"Granted, the standard trainee program is meant to weed out the physically unhealthy," Aila said with a shrug. "Specialized training like this generally begins once you choose a department. In essence, I've turned basic training into specialized training. I feel this will be more beneficial to you since you've already completed basic training. That said, if you perceive yourself entering any department besides infiltration and surveillance, you should tell me that now so I can revise my schedule as soon as possible." She hoped she wouldn't have to revise the schedule, especially not for a department with which she wasn't familiar. Her expression turned cautionary at his words on revenge, "I'll agree with the motivation, but I recommend you start getting into the habit of referring to him as Executive Seth. If he hears anything else, I can almost guarantee that more than just your promotion will be at risk."

She understood that concerns were likely to arise in response to the random surveillance, and she was prepared to explain, "I understand if it sounds unethical, but one - I need to be sure your behavior is acceptable both within and outside of my company. And two - this is a criminal organization, after all. It would be strange if it weren't a little unethical from time to time." A faint smirk played at her lips, mischievous insofar as the term could be applied to Aila. At the mention of her eating habits, she shook her head briefly, "I prefer not to eat when I'm not hungry. According to my physical, I'm an appropriate weight for my height and age, so I see no reason to change my habits." A light shrug accented the explanation; it was working out well enough for her, after all.

"In terms of beginning training," she opened the bag she had brought with her, removing a few books, "these materials are references for the origins, foundations, and benefits of subordination and teamwork. There are also psychology manuals and theses on theatre and acting. The latter are supplementary materials to further your abilities in disguised infiltration. I read in your file that you were recently inflicted with a gunshot wound, so you'll be on limited duty until you've healed. I'd like you to review these in the meantime."

"Yes, I realized that. I just find it a little ridiculous that they encourage the 'physically healthy' over the 'mentally healthy'. It seems like a mentally-challenged individual has a better chance of succeeding than a physically-challenged one, which usually results in brawny, empty-headed Rocket members." Taking out his Rocket 'Dex, Izaya began to mess with the touch-screen interface. "Specialized training sounds like something they should put into effect as a standard," he commented, "though I guess not everyone has a specialty. You can be certain I'm sticking to this department, though," Nakura confirmed, implying that she need not modify her schedule.

"Very well. 'Executive Seth' is a mouthful, but I suppose I can deal with that if refer to him minimally." He rubbed his head, as if remembering the bumps he had suffered due to the executive's rough treatment of him.

Laughing at Aila's mention of ethics, Orihara cast her an incredulous look. "Do I seem like the sort of person who hold ethics in high regard?" he asked her once his laughter had died down. "No, no - I'm completely fine with that. I just hope your poor Mismagius doesn't get more than she bargained for in terms of her new task."

Taking note of Aila's smirk, Izaya took a mental picture, unsure when he would catch such an expression on the young woman again. It was intriguing - one of those little things that gave her demeanor such a mysterious air. Many a man would have been throughly infatuated right then and there, but at the moment, attraction to the opposite sex wasn't one of the main things on Izaya's mind. "Suit yourself," he told her, referring to her rejection of his spoon-feeding as he finished off the jello himself. He was only mildly disappointed that she gave no obvious reaction to his intimate gesture, but dared not express even the tiniest hint of the emotion.

Picking up a couple of the books to inspect them, he read a few covers, a few backside summaries, and skimmed through a few pages. "Teamwork, I can understand. Subordination...that's a little odd. It's like reading the benefits of being a good cow on a steak farm," he sighed, flipping through one such book. "I suppose if I'm going to be a cow anyway, though..."

The theater and acting papers seemed a lot more intriguing, and the psychology manuals were certain to be fun. He would make sure to save those for last. "You've covered quite a bit of ground with this meager selection right here. I'm thinking I'll be kept pretty busy until this shoulder of mine heals," he noted, beginning on a large text that was composed mostly of the origins of teamwork. "Thank you very much, agent. Oh, and one more thing," he added, half in jest. "Will there be a test covering this material?"

"Intelligence is challenged on missions. If you can't think quick and think well, you don't survive. Your teammates can help you out of a tight spot, but you won't always act alongside a team, sometimes not even alongside a partner." She specifically referenced her own recent solo mission to Sagestone; it had been an interesting experience, vaguely nerve-wracking at times but immensely rewarding to have accomplished it on her own. "It's also true that not everyone joins a department. We have a number of field agents who work almost exclusively to steal pokemon for Team Rocket's use.

