While Christof was set on going to one place, Calder was all for just wandering around and enjoying themselves as they went along. His eyes darted from one store to another, catching flashes of lights and rolling smog coming out of various stores. A witch was checking a price tag of a cauldron from a nearby cooking store while, darting his eyes to another store, he saw a green ghoul spay on a cloud of red smoke from a perfume bottle.
Dragged along, Calder almost tripped before he caught his balance and started to follow his friend with a tad more focus. "Where are we going?"

Thankfully for Christof, their target lay straight ahead, and he was able to point with a grunt to the large book store. He finally let go of Calder's arm, his steps slowing as he glanced about the countless titles and signs and twists and turns of bookshelves for any sign of the section he had in mind...

He spotted the bookstore before he was lead in and then, released. OH! Christof was here for books. Well, if Christof was here to look around....
When Christof went to look through titles, Calder did the same, but moving to a different direction. He had enough study material in his room, thank you very much, that he didn't want to get a book on history or science. Then again, when did he EVER want those topics. Sticking out his tongue at various sections like Lobotomy for Morons and The 4 Organ Diet, he paused when he noticed he went to a small romance section. Tapping a finger to his chin, he looked through, eying a few titles in utter distaste. What the heck sort of section was this?! What lame titles, and it was such a small section!
Huffing, Calder flicked his tail before noticing a storybook section that also had a few coloring books.

The hunchback hadn't noticed his friend wandering away, scouring intently until- ahah! They were all mostly boring books, "Howls n' Growls: a study in lycantherope linguistics", "How to speak Leprechaun", and- yes! It was thankfully unpopular by the looks of it, several copies all stacked up. He'd only need three, though. It would definitely do. After giving it a quick thumb-through, he nodded triumphantly and tucked them under his arm-
-only to finally sense the absence of kelpie. Fantastic. Hopefully he hadn't wandered too far...

Calder was looking at a large picture book of Hand-sel and Gruntle and flipping at the pages, enjoying the large illustrations. He only had a few books growing up, but most stories were told to him orally. It was nice to have his parents act it out, but he did love being able to take a book on his own, sit down, and look at the pages. Smiling thoughtfully, his ear twitched when he heard someone approach and glanced to see Christof.
Holding out his book to the scene were the witch is luring the children into her house, Calder smiled. "I think I could make a children's book. I can draw." He said, as if he was seeking advice on a future career. Spotting that Christof had three books in his own hands, Calder lowered his and tried to read it. "What did you get?" It was too large to be a romance novel and too small and thick to be a kid's book.

Christof flushed, eyes darting to the side before offering out a copy to the kelpie. One... was for him after all.
"Basics of Sign: When vocals just don't work- two limbed version."
He had gotten in trouble when trying to use his mouth... but what would his Creator do? Cut off his hands? And besides... he didn't have to know.

Setting the storybook back on the shelf, Calder took the other book and read the title. His eyes started to narrow, and he glanced from one limb to the next to make sure he was qualified, and then back at the book. Taking it, he flipped it open, ears perking. "Hey, pictures." Yeah, that was nice, though he was wondering what it was all about. He looked back at the stack the boy had. "Are there three volumes? That's a lot to study. Do you need help?" He had no idea this one was given to him with the intent that it would be his copy.
Calder continued to flip through the book, not really sure what it was about, but pausing when there was the word fish and a picture of a zombie making their hand look like a fish, wiggling it forward as if it was a trout. That...wasn't a fish. It was a hand. Confused, he closed the book and looked at the cover again.

Christof's eyes looked hopeful as he watched Calder's reaction carefully before tapping the cover of the book, pointing to his chest and then his temple. He tapped the cover of the stack of books under his arm, pointed to himself, then to Calder, and then to the door, lifting his hands to try to mime "Horns" without dropping anything.
Finally, he gave an exasperated snort, holding out the other two copies in hopes that would clarify.

