Vesper sighed as Ery took to the skies, admiring the smooth movements of his wings and body as he skillfully navigated the warm updrafts of air. Flying was not one of Vesper's strong suits, hovering or gliding yes, but once she got more than a few feet off the ground she ran into trouble. Vesper had spent most of her childhood alone, wandering from meadow to meadow in the warm seasons and migrating as far south as her legs could take her before seeking shelter when the air started to chill. There had been no one around to teach her more than the basics, it had never bothered her before. In fact, this was probably the first time she had considered it for more than a moment or so. Her lack of skill was an occasional inconvenience but she spent most of her time on the ground with her friends, the flowers, anyways.
She watched as Erynion steadily gained the lead, "Oh well, nothing to it." she muttered determinedly, sticking her tongue out of the side of her mouth and wiggling her hindquarters back and forth a couple of times for good measure before leaping into the air. Her raven hair streamed behind her in a pennant as she gathered speed. She kicked her legs beneath her a bit as though she were swimming as she flapped her wings and a childlike delight lit up her features. This was a lot more fun than it looked! A lot harder too, Vesper wobbled and bobbed through the air, dropping a few feet every yard or so when she'd get distracted and forget to flutter her wings and then flapping them furiously to regain height.
A strong wind proved to be her undoing, it caught her wings at an awkward angle and sent her cartwheeling through the air, thankfully, a clump of thick bushes broke her fall. Vesper sat in them for a moment, dazed, before poking her head out of the leaves and chuckling, "I'm alright Erynion!" she called out whimsically, "I'll be along, Once I-" she tugged one leg free with a little grunt and set it on the ground, "Once I get this silly bush off of me, that is!"

Erynion looped around, when he noticed Vesper wasn't beside him, just in time to see her tumble to the ground. He rushed over to her, landing gently next to her. "Are you okay? That was a bit of a gust of wind. I shouldn't have flown off, I'm sorry."
He circled around, checking her over to make sure nothing was broken. "Ah! He exclaimed with a gasp. "You've got a scratch on your leg."
Ery frowned, a worried look across his face. She seemed to have trouble flying in strong winds and it was a windy day today. "Here, stand up if you can and we'll fly together. I'll stick close to you and keep you up. I promise I won't let you fall again."
His eyes darted to the scratch on her leg. "We'll get that fixed up when we get there."
If it wasn't for the fact that she'd been hurt because he'd been careless, this would be the perfect moment. Flying closely together, him protecting her. Ery inwardly smiled. I might suggest flying on windy days more often. If I see her again, that is. He almost sighed at the thought of not seeing her. He didn't think he could go a day. This beautiful flower. He wanted her around forever.

Vesper shook her head, laughing breathlessly as he drew near, "It's not your fault," she reassured him hurriedly as she freed another slender leg from the bushes' leafy grasp. She hopped foreword a little, tugging and wriggling until her back legs were free and she stood before her new friend, panting, with leaves and small twigs tangled in her hair, but victorious.
She turned her head with Ery as he circled her and as he moved past the limit of her neck's ability to rotate, she stepped hoof over hoof to twirl around after him. At his concern, she glanced down and saw the stain of crimson smeared across her leg, bright against her white coat. It stung a bit with each movement, making her wince but she refused to let it drag her down for long, she wouldn't let it bother her.
Vesper nodded at Ery's suggestion and stepped foreword until she was snug against his side, feeling the now familiar thrill of electricity as they brushed against each other. "If you say so," she agreed, "I trust you." she blinked a couple times at the words, but they felt natural, and true. She knew Erynion would help her, so she screwed up her face and leaped into the air again, this time with Ery close by to keep her company. She still wove and bobbed through the air a bit drunkenly, but she managed to keep the majority of her attention on the task at hand. It helped that Erynion was near her, she found herself gazing at him more often than not rather than the ground they passed over.
"What do you do in your garden?" Vesper wondered aloud after a few minutes of comfortable silence, "Its sounds lovely, but what made you want to do it in the first place?"

Erynion's whole body exploded with warmth when Vesper snuggled against him. A blush crept all over his face, threatening to spread. He took a few deep breaths, calming himself before taking off into the sky, making sure to stick close to Vesper and shield her from the wind.
He constantly gazed down at her, relishing the enjoyment and happiness she displayed around him. This was honestly perfection. "Mostly I just plant. Sometimes I have visitors but it's mostly me by myself. I talk to the flowers and the butterflies." He laughed lightly. "That probably sounds a bit silly, but it's peaceful." He grinned. "And it smells great."
They landed safely on the outskirts of the garden and Ery looked Vesper over, making sure she was okay. "Oh, you've still got a stick in your hair." He leaned forward and gently pulled it from her hair with his mouth, dropping it on the ground. "There. Perfect."
Opening his satchel, Ery pulled out a small tube of cream and rubbed some on Vesper's cut. "I get into fight with roses a lot. This stuff will stop any infections and help with the pain a bit."
Turning away awkwardly, he attempted to hide the blush and cleared his throat. "Now then, let me show you around." Ery walked ahead to a small gate and opened it, stepping inside.
The garden was quite large, considering he called it a garden. There was an array of flowers spread out over a deliciously green field. A small pond splashed with active koi fish playing. The garden was bordered by two lakes, the banks of which were lined with various aquatic plants. Large trees sprouted up, providing shade and shelter for birds and other various creatures. The air was clean, fresh and alive with the sound of flittering wings as hundreds of butterflies danced around.
"It's even more beautiful at night, if you're still here," Ery said with a smile. He was proud of his creation and he loved it with all his heart.

