James sighed and said, "It's entirely plausible that I might ask you that. But don't worry. I won't let any harm come to you, no matter what." James looked forward for a moment, seeing where the car was and how far they had to go; two minutes. James looked very serious for a moment and said, "Some big people want me dead for some very little reasons. And they're after you because the know what you mean to me..." James looked at Lyra for a long while, not saying anything, just looking her over. He frowned again and said, "I can't believe they took away your memories... those sons of..." James now had a very sad look in his eyes, as though he had just lost his best friend. He turned back around, looked at his watch and said, "Thirty seconds, hold on tight." The car went even faster, and James could see the sign for the city limits up ahead, they were going to make it.
Not half a second after the car passed the city limits, a loud echoing boom came from the center of the city and a glowing green ball of energy shot up into the air, hanging there for a few moments before exploding out, covering the entire city in a strange green energy field. James laughed and said, "Well that's a relief! That'll give us a break for a while. They can't leave that barrier, nor can anyone enter it. If they want to chase us, they'll have to wait until it dissipates, in about a week." James placed is hand gently on the dashboard and said, "You can slow down now girl, just get us somewhere we can stop so I can explain everything to Lyra." The car's engine revved in response and the car slowed down to the speed limit and continued heading down the highway. James turned to Lyra again and smiled lightly, he was so happy to see her again.

Lyra stared at him as he watched her feeling slightly uncomfortable, "fine then don't tell me," she mumbled figuring it probably had something to do with a political figure. she had learned long ago that politics were like that, underhanded and full of empty promises which was why she hated the field, it was all nasty business. he mumbled something about her memories and she remained silent as she wondered what she had forgotten just as the green light flashed over the city and she let out a cry looking back. "what was that! what just happened?" she looked out the rear window to see the green light slowly vanish as she wondered if anyone had been hurt. the buildings still appeared to be standing, but were the people okay?

James looked back at Lyra and said, "Don't worry, it's just a big invisible wall, everyone is fine." James sighed and ran his hand up through his hair, lightly scratching his head. He was happy and angry at the same time; he was happy that he had found Lyra again, but he was both angry and sad that the hunters had erased everything that had happened between the two of them. He simply sat in silence as the car drove along the road, heading for some place they could stop and rest.
After a few more minutes, the car pulled into a small motel on the side of the road. James sighed and looked back at Lyra, smiling lightly and saying, "Well, we're safe for a little while, hang on for a minute or two, I'll be right back." James got out of the car and shut the door before walking into the motel's office. A minute or so later he came back out and got in the car, driving it to the front of their room. He turned back to Lyra and asked, "Can you help me get the bags into the room? Here's your key." James got back out of the car again and took a few of the bags out of the car, leaving only one or two for Lyra to grab. When the bags and Lyra were out of the car, James placed his hand on the car and mumbled something, the car slowly turned back into the metal block, but once it did, it shrunk in size, turning into a small cube that fit in the palm of James' hand. He placed it in his pocket and grabbed some of the bag, heading inside the room. Setting the bags down at the foot of one of the two beds, James sat down on it and sighed, looking up at Lyra with a smile on his face and asking, "Okay, now that we're safe for a while, you can ask me anything you want, I'll try my best to answer." James' yellow eyes glittered lightly, in the low light of the room they actually seemed to glow.

Lyra carried the bags into the room and tossed them on the bed wincing when she thought she saw dust rise off the comforter. Motels were usually dirty, she recalled standing and looking about the room before sighing and sitting on the other bed. "this might just be a dream that i am waiting to wake up from, but i have to know, what the hell is going on!?" she said rather calmly after the long moment of awkward silence that had followed her abrupt seating. "you keep talking of memory wiping, invisible barriers, and you were even talking to the car that drove on it's own, and it even folded it's self into a small box for goodness sakes!" her voice raised slightly in the end as she recalled all the bizarre events that had happened within the last half hour. she really wanted to go home, she did not like having to rely on this man she had just met, but she really had no choice.