She nodded approvingly as he conceded to use Seth's proper title, a slightly cynical laugh responding to the sympathy for her ghost-type, "There's no need to worry about my Revenant. She was the first pokemon I caught, and I would trust her with anything." It was a strange thought, when she remembered how incredibly difficult the thing had been to train as a Misdreavus.

"Well, it goes both ways," she said as he voiced his thoughts on subordination. "You are a subordinate to some, and you are a superior to others. It's important to know how to earn and keep respect from both parties." Mm, well a trainee was superior to none, but if he improved as he said he would, it wouldn't be too terribly long before he was returned to grunt status.

She inclined her head slightly with a similar smile, "I don't see that that will be necessary. The reading is interesting, even where there are disagreeable points, so I don't feel any need to threaten you to read it." Any jest or playfulness fell from her tone, "I also have one more thing to address. I told you before that this is a team and your actions will affect others, yes? I told Seth that I would take all responsibility for your actions. I'm not sure if that means anything to you, but I would appreciate it if you'd keep it in mind as you go about your activities." She had no wish to be reprimanded again, and after offering up full responsibilities she had a fairly good idea that that reprimand wouldn't end with just a stern talking-to.

"Well, I know that, and you know that, but what about the people who come up with the standard basic training?" Izaya questioned. "All of that seems based on doing what you're told and building strength and endurance. What, do they wait until missions to weed out the dimmer lightbulbs of the bunch?" he asked, frowning. "That seems kind of late in the game to tell a Rocket that they're too stupid to be efficient at their job. Is it just hoped that they'll pick things up as they go, or end up paying for it?"

"Also...wouldn't 'working almost exclusively' to do something sort of put someone into a department by default?" the trainee wanted to know. Maybe she was referring to multi-taskers or Jacks-of-all-Trades.

"I don't think you understand what I mean," Orihara mused as Aila once again brought up the topic of her pokemon spy. "But if you trust her to be mentally scarred for life watching naked men shower and go about their everyday activities, by all means, go right ahead."

Realizing Aila had a point as far as subordination went, he stroked his chin theatrically and nodded. "I didn't think of it that way. Fair enough~ I guess the pecking order doesn't really work if the people on the bottom don't do as they're told." Time to cooperate.

Ooh, another smile from the agent. This was quite a treat for the trainee. It was more than he could ever hope to get out of Seth, anyway. "I'm so glad," he replied, snickering. But as soon as it had come, Aila's playfulness was gone. "I...see..." he answered slowly, allowing the implications of her statement to sink in. That meant that she was essentially depending on him to make things right, putting the responsibility of both their careers as Rockets on his shoulders, even while, ironically, Aila was the one in charge of him.

"You know, I meant what I said before in the brig, Aila," he told her, meeting her gaze. "I'm not going to let you down again."

"People who are sincerely daft are pegged as such, I believe," she said with a slight shrug. "It's hard to hide stupidity, after all. And if the idiots do make it through the cracks, missions will point that out, and the superiors can do something about it from there." She leaned forward slightly, lacing her fingers and resting her chin on the cradle. "It's worth noting that I've never met a single legitimately stupid individual in Team Rocket," she informed. "People who make bad choices, people who have a little less common sense, people who aren't the most socially graceful, certainly. But never someone who is simply an idiot through and through."

She inclined her head in thought as she considered the field agents. "Well, not exactly. It doesn't really take any special skills to steal a pokemon from a trainer. For example, if you had to break into a house to steal it, you'd be with infiltration. If you had to build a machine to contain it, you'd be with tech. If you had to manipulate its DNA, you'd be with the labs."

The slightest redness crept across her face as Izaya spelled out his implications, a mildly offended huff indicating that her noble's sensibilities were getting the better of her. "She has more tact than that. Besides, it's not as though she'll be observing you at all hours. The point is that the surveillance is random and unknown, so you can't be prepared for it and act accordingly."

The shift in his tone suggested that he was indeed thinking seriously about her words, and Aila was grateful for that. She had no desire to be demoted because of the actions of another, but if that threat would encourage the appropriate behavior, then she was willing to take the risk. At his assertion, she nodded, "I'm glad to hear it, then. I look forward to seeing how you improve here. Despite what you might think of it so far, this is a truly wonderful environment."

"That's true enough," Orihara agreed, accepting Aila's explaination. "And maybe you're just more lenient in your standards when judging someone to be 'legitimately stupid' or not. Everyone has an excuse. Whether or not they're legitimate is debatable." He chuckled. "For example: I think it's safe to say that a certain executive wouldn't hesitate to put me in that category. And after what I did to provoke him, I suppose I don't have much room to argue." Sure, the first part in angering the executive had been accidental, but it had been more an act of spite than anything once Seth had been sentenced him to another round of basic training.

