It made no difference to Jack whether or not Devi received phone calls on a regular basis. The only people who really ever called him were his mother and his sister, and that was usually to berate him for some reason or another. Most of the time he kept his phone on 'silent.'

Jack's preference was for text messaging. Generally, it was more convenient.

He pouted a little when Devi cut off his phone call, and returned his cellphone to his pocket.

"I don't have a car, as a matter of fact."

Jack checked his hair where he could see himself in the shiny surface of the table.

"I do have a truck."

It belonged to his mother.

To Devi, a truck was a car. She saw no difference: if it was on four wheels, had a steering wheel, gas and break pedals, and an engine then it was a car. Unless he meant a semi-truck or a sixteen-wheeler- but somehow, Devi didn’t see Jack as the type to be driving around a semi-truck. Although she know as little about trucks as she did about quantum physics, she did know that boys tend to like to talk about their cars. Or trucks. Same difference.

“Oooh,” she feigned an interest. It was somewhat obvious that her ‘oooh’ was fake, but she carried on. “What kind of truck do you have?” She placed her elbows on the table and rested her chin in her cupped hands, looking reminiscent of a boy-crazy schoolgirl talking to the quarterback.

Jack and Devi, it seemed, had more in common than a fondness for the theatre. It made him smirk, to see her pretending such interest in a topic that he knew just as much about.

He chuckled softly to himself, and ran his fingers through his hair.

"Its a truck with satellite radio," a shrug, followed by an exaggerated wink, "and heated seats."

This came out sounding twice as playful as it was suggestive. While it was true that Jack thought Devi was very adorable, in her own special way, he did not actually expect anything. Outside of casual teasing and wiggling his eyebrows, there would be no real pressure.

Especially not on a first date, when she was little more than a stranger.

Class. He had it.

Any sexual suggestiveness that may have been implied had flown right over Devi’s head, but it did become clear to her that he was making one. Devi responded as she does to any sexual suggestiveness: stare blankly until her expression shifts to a look of worry, and then laugh awkwardly. Her awkward laugh in this situation was more of a short, millisecond-long giggle that ends abruptly with a low-toned grunt and ends in a snort. Usually a hand covering her in embarrassment followed, such as in this case.

“I like heated seats,” she said with oddly placed pauses between her words. She paused for a moment and pondered telling Jack about her past, with Damian and their recent break up – how he dumped her immediately after first having sex. While there was more to the story, she had felt so used after that, and was worried about dating again and ending up in the same position. However, her better instincts stopped her. It probably wasn’t best to bring up her baggage on a first meeting.

However, that didn’t mean she couldn’t beat around the bush and figure out his intentions. “So, how do you imagine this date going exactly?”

Devi's awkwardness didn't phase Jack in the slightest. He leaned forwards in his seat, as though the uneasy series of noises that spilled from between her lips were the most endearing things in the world, and just kept on smiling. It was clear to him that she had little experience with this sort of thing. Devi wasn't confident or sexy, but she was very sweet. Jack was interested in being her friend.

"Oh," he sighed dreamily, and waved his hand through the air, "I imagine we'll just skip the theatre altogether, even though I've probably used a couple months allowance to pay for the tickets. You'll use those irresistible feminine wiles of yours to take advantage of me in the back of my own mother's truck."

"Then," Jack's lips twitched, "We'll fornicate like rabbits, until you get tired of me, and walk away with my heart forever."

His pressed his palm to the left side of his chest, and blinked at Devi with soulful eyes.

"I suspect you'll forget all about me," there was a whimsical, defeated sort of note in Jack's voice, "and I'll be left picking up the pieces."

"Now," he said, the expression on his face so serious it was ridiculous, and looked Devi in the eye. "You tell me what you think will happen. I am totally cool with any or all of the above."

Devi frowned, visibly upset. But then she closed her eyes, sucked in some air, took a deep breath out and pulled herself together.

"I wouldn't do any of those things to you," she said firmly. She had wanted to mention her break up before, but had resisted, but it felt like an appropriate time now. "Look, I got out of a relationship recently that didn't end well. Well, it ended sort of like you described. We slept together, and then he left me." Of course, there was a lot to that story she was leaving out. Just simple small things, like her acts of torture and being branded by her friends. "So no, I don't think the date will go like that. I think that if the date goes nicely, we might hold hands or you might get a kiss." She smiled at that thought.

Her smile then changed to a serious expression as she said threateningly, "And if that happens, then you better call me and not forget."

Oh, he had such a fat mouth.

Apologizing wasn't something Jack generally made a habit of. This had more to do with being arrogant than it did being impolite. Jack liked to think of himself as an honest man, and didn't often say things unless he meant them.

But the remorse he felt at Devi's distress was sincere, and so was the guilty half-smile he offered her now. He hadn't known that his little game would cause her any pain, and was feeling pretty badly about himself to see that it had.

"I was only joking," he said, voice soft. "We can do whatever you like."

Jack had loved women, and lost them. But it wasn't all about getting laid. It was about being with them. Most of the time, in Jack's opinion, ladies smelled and looked better than anything else in the world. If he'd had it his way, all of them would be his girlfriends.

He also took Devi's threat to heart, and fitted her consciously into his 'friends' circle. It was not really Jack's first choice, but he was also wary of angry chicks with grudges against their ex-boyfriends.