As James started to explain what this was all about, the hunters were back in the city, trying to find him and Lyra. Notably, one hunter in particular, Merrill D. Havik, one of the most dangerous hunters around. Merrill was taking the lead on this mission, she commanded the hunters dispatched around the city, and she was standing in the living room of the woman who the demon had contacted. "Where did he go... where did he bring her... What was her name? Lyra Morgan? And what does he call himself now? 'James'? Why would a demon Overseer of Justice stoop to using a human name? What the hell does she even mean to him?" Merrill kicked the nearby chair, knocking it over. She growled and said to the hunters nearby, "We need to find them! Search the surrounding area, and prepare for the possibility that they may have escaped before the barrier fell." She stepped out of the room and pulled out her phone. Dialing the number for the mission supervisor, she answered when she picked up, "Ma'am, we lost track of them. They may have escaped the city. Yes Ma'am. The barrier was set for an entire week ma'am." With that, the supervisor hung up. Merrill sighed and turned back to the hunters, kicking at the chair again. "That a*****e took her and split... b*****d." She motioned for the rest of the hunters to follow her as she left the apartment and headed out to her car. Slamming the car door she said, "Fan out and find them. If they're still in the city, I want them found!" She started her car and drove down the street, full speed at the barrier. When her car hit it, it glowed brightly and broke through, the barrier reforming behind her.

an annoying yet spine tingling, hyena like chuckle came from the back seat of Merrill's car as she sped down the road. "Wasn't there was he?" the man chuckled and hiccuped slightly as he pulled himself off the back seat and rested his head next to her head rest on her drivers seat. "please dont say you did not expect this, what fun would this mission have been if you had been able to grab him right away?" the figure chuckled just as he brought a can of soda up to his mouth he took a sip like a drunk might from a bottle full of whiskey.
"what are you thinking of doing now? gonna try and find them yourself?" he asked trailing a hand around the other side of the seat to run a finger over her shoulder while she drove a drunken smile on his face as if he found everything she did some what amusing. "or perhaps you might start looking for the young woman's closest of kin, try and lure them to you?" Taking another swing from the soda can and chuckling. This man had several times invited himself onto more than one of her missions. The immortal had found life a bit more amusing since the day he had meet her, "Just so you know i have decided to hitch a ride with you this time" he chuckled again falling back into the back seat as he waited to see her reaction.

Merrill growled when she heard the all too familiar chuckle sound from her back seat. She sighed and said, paying no mind to the man's drunken attitude, "You know, I could just throw you out of the car, I don't need you to find them." Merrill continued heading down the road, looking for any sign that the demon and the woman were anywhere nearby. She shivered when he ran a finger over her shoulder, and couldn't bring herself to make a snappy retort. The immortal had decided to follow her around quite a bit once he met her, and past the annoying chuckle and her insistence that she didn't need him, she couldn't help but like him. She knew he was an immortal, and that he always acted like a drunken idiot, but other than that, and his power to make her spine tingle and her entire body shiver, she didn't know a damn thing about him, not even his real name. She shook of the tingling in her spine and said, her voice insistent, "The woman has no other family that we know of, so we can't lure them that way. Obviously we're going to find them ourselves. Meaning you're not just accompanying me, you're going to help me. I know immortals never really take sides, but you are following me around, so put those magic fingers to good use."
Merrill sighed as her hair fell in front of her face and she had to brush it out of the way. "This mission is just full of odd couples... A demon of justice and a human, and a hunter with an immortal... wait... couples... me and the immortal? Nah, couldn't be... just because every time his fingers touch my skin my spine tingles doesn't mean... does it? Damn it... now isn't the time Merrill, gotta stay focused. It's not as though the immortal is going anywhere after this mission..." Merrill took a few deep breaths to try and calm down, and it didn't exactly work. After a few more minutes in silence, she spoke, without looking back, "What is your name... just calling you 'immortal' is silly. You've been following me for a while and you know a lot more than just my name." She then waited for the man's response, it was only a few minutes before they reached a small motel and stopped there for a bit, completely unaware that their objective was in the room just next door to them.
=====
James sighed and put his head back, resting it on the headboard of the bed. He looked at his watch, held out his hand and snapped his fingers, a white fire appearing in the center of his palm. He sighed and simply said, "Looks like it's that time of the week again..." No sooner had he let his sentence trail than the fire died and his hair started to glow the same white color. His eyes changed color and black tattoos appeared on his skin. He groaned in pain as he felt the power level in his body skyrocket. His eyes burned white, and his hair looked as though it was a separate living organism with a mind of its own. James groaned again and the colors flickered back to normal slowly, his hair fading back to black and falling back down to his shoulders. He breathed heavily and his yellow eyes burned brightly, he needed to calm down. After a few minutes, James sighed and relaxed, the wave had passed and he looked at Lyra and said, "Sorry about that... so, what would you like to know?"