"Alright, alright, you win with the field agents," Nakura replied, wanting to move on to more important topics. The faint change in her complexion indicated that she finally caught his meaning. "In case you didn't know, my bathroom needs are kind of 'random and unknown' too, but with luck, your 'Revenant' will have more tact than to check on me at less convenient times."

Getting up, he took his tray with him, wincing slightly as he twisted his back. He'd forgotten about that bullet wound. "Oh, I never doubted for a second that it was a 'wonderful environment," he replied cheerfully. "My suspicions were only confirmed when I was sent out to get some liquid soap refills for the bathrooms and came back with a bullet in my body. Nearly punctured my lung. Oh, and that Porygon-Z that was flung at my head! That really convinced me!"

While Izaya fully planned to cooperate and do his best to repair both his and Aila's reputations, he didn't want anyone to think of him as a pushover. He certainly didn't want Aila to believe that he felt any sort of concern or consideration for her sake, no matter the truth. Therefore, though he would go through everything as planned, he wasn't going to make it easy either. Sarcasm and smart-aleck back-talk were still a part of him and he wasn't going to give them up anytime soon.

"Mm, I'm not sure about that. I have painfully little tolerance for stupidity. Seth's evaluation of you is based on a single incidence during which, one could argue, you indeed acted quite stupidly." Generally anyone who knew the executive's name also knew his reputation, and generally anyone who knew his reputation would make a point of avoiding angering the man, or at least make a point of withdrawing when it was obvious that he was in a bad mood.

"She'll be fine," she insisted with a slightly indignant crossing of her arms. "I should warn you against intentionally giving her a hard time, though. She's not known for her tolerance." Nor was she known for her self-control. What she was known for was for being an incorrigible trickster and an antagonist. Though she had calmed down considerably since the ball, and even more since her evolution, Aila might have been just a little worried to give the Mismagius free rein of the base.

She frowned slightly. "Since coming here, I've met people who genuinely care about my well-being for veritably no reason at all. I've gained allies of both the human and pokemon variety, and I had the opportunity to fulfill my life's wish handed to me on a platter by an elite who recognized and remembered that wish. I've also had people dislike me even though I was civil, I've been shouted at and disdained for my actions, and I was nearly killed by a Ho-Oh. It's a criminal organization - it can't all be sunshine and smiles." The good balanced out with the bad, as long as one was open to experiences.

"You are indeed wise," he complimented Aila as she explained the difference between her and Seth's evaluation of him. "And if your pokemon is going to be invisible, how would I be able to intentionally give her ha hard time?" He could think of a few ways, actually, but he wasn't about to raise Aila's suspicions of him by listing them. "It's not as though I'll know when she's around." Unless, of course, Celty decided to chat with her fellow ghost-type.

He suddenly began to wonder if the ghosts could sense each other, which lead him sequentially to ponder if Aila was aware he had stolen a Spiritomb before entering Team Rocket. If she had read his file throughly enough to even learn about the recent bullet wound, though, chances were she had. In any case, while Orihara was unaware of the mischevious nature of Revenant, he did not worry knowing that Celty was close by his side to protect him.

"...Genuinely care?" Oh dear, this young woman was perhaps as deluded as naive young Xander. According to Izaya, no one 'genuinely cared' for one another unless there was something to be gained. "Of course there are reasons," Nakura countered, amused. "One of many is your continued loyalty and subordination. Another is your usefulness to them as an agent. For a girl of noble birth, Aila-chan, I'm surprised you're so willing to believe in their shows of affection for you," the trainee replied.

"You of all people should know this sort of thing is just business. You give them what they want, they give you what you want - it's a mutual partnership, nothing more. If they can get you to believe otherwise, however, then perhaps they might be able to milk more out of you than what's simply mutual."

He waved a finger knowledgably. "A man paid for his services is no match for a man who is loyal to his cause. That's because the loyal one is more likely to put his life down on the line, whether or not his cause would be willing to do the same for him." He smirked darkly.

"Don't let them pull you in. You're a sensible girl. And as you said yourself," he added, grinning, "It's a criminal organization. What reason would they have to 'genuinely care' for their individual members?" Now if she said she felt cared about by certain individuals, such as that elite who recognized her wish - and Izaya had his own idea of who that might have been - then perhaps she might have been right. But as a whole, the man thought Aila was fooling herself. Certainly Trainee Nakura didn't expect things to be fine and dandy, but he would never decieve himself into believing that anyone genuinely cared about him.

"You're wrong, by the way," he commented as an afterthought. "I've seen smiles. Especially yours. Smile for me again, won't you? It's gorgeous."