He followed the gestures, which was becoming a tricky art at this point to understand, and usually meant that he got half and then missed the mark. In fact, their miscommunication right now was exactly what Christof was explaining why he had the books in his hands, but Calder wasn't getting to that point yet. He watched the boil point at him and the book, and got that point. "Oh, it's for me to read?" He asked, and then looked at the other books which, upon being shown, were the same book. No second edition, and one was pointed to Christof and another out the door to...someplace else. He didn't guess the last part, but got the other book was for Christof. "...and that one is yours?" Looking at the door, he wondered if the other book was for Riley. She did give him the money, but despite that, he felt privileged that Christof was putting him up that high in regard.
Looking at the book where Christof turned the book over for him to read, Calder slowly looked over the summary. Welcome to the exciting world of sign language, where gestures have meanings! ..................No face required. Fingers preferred. Flesh not necessary. He got a clearer idea and then, when it sank in, he perked up. "So this book shows you how to talk with your fingers?" That was neat!
"Because....you didn't like the tongue...right?" They never really talked about why Christof had gotten his stitches back and gave up on the tongue. He....guessed he never liked it.

Christof's face flushed and his smile faded. Swallowing, he opened one of the volumes, thumbing until he found the page he needed in the index and then back to the proper number. Shuffling the copies under his arms he patted his chest and made the proper gesture. It was one he was confident the Kelpie would soon become very familiar with.

Calder had to peek at the page Christof was using to get the sign and looked at the Igor before looking at the page and seeing the word Trouble. Frowning, he looked back up, not sure what that meant. "A mouth....causes trouble? Or you got in trouble?" Oh, what we he doing?! This was probably exactly why Christof wanted this book, though he wasn't sure why the mouth caused trouble. He seemed to be happy with it before.
"You seemed to like kissing, right?" He looked down at the book and then back at the Igor. "So....if you talked in this way, there would be no trouble? Then whenever I talk to you, you could talk right back? No being huffy and giving me the cold shoulder like you did after the dance? Right?" He seemed to almost plead that last part, hopeful that this book would somehow solve some of their friendship problems. He hated when Christof refused to write in his book at times, deciding just to be quiet and huff at him, and then started hitting him.
"You never did tell me about how your date went." Calder grumbled, pouting as he looked at at the book.

The hunchback's expression softened, and he juggled the books to pull out his notebook once again, leaning against the stack as he scribbled out,
Learn the books. Will try another experiment. Hope there will be no trouble this time.
He traded the notebook for Calder's copy of the language guide, and then turned to lurch towards the check out line, still looking embarrassed.
He hoped it would help at least. He was tired of scrawling notes.

He read the note over, and watched the Igor walk off. Experiment. He hoped that it would work. These ...hand gesture words. If they could talk together, just the two of them, it was like he would have his own direct line to talk to Christof and no one else would. It was the sort of privileged privacy that started to make him giddy, and he followed behind, thinking about it. "I hope you don't get in trouble." He said. "...but if you were in trouble, you should have sai - uh...written something. That's why I'm here." Instead, Christof had just left him in the dark which wasn't nice at all.
He lingered before smiling. "So how did the date go?" He asked, offering a hand if Chrsitof needed help with the books in order to write.

Christof let Calder take the books from him, stepping forward as the line shortened ahead of them to scribble into his notebook with a sigh:
Not so good. Let me kiss her. Twice. But did not come back to my room.
It had been a travesty of a kidnapping attempt, that was for sure.

He read the note and frowned. "Well, at least you got to make out a bit. That's at least a perk. Better off than I did." He patted his buddy on the back. "You were too good for her anyways. Probably too much Igor to handle. If anything, call her up and see if she wants to hang out sometime. Though, if she's too prissy, leave her. Plenty of fogs in the swamp." He grinned, ever optimistic in love. At least his friend managed to get a few kisses in, and that was always a perk. He just had to find someone now that didn't mind not kissing considering that Christof wasn't going to use his mouth. Maybe someone who liked holding hands and getting grabby.
"Looking at anyone else now?" He asked, curious if Christof was off landing some more dates.