The immortal chuckled again in the back seat, "A name huh? I haven't used one of those in a while" he hummed and vanished in a slight puff of smoke as Merrill removed herself from her car. Instantly he appeared by her side again like the cheshire cat from Alice and wonderland might. "I'm curious as to why you haven't just given me one, ill admit that Immortal is a interesting name, but not practical, so I'm surprised you all still call me that." he crossed his hands behind his back as he chuckled a bit more and moved to look at her as they walked to the motel room.
He vanished again as she placed the key to their room into the door and was found staring at her as she opened the door. "you know that human gave the demon (instert true name) his new name" he said to her as he fell back onto the nearest bed and watched her. "it seems he has a thing for the human, which i find kind of funny," he lazed back and pulled out a necklace that he had held in his pocket. and began to play with the gold hour glass at the end of the chain. "Don't demons consume human souls?" he paused as he felt a strong energy some where close by being released then cut off. ----------------------------------------- Lyra sat still at the edge of her bed trying to absorb everything James had told her about the unknown side of the world. the hunters, and the creatures that hid from her kind. It was a lot to think about since she had always read stories of creatures like those he mentioned, but could hardly grasp the concept. She doubted him, she could not believe everything she had seen until James spoke again, the white light appearing on his hand then vanishing as his face twisted in pain, shocked she stood and watched as the tattoos appeared on his face and his hair turned white and began to move on it's own it seemed to reach for her and she stumbled back, colliding with the dresser and falling to the floor as he changed back to normal and she stared wide eyed at him. she was not sure she wanted to be with him any more, "wha- what was that!?" she squeaked a hand raised slightly as she shook.

Merrill scoffed at the immortal and said, "Yeah, they eat human souls and use their energy as their life force." She rolled her eyes as he fiddled wit the hourglass on the end of the necklace they had taken from the girl. She sat down on the other bed in the room, sighing lightly and saying, "I don't know why you want me to give you the name. And if you hadn't noticed, no one else talks to you. Just me." Merrill reached down and started undoing her boots, removing them from her feet and sighing in relief; she never really liked her boots, they were too rough on her feet. She started removing her gear, placing her guns and other weapons on the stand next to her bed. She stood up and cracked her neck, she was tired. She looked at her watch and groaned; it was still relatively early in the day. She looked at the immortal and said, "If you really want me to name you... I suppose I'll call you... Jack." With that Merrill turned and undid her shirt, tossing it behind her onto the bed and started undoing her pants. As she did, she said to Jack, "I'm going to take a shower. Follow me in there and I will shoot you in the face. You may be an immortal, but that doesn't mean it won't hurt." She tossed her pants on the bed and headed into the shower, closing the door behind her.
Merrill didn't mind the immortal seeing her undress, she knew he'd followed her around enough to see her like this at least once, but that didn't mean she wanted him to see her naked. She turned on the shower and removed the rest of her clothes, stepping in and letting the water hit her. She sighed and thought, "That damn immortal... always following me... such a friggin' jokester... But why do I feel so comfortable around him? It's like he's always been there, so I'm used to him being around... Like an imaginary friend or something..." Merrill simply thought about this for a while as she showered.
=====
James looked up and said, "That... was an unfortunate side effect of being a sealed demon... Sometimes the seal comes undone for a few moments and releases my locked power. Don't worry, it's nothing dangerous." James sighed and ran his hand up through his hair, blinking lightly and looking at Lyra with a frown on his face, asking, "You okay? You didn't hurt yourself, did you?" He stood up and walked over to her, offering a hand to help her up. He wanted to make sure she was okay. She didn't have to worry about him hurting her, which was the fact that bothered him the most about her not remembering him; she was afraid of him. He didn't want her to be afraid of him, he wanted her to treat him like she had when they first met; like a normal person, a friend, and so much more than that. He smiled lightly as he crouched down to be equal with her face and said, "I told you. I'm not gonna let anything happen to you. If you got hurt I... I wouldn't... I wouldn't forgive myself." James spoke softly, his words not losing their effect because of the volume of his voice.