She could have named a few ways for him to antagonize the ghost-type, but she chose not to describe them. She'd simply have to warn Revenant of the possibility that he would mess with her and hope the Mismagius didn't respond too rashly. She had read reports that mentioned the Spiritomb but was similarly unsure of whether or not the two ghosts would detect one another. Perhaps Revenant would even find an ally in Celty; she didn't seem to get along with others well...

"I disagree," she said, shaking her head slightly, as Izaya made his case against her words. "I would have agreed up until late December, when an agent towards whom I had always been curt and disdainful found me when I was upset and offered comfort with nothing to gain for himself." She directed her gaze to her hands on the table, still slightly embarrassed over her behavior that day. "He spoke to me even though I tried to make him leave. Tears don't suit me, he said. Don't face it alone, he said. He's never gained a thing from telling me those words." She raised her rose-colored eyes in an earnest expression. "There are people here whom I genuinely care about. For many of us, Team Rocket is the closest thing to a family we have, even if we're all criminals. I sincerely believe that I'm not the only person here who feels that way."

She inclined her head to a side at his comment, "Criminals are human too. Everyone here will smile when they have a reason to." Read: she felt no inclination to smile at the moment.

While Izaya really had no intentions of messing with Revenant, at least he could manage to keep up his proud reputation by allowing Aila to think that he did. As for Celty, she probably wouldn't even have harmed a fly even if Izaya had asked her to.

"A guy? Perhaps he just took a liking to your outer appearances," Nakura answered, still unable to understand Aila's concepts. "Perhaps you haven't had enough experience with men, but sweet nothings like, 'tears don't suit you', are actually quite common. Overdone, even. It's a cliché line that almost guarantees his motives." He looked as though he was having a hard time not laughing. If the man's words meant enough to Aila for her to memorize his quotes, they certainly must have had an impact. The trainee hoped for her sake that she wasn't in love or falling into it.

He shrugged, empty palms held out to his sides as she confessed that there were people she cared about in Team Rocket. "I guess that makes sense. It's the similar idea of a gang. A family that does crime together does time together, neh?" he snickered. "Or keeps each other out of jail, at least. And I suppose it's human nature to grow feelings for those you spend time with if you spend time with them long enough."

"Of course criminals are human too," he agreed. "That's why I'm here. I love humans. They're so fascinating." Reaching over to tap her nose, he sighed as she wordlessly refused to smile. "Aila-chan is no fun at all~ Ah well. It was worth a try."

She exhaled a brief sigh. "If you're having trouble believing in the idea that humans can have consideration for one another's well-being, you should think about the reasons I recruited in the first place, or the reasons I asked to be your supervisor rather than your executioner." Somewhat abruptly, she pushed away from the table and stood, "Everyone here is here with their own goal in mind. If we don't believe in one another in spite of that, then it's meaningless to call us a team. We won't accomplish anything." A slight temper settled in her tone. "I can't speak for everyone, but I'll support my team just as they've supported me."

A subtle dodge of his gesture betrayed the possibility that she was offended, irritated, or possibly simply tired. "You have a week of limited duty. I expect you to look over those materials thoroughly. You should also give some thought to training your pokemon while your own body heals."
PostPosted: Sat Apr 30, 2011 6:01 pm

"It's not that I don't believe humans can have consideration for one another," the man laughed. "I just don't think they can without ulterior motives. Whether they themselves are aware of it or not, there's no such thing as a selfless act." Examining his nails, he finished disposing of his trash and placing his tray in its proper place before returning to the table.

"Yes...I'm still not quite sure of your reasoning behind those two actions. Maybe you just like me," he teased before she withdrew from the table to stand.

"Oi, I'm all for supporting teams," Nakura assured her. "As I said, it's a mutual business arrangement. A sort of, 'you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours' type thing. Even if certain members dislike each other, we can still work as a team." He thought back to the escape of the invaded outpost. "Pardon me; I hadn't meant to offend you, Aila-chan, if that's what I did." Perhaps he had gone a little too far with attempt to rationalize the quote of the agent she held in such high regard.

"...Understood," he acknowledged quietly after taking a moment to study her face in silence. "Yes, Celty and I have arranged for that..." He looked away. "Very well, then. I'll see you in a week, Agent Aila." Getting up again, he dusted off his jacket, making a mental note to find someone who could fix it, and turned toward the exit. "I'll likely be in the Trainee dorms if you need me. Ja ne," he added in Japanese with a two-fingered salute. With that, Orihara picked up his newly-assigned reading material, tucked it under his arm, and took his leave.