Vesper's face was quite serious as she listened to Ery describe his home and routines. A smile lit up her face when she heard about the flowers and butterflies. "They like it when you talk to them, you know, the flowers." she confided excitedly, "It makes them happy, so they grow better!" She watched the way Erynion moved his wings surreptitiously with little peeks over his shoulders and over time was able to emulate some of his skill. At least enough to avoid crashing again, although now that she thought of it, the crashing had been pretty fun. She might want to try it again at a later date, perhaps when Ery wasn't around to be worried so. The thought tugged at her heartstrings, she didn't want to contemplate a day when he wouldn't be nearby.
Vesper did a little victory dance as they landed, prancing around the stallion a couple of times before stopping in front of him again. She laughed softly as Ery tugged the twig from her hair and smoothed his own pearly locks gently with her nose, more for the comfort of his nearness than to neaten it as she pretended. "Perfect," she repeated softly as she pulled back, meeting his eyes for a breathless moment before turning to gaze at the garden.
She experienced an overwhelming feeling of rightness as her eyes wandered up and down beaten dirt paths and drank in the colorful beds of flowers and the jewel like butterflies gliding through the heavily perfumed air. It felt like home, she felt a longing for this place that was only secondary to her yearning for the stallion at her side. She glanced at him sidelong, her eyes uncharacteristically solemn as she tilted her head to hold his eyes with her own.
He leaned down to rub a soothing balm on the scratch on her leg, cooling the fire and making her close her eyes with relief. "Thank you, Its wonderful." the corners of Vesper's mouth twitched at the mental image of Erynion fighting with roses, she would like to see that. She remembered what he had said on their flight her, 'I don't get many visitors.' Vesper couldn't imagine why but there was a simple way to fix that... She opened her mouth to say so but suddenly felt uncharacteristically shy. Her mouth snapped shut and she simply followed Ery into the garden. "I'd like that." Vesper responded sincerely, her eyes wide as she drank in the sights before her, looking foreword to introducing herself to Erynion's flowers. "Ery, did you do this all by yourself?" she wondered aloud, awed in spite of herself.

Erynion watched as she took in the garden, mesmerized by her child-like awe. Mesmerized by her existence. Mesmerized by the fact that she was here with him. He took in all of her and all that surrounded her, capturing the moment as a memory that would last forever. A memory he would cherish forever, regardless of what happened.
He looked at his flowers and grinned. They really were happy to have a visitor and were on their best display today. Petals folding out perfectly, colours brighter than ever and their best fragrances filling the air. Even the butterflies seemed to move with more grace, almost dancing.
Ery nodded in response to his question. "Yeah. I started when I was very young. The trees were already here, luckily. I don't think I could wait for them to grow. I'm too impatient." He chuckled.
Looking into the distance, he eyed the horizon. The sun was steadily beginning to set, butterflies slowly retreating to the trees for their night's rest. "Ah. Here we go."
Slowly, but surely, the garden changed. Tiny lanterns flickered in the trees, lit by a flame that glowed in different hues. Fireflies emerged from unknown locations, replacing the butterflies and spreading their own light. Flowers closed to sleep and other bloomed, glowing with soft iridescence. "This is my favourite. All these flowers bloom at night and most of them glow.
Buzzing sounded around Ery's ears and he frowned lightly. "Unfortunately with night comes more mosquitoes. Shall we retreat inside? He moved his head, directing her attention to the largest tree in the garden, a small house built on its branches.

Vesper's eyes were wide and she gasped with delight as they watched the garden's seemingly miraculous transformation. She couldn't help it, hovering so as not to trod on any of the other plants, she ventured closer to one of the glowing blossoms and nosed it gently, her eyes tracing each petal and leaf with fascination. "Hello, beautiful," she breathed adoringly, "I've never met anyone like you before." Indeed, Vesper was terrified of the dark, a fear that stemmed from her childhood, memories to clouded to recall correctly although she did get the impression of teeth. Long sharp teeth, like daggers, prowling and snapping through the darkness. It wasn't safe, a shiver ran down her spine, this was the first time she'd stayed out past dark in ages... But it was hard to feel afraid in this place. The lanterns and fireflies provided plenty of light to see by and the gentle jewel-like glow of the night blooming flowers was beautiful enough to chase away her fear, at least for the moment. And then there was Erynion, she knew she would be safe with him around.
She returned to him and snuggled up against his side as they walked, the nights were growing chillier. "I never thought to grow flowers," she mused aloud, "I'm not sure I could, I love spending time with them though. They make me happy, and they like the attention. Flowers are so easy to please."
Vesper heartily agreed, wincing as one of the pesky little bugs left an itchy bite at the end of her nose. She followed Erynion down the path and gasped yet again at the sight of Ery's home, the tree must have been ancient to have grown so big. "Is this where you live?"
The small cottage nestled within its branches looked cozy, warm and inviting, "How is that even possible?" she asked, awed, "Did you fly that house up there Erynion? It must have been awfully heavy!"
She gazed at him with undisguised admiration, "Your home is so beautiful. I've never seen anything like it!" She peered around with mock suspicion, "Are you sure you live here by yourself?" her silvery laughter was pure and innocent but there was a hint of a flirtatious smolder to the sidelong glance she directed at him. "It must keep you busy."