"True, no one else ever really talks to me, but they don't interest me. Jack.. I like it" The immortal said watching her as she undressed he did not feel like telling her about the power. so he was not far he thought continuing to stare, he may have been immortal, but he was still male. Reproduction was not the primary need for his body ,being an immortal he was rarely able to reproduce any way, but one never passed up a chance to look, especially at something one could not touch. he smiled as she threatened him and moved to take her shower. he was intrigued by her, most humans he could easily read, like the demons love interest after all, she had been predictable from the start, coming to them to try and save him, and then completely forgetting the creature when jack had been asked to erase her memories.
Thinking about the time a month ago he looked back at the necklace and watched it glitter. it had been a little difficult to erase the woman's memories he did have to admit and that had been the one unpredictable part. she had taken easily to it at first, until she had seen this trinket and Jake had had no choice but to take the necklace from her and wipe her mind again. "is it typical for humans to become attached to something that isn't good for them?" he asked quite sure that Merrill could hear him. watching the pendant he thought about what to do about the demon for now, he would eventually have to tell Merrill that he had felt his presence close by, it was irritably obvious who the sudden flow of raw power came from. suddenly he let his own power flow to try and get an idea as to where exactly the demon was. ----------------------------------- Lyra watched him get closer and moved back into the wall slightly, not trusting him entirely. instinct told her that this was a man to be wary of, and she had often relied on instinct. she felt cramped in the room with him, feeling almost claustrophobic with her fear she did however note his concern written on his face and his promise. she wanted to like him, honestly wanted to believe what had happened during that week that she could not remember, but she also needed to know what happened in order to remember. "James, i want to trust you, something inside me tells me that i might need you, but I'm scared" she whispered shaking and still not touching him. she was in an unfamiliar place with a man she did not know. "I want to go outside" she whispered the entire time she did not look at him wondering herself what she would do if she did get outside.

Merrill blinked as she washed her hair when Jack spoke to her. "What kind of question is that? For being an immortal, he sure doesn't know much about humans does he?" She sighed and thought about his question for a moment before answering, "Well, in my experience, yes. It isn't that far out of the ordinary for people to be attracted to things that wouldn't be good for them..." She sighed again and finished washing her long silver hair. She decided to stay in the shower for longer than was really necessary; it had been so long since she had a good break. She closed her eyes and let the water run down her face, smiling to herself she asked, "Hey Jack... why do you follow me? I know it's because I interest you, but I mean really, there has to be other people who interest you... Why me?" Merrill had wanted to know the answer to that question for a long time, but she never seemed to get a good answer out of Jack. She wasn't quite sure how to think of him; by all accounts the imaginary friend description was accurate enough, but she was unsure of how he saw her. Object of affection? Interesting pastime? Or was she just being silly and he only saw her as someone he could pass the time with?
=====
James sighed and backed off; clearly he couldn't approach Lyra the way he wanted to, it would just be weird. He stood and walked over to the window of the motel room, looking outside for a moment before saying "Alright... you can head outside if you have to, but I'll be heading out there with you." James didn't want to scare Lyra with the fact that he just felt the release of a high level of power, very close by. He sighed to try and make himself relax, and opened the door before heading outside. The power could only have come from an immortal, and it couldn't have been such a large coincidence, that fact made James think, "That drunken immortal is around here... if he's here, that means Merrill can't be very far..." James sighed and let his power flow minimally, just enough to give the immortal a trail. He stepped out into the parking lot and walked over to the opposite side, sighing gently before he turned up the power level, giving the immortal a clear point to investigate. James snapped is fingers and the white fire appeared in his hand once again, extending out to form a rough shape of a sword before it vanished and all that was left was a large scimitar. James looked around lightly trying to see the immortal, knowing that if Merrill was around, they had a distinct advantage over him.

