a shipfish compare to a dragon? Ah well, if her friend wanted her to. The young teen grinned, "Alright. When Kameth is old enough we can take a trip down." An elbow nudged the older girl playfully. "Maybe I'll get to meet this bronze rider of yours."
Wykla joined Ralae in the laugh. Ah the life of a flit. She grinned as the familiar gold showed up. "Hello Cheer. Have a nice chat with Boreal? Well I've never heard a rider being able to stop their dragon. It was only a matter of time." She looked toward Kameth. Clearly, being a blue, she wouldn't have the same experience as a greenrider. How much different will it really be?
Giving herself a shake, she threw off the thought. "That sounds good. I'll get an idea for more what she likes. That way I'll know if I find something good." Wykla had a good idea what the green liked, remember her long lost brush with a sheepish grin.

"Yeah, you're right. I am sure you are right. I tell you one thing, the past looks pretty much like the present does. You know, except for those nasty grubs and Thread. I guess that's a good thing, it means that Pern may stay the same for a while." Ralae picked up a stone and tossed it out to the ocean. Cheer chirped in interest, hoping it was food but then went back to cleaning her claws.
"Yes, dolphins! I heard they talk to you and can almost talk to dragons as well. Plus it is very warm in Trine though they get these wicked storms that come out of nowhere." Ralae grinned and threw her arm around Wykla. "Not mine. I probably will never see him again. Or only in passing. Riders don't get much time to go other places unless on a task. But he was very sweet. And now, I am more prepared for when the next time hits." She wrinkled her nose. "Maybe next time she won't be so loopy and stuff."
Cheer replied to Wykla then went off to search for crabs or snails. Some of her favorites.

"I would never have thought. The past seems so different... distant I guess." She smiled. "Grubs are nasty, and it's nice not to have to worry about thread." Wykla wondered how her friend would have handled Thread in their time. Would she have lost her mind? Perhaps not; dragonmen must fly/when Thread was in the sky. Or in this case.... dragonwoman. She giggled.
Dolphins were ok, but it was the storms that caught her and Kameth's attention. "Really? Bad storms with lots of wind?" The blue's head had come up and was watching the girls. I want to fly in storms Mine. I want to fly. The little blue raised his wings and started flapping. Wykla sighed. "You can't fly yet Kameth. And you already had your exercises for today. Soon as your big enough we'll get the Weyrling Master to let us up." She promised and hoped it would be enough for now.
"Ah that's too bad. Since your on messanger duty you might get to see him more." She offered hopefully. Wykla laughed. "Just trying to impress the other weyr boys?"

"The future seems that way as well. At first, being in the creche and then doing chores, I knew I would stand but I couldn't see myself Impressing until I did. And now it's been two Turns and I can still barely worry about anything except the next day. Maybe that's for best so I don't worry myself to death." Ralae laughed. Just then Wykla giggled and it felt good to laugh with a friend.
"Bad wind. Bad rain. I heard that sometimes they get," Ralae tried to remember the word. "Hurricanes? Storms so big they can go can cover an entire weyr and hold. They last for days and knock down trees and homes." She shivered and gave a shaky smile. "No thank you. I don't want to deal with that!"
Ralae was just so happy to feel normal again. It was so good to walk and see her dragon relaxed and happy. Turning to Wykla, she impulsively hugged the girl. "Thanks, I needed this so much. You, sunshine, being outside. We have to do this more often. If you want, I can show you the other scars. No one else has seen them but the healers and Weyrwoman."

Wykla grinned as her friend talked about Impression. "I don't think anyone really knows. Oh I'm sure there are those people who are so absolutely sure they will impress." So many had tried to determine what affected dragonic choice. There was still choices that surprised. She had certainly been surprised when the blue had called her out from among the group of girls. "Why should you worry Ral? You're with Zaybreth and she's with you. That's all a rider needs."
She tilted her head puzzling over the new word, while at the same time trying to keep her thoughts quiet from Kameth. It wouldn't do to get him excited again and start flapping sand everywhere. "Wow, that does sound big. I'm not sure how Kameth would fair in one of those." She worried that the blue might want to try if he found out about it.
The young teen was surprised and pleased when Ralae gave her a hug. She returned it enthusiastically. "You welcome! Absolutely, Ral. Whenever you want, you just pass the word to Kameth." Wykla looked at her friend solemnly, realizing the courage it took, and possibly the healing. "I would be honored. Maybe we can go over how to tend wounds like those too." It was always good to be prepaired.

Ralae shrugged and let go. It was nice to relax and not worry about what was going on with the rest of Pern or even Malvren. How long had they been walking now? It seemed like hours. Zaybreth was still sleeping but the water was a little higher on the dragon's body. "No one is allowed to fly during those in Trine. At last that is what I heard. I wouldn't want to either."
"Not now but later. Maybe we can catch a meal together? Have you received your own weyr yet or are you still in the barracks? Maybe we can room together or you can get a room close to mine." Ralae thought about this as she reached down to pick up a very light pink spiral shell. "So pretty. And delicate. Maybe I will just keep this one myself. I have enough for her pile now I believe."

"Hu maybe. I'm glad I'm not at Trine then. It would be impossible to keep Kameth grounded." She wouldn't want the dragon to strain something, or worse, just because he couldn't listen.
"Sure. I might have to feed Kameth first, but I can find you after that." Wykla made a face at the mention of her own weyr. "Barracks still. We wont get our own until Kameth is grown or almost there. I spotted a weyr I'd really like to have. Great view for storms. Hopefully no one takes it first." She sighed. The higher colored dragons would probably get first pick.
Wykla eyed the shell and nodded at its beauty. "She can have mine too." She displayed the small handfuls of shells she'd picked up.

Zabreth woke up as the waves began to lap a little higher on her body. Cheer chirped from her post between the green's wings as if to say, About time! Getting up and shaking herself, the green moved back to the shore, completely forgetting her annoyance earlier. Kameth! The water was quite nice. Next time when we meet you must swim with me.
Chuckling, Ralae turned about and began to walk back to the dragons. "I am glad to be here at Malvren with Zabreth and you. And Kameth too. Let's head back and then meet up for evening meal. That way we can get these two settled, okay?"
Ralae smiled and looked down at the shells that Wykla held out, happy to have such a wonderful friend. She saw so much more than the shells Wykla offered her and tears came to her eyes. "Thank you. It means so much to me, to us. I'm glad your my friend." Carefully, she took the shells and cradled them with her own. "I can't wait to be in a wing and maybe we will be in one together!"

Wykla turned with her friend. It was getting later. If she was any judge the blue would soon be claiming his hunger. She could stuff him, give him one last oiling so his hide wouldn't stretch too much during the night, then make for dinner herself. It was hard work for a girl her size. And Kameth kept growing. "I'm glad you're here with us too," she smiled. What she wouldn't say was that Ralae was her best friend. "Sound good. I'll see you at dinner, save me a spot."
"Aw don't cry Ralae." She tried to cheer Ral up. "I'd like that a lot." Wykla gave a whistle to call Boreal and Fescues. The two flits fluttered over and settled on her shoulders. If she could get them to help with Kameth she might get done sooner. She waved a farewell and trekked across the sands to the blue ball. "C'mon Kameth. Food and a wash is for you."
Kameth raised his head and blinked at his. He turned his muzzle to the green. I will see if Mine will let me. She may not want me to mar my hide like today. Rising to his feet, the blue waddled after His. Twin trails from his wing tips marked his passage through the sand.
