"You used to sneak out?" SkullCat couldn't help but chuckle. He smiled at the mare, nodding a little. "I used to try and stay up to watch the sun rise when I was a foal. I only managed a few times....and mother and father would get mad. They'd go on about needing my rest, and not being up in the day time..."
He paused, then blinked. "Who is Shimmer, princess?"

She nodded in understanding. “I got caught, often; I’m not very good at being sneaky. I can probably recite the lecture from memory.”
“I’ve only seen the sunrise when my father and sister accidently woke me before dawn. They get up before dawn every day.” She winkled her nose slightly at the thought much preferring to get her beauty sleep. "I do like watching the sunset, the painted sky is lovely."
Shiya blinked startled. “Shimmer’s my lady-in-waiting and best friend. She’s a mouse. I haven’t mentioned her before?”

"No..I don't think so," SkullCat blushed a bit, feeling like he might have missed something. He ducked under a branch, "Watch your head, princess."
He looked up at the sky, then smiled at Shiya, "The sunset, I agree, is better than the sunrise. I see the sunset often. I like to wake up to see it, stretched out. I guess it's like our dawn."
The stallion stepped aside to let her pass, "The clearing should be just past those trees there. Then you can see the whole sky...just about."

Shiya ducked low not wanting to risk getting her mane caught on the branch, that would be embarrassing.
She quickened her step but was careful not to run, that would be unladylike and unfitting of her station. Her sister would tell her she was just being silly but she couldn’t let herself behave in such a fashion, maybe one day she would relax enough to.
Entering the clearing she looked up and sighed happily at the sight of the star filled sky. “Look there’s the winged-horse,” she said excitedly pointing out her favorite constellation.

"Winged horse?" SkullCat followed her into the clearing and looked up. "Winged horse? What sort of wings? Is there one like me up there?"
The stallion had clearly never thought about the constellations, or been taught the names of them. He stared at the sky a moment longer, then looked at Shiya, "Who decided what they were? Who taught you about them?"

“I don’t know if that’s what it’s actually called but it looks like one.” She pointed out the stars that made up the head, body, and bird-like wings. “There’s a unicorn constellation,” she flushed “but I don’t remember were.”
“My Father taught me, where he grew up its necessary to be able to navigate by the stars.”

SkullCat looked at the constellations, then tilted his head. "I suppose they look like that. Kind of how if you stare at tree bark, you can see faces...or the moon. I never thought about the stars having pictures in them."
He looked at the mare, curious about her father. His face didn't hide it, either. "Where did he come from that he would have to navigate by the stars? Why was it important? Do you have to know it too? Why would a princess or ...king?...need to know these?"

Shiya couldn’t help it, she giggled at the sudden on slot of questions. “Father is a prince; Ice Tigers are ruled solely by Queens. I’m not entirely certain where my father’s birth place is, he hasn’t told us, all I know is that it’s somewhere far north and made up almost entirely of ice fields.” She looked north blankly before shaking her head and turning her attention back to SkullCat. “Navigating by stars is one of the safest ways to travel up there as there aren’t many landmarks. Father only taught me so I could travel at night safely; he doesn’t want me or my siblings to go to his homeland as he’s not sure if Grandmother would welcome the children of her exiled son.” She blushed as she noticed she was rambling somewhat.

"Your mother is the head of your family?" SkullCat seemed confused by this, scrunching his nose in thought. "My father is the head of our family...herd...what have you."
He looked to the north when she did, then back to her. "I imagine with it all looking the same, you wouldn't be able to trust landmarks either? Stars would be safer..."
"How come your father was exiled?" the stallion asked, lowering his head as if to show he meant no insult.

She shook her head. “Aunt Undine is the head of our make-shift herd. Mother isn’t an ice tiger,” she paused a moment then continued with a slight frown, “nether is Aunt Undine, she’s a sea nymph, but she has a similar temperament to an ice tiger. Does that make sense?” she asked having confused herself. “He choose it, Grandmother gave him an ultimatum, a political marriage or exile. Father doesn’t know that I know why he left but Frost, that’s Fathers familiar, let it slip.” Shiya gave a slight shrug. “I don’t really understand it but if he hadn’t chosen exile my siblings and I wouldn’t be here so I guess sometimes it’s good to defy tradition.” She was a bit uncomfortable realizing how one decision on her father’s part could have changed everything.

"I can see that. My father chose not to be with a flutter, so here I am," SkullCat nodded, agreeing with her point. "Sometimes you got to strike out your own path, I guess."
"I'm...confused..." the stallion tilted his head at Shiya. "You are an ice tiger herd, but you're led by...a sea nymph."

Shiya shook her head. “We’re not an ice tiger herd; only Father, my sisters and I are ice tigers. Our little herd is made up of all those that live with Father’s two-legger. Mother and my brothers live with Mother’s two-legger, they're still considered part of the herd though. Do you have a two-legger?” she asked curious, she found two-leggers strange and wondered what he thought of them.

"A two-legger?" SkullCat tilted his head in thought, then shook it. "No, I don't think so. If someone claims us, I don't know anything about it. Jame, the patriarch to our herd has never said one way or another. I've never seen one come out here, though."
He sighed, glancing at her wings. "It could also be that I don't know the way, since most of our herd can fly."

“So flying’s a big deal with your herd?” she asked softly hoping not to bring up any bad memories. “Among ice tigers wings are more a status symbol than anything else. I personally prefer to have my hooves on the ground, flying messes up my mane,” she pouted slightly as she said it. She moved closer and gently picked up a strand of his mane, giving it a teasing tug. “I guess that wouldn’t matter as much to a boy,” she said eyes dancing with mischief.

"You never know," SkullCat chuckled, giving her a sly smile. "I think there might be some that would hate to have their hair all windblown."
The stallion shrugged, looking at her wings. "It's not such a big deal. I mean, if it was, Father would not be with Mother. I just often dram waht it might be like to see the ground from the sky.
He looked up, his gold eyes meeting hers. "But that's what dreams are. Dreams. I'm sure others in my family wish they had a horn that could glow...they don't. I do. So, I never worry on it. I can always fly when I'm sleeping. When I'm awake, I'm where I was made to be."