Lyra watched James for a moment breathing easier again as he backed off. She felt terrible doing this to him, he seemed so hurt that she could not remember, yet she wasn't sure it was possible that those feelings could have manifested in just a week could they? Slowly she got up just as he went to the door and walked outside and she followed taking in her surroundings as James continued out to the parking lot.
Jack smiled at the demons brash action as he suddenly alerted the immortal to his prescience. Risky no? he thought with a chuckle and then listened to Merrill, smiling at her response, she would know this from experience wouldn't she he thought and then frowned at her question. "Why am i so intent on following you around?" he repeated then began to laugh she did not need to know his thoughts especially when he really didnt know either. slowly he let the laugh fade to give her the idea that he had left for his own reasons and then vanished following Jame's signal before noticing another presence.
She watched him silently wondering what he was thinking and what it would be like to actually remember what had happened. With a sigh she decided to walk to the forest to clear her head. it would have been preferable to hang out at some work shop with the smell of grease and metal about, but the forest was nice to, reminding her of the times she camped with her father. thinking of her father made her think of the ring James had and slowly she pulled at the jacket that rested on her neck, feeling the ghost touch of a chain. "I don't suppose you were thinking of this were you?" Lyra gasped hearing a voice and turning to see a man aproach her dangling a necklace in his hand. "excuse me?" she said watching the gold hourglass sway back and forth on the end of the chain. James had said something about an hourglass. "ah! that could be Jame's"
"Perhaps" Jack said pulling the necklace from her reach "perhaps not, you don't seem to recall do you" he chuckled as she stepped back warily with a slightly sad look on her face, "oh dear, how terrible you cant remember anything" he tisked putting the necklace back in his pocket and approaching the girl again, this time half way dissipating while he appeared behind her and placed a hand on her shoulder, "perhaps i can help you remember the Monster you are with? he is a monster you know, all of us are, it really was for the best that we locked your memories away" he spoke into her ear.

Merrill sighed, she knew it was too much to hope for a straight answer out of Jack. Sighing, she simply went back to enjoying her shower, letting the water run down her body felt quite good. "Stupid b*****d can never just tell me, can he? Still, I really do want to know why he follows me around. If he does think of me... like that... why hasn't he made a move on me yet? Is he afraid I'll shoot him? I might shoot him for fun, but not because of something like that..." Merrill sighed again as she wondered if she had been a bit too rough with Jack, not many people liked being threatened, but she only threatened him because she knew it wouldn't really do anything to him. "I need to work on my people skills..."
=====
James felt a power level rise off to his left, towards the forest. Why wasn't The Immortal coming after him? Unless... "Lyra!" James said, more of a loud whisper than a shout. He twirled the sword and headed over to the forest where he saw Lyra last. He didn't need to get very close to hear the immortal talking. James growled and stepped out from the trees, watching the immortal as he stood behind Lyra and spoke to her, trying to trick her, if he knew the immortal as he did. "Immortal. Get away from Lyra. I'll have none of your tricks today. Just let us go, and we'll be on our way. You can follow us, and hang out with your Merrill a bit longer." James twirled his scimitar just a bit and glared at The Immortal, waiting for what he would do. He really didn't want to fight in front of Lyra, not until she trusted him again.

"Tricks? what tricks? this was merely a... er- re-acquaintance" Jack said with a slight demonic smile to his face as his hands stroked Lyra's shoulders. "Don't be such a downer, or shall i invite miss Merrill out to join us? I do know how much you guys enjoy each others company" he smiled as his eyes glared at the demon while his hands stroked Lyra's shoulders and then trailed down her arms, he wanted to provoke the demon, make him loose control and possibly loose the one he loved, he could have killed her right then and there if he wanted to, thinking this the immortals hands moved to her throat.
Lyra was temporarily paralyzed by fear as she felt the mans hands on her body, cold and dangerous, she managed to shove away from him, turning she could see the two men stare at each other, and felt the hostility between them. shaking she stepped back, then turned and ran, loosing herself in the forest, she needed space and time to think.
Jack was startled when the woman pushed him away, he had not thought that the woman would react. Humans it seemed did not work quite like he thought they would. "Looks like the play date is over" he said regaining his senses as he watched the young human disappear into the trees. then he turned and smiled at the demon, "irritating wasn't it? watching me hold her while you have barely even managed to touch her." he grinned

James glared at the immortal, watching as he put his cold hands on Lyra. James was normally always smiling, but not now. When Lyra broke away from him, James knew he should have gone after her, but the presence of the immortal made that difficult. James glared at the immortal as he spoke; it was all he could do to keep from tackling the immortal and trying to kill him. Instead, he decided to taunt him back, "Not half as irritating as it must have been to watch me suck the soul out of the demon you thought you loved. Mmmm... I remember her taste well, power-hungry, with a distinct aftertaste of greed and envy. I wonder... how would your friend Merrill taste? I bet she'd have a deliciously corrupted soul" James wasn't just making idle threats, but it wasn't as though he'd be so low as to use Merrill as a hostage. James grinned back at the immortal and started to walk after Lyra.