Erynion chuckled in amusement as Vesper fluttered to the flowers, nosing them gently. She had a child like innocence about her, something that shouldn't be tainted. Ery had the urge to protect her, at all costs and from whatever threatened to taint her. He stiffened, suddenly aware of how delicate she was. The smallest thing could break her, take her away from him.
Shaking his head slightly, he banished such thoughts from his head. He was thinking like a mad man. She wasn't even his. A chill ran down his spine and he shivered as she snuggled against him. He loved that she was so comfortable around him. She felt home, snuggled against his side. Everything about it felt right.
Keeping her against his side, he lifted into the air, landing softly on a balcony. He laughed. "I wish it was that easy. It took a while to build. I had some help, of course. I think it was worth it in the end." He turned and looked at her, staring into those beautiful eyes. "I promise we're totally alone."
He stared for a few moments before a blush crept onto his face and he cleared his throat, turning away. "Well then, let's go inside." Ery opened the door and stepped inside. The house was bare, a few paintings on the wall and a small area with cushions on the floor. Flowers in pots were scattered about and more of those magical lanterns hung from the roof, only these ones stayed golden. "It's a little empty. But it's only me so I haven't had much need for anything else. Maybe one day I can add more. Normally I sleep in the garden unless it's cold or the mosquitoes are overly hungry."

Vesper eyes the floor boards dubiously but they didn't shake or wriggle when she put her full weight on them so she assumed they were solid enough. She pranced around the main room a couple times, her hooves tap tapping across the floor in a little dance as she eagerly examined the paintings and greeted the potted flowers politely. She was baffled by the structure of this place, the only place she'd ever slept with a solid roof over her head was in a cave. She didn't like cave's very much, they were damp and smelly and dark. Not ideal places for a flutter who thrived in nature and the sunlight. But this place was bright and comfortable, even though it was indoors, Ery had found ways to bring the beauty of the garden into his home and the air was still heavily perfumed from the flowers below. She inhaled deeply and sighed, enjoying this moment of perfect happiness.
It was then that she realized she truly was completely alone with Erynion. Despite the fact that they had spent the entire day in each others' company, it felt somehow different up here, more private. She blushed and ducked her head. Erynion was important, that much was very clear to her. She didn't want to think about what she'd do if she ever lost him, it was probably irrational to feel this way after such a short time, but there was no denying the truth of the feelings that were welling up inside of her.
Vesper stepped closer, feeling her heart flutter at his nearness, "I wish it could always be like this. Just us." she tilted her head back to look up at him, her heart in her eyes. "I'm glad I met you, Erynion."

Erynion smirked as he watched Vesper step inside and prance around. Instantly his house livened up, the flowers beaming with joy to have company. The sound of her hooves tip-tapping on the wooden floors was so comforting - he wanted to hear it forever. He blushed and grinned at the thought of Vesper staying here with him. Could it happen? Was she starting to feel the same way about him as he was about her? At first the feelings were strange, they'd hit him when he first laid eyes on her. He thought it was excitement over meeting a new friends. But the excitement never passed and the feelings only grew stronger. It wasn't until now, thinking of a future with her and looking at her so.. comfortable in his home that he realised those feelings were love.
He watched her cautiously as she stepped closer, eyes peeing into hers with as much emotion. His heart soared like a bird free from a cage when he heard those words slip from her mouth. He leaned down and nuzzled her, ever so gently, a small kiss upon her cheek before he moved to her ear to whisper. "I'm glad I met you, too, Vesper. I wish you could stay here forever. You've given my home more life than anything I could ever plant. More beauty than any flower and more grace than any butterfly." He looked at her again. "You belong here, Vesper. This is your home, too, should you wish it."

The strange tumble of emotions inside her seemed to settle into place at Erynion's words. She could stay! Spend her days wandering among the flower beds in this paradise with Ery, the warmth that had been steadily growing within her banked and then flared into a joyous blaze as she realized the implications of his words. "I'll stay with you." She gazed deep into the eyes of the stallion that filled her heart, warmth, affection in her voice, and deeper, the promise of heat. Simmering between them. "I love you Erynion. As long as you desire my company, I'll be here." The words flew out of her mouth before she could put thought into them, but there they were. She knew she had spoken the truth with every fiber of their being, so despite the deep blush that suddenly mantled her cheeks, she didn't take them back.
Vesper was childlike, vivacious, and often naive but deep down, there was a lucid and almost logical piece of her that bubbled to the surface in moments like these. Life changing events, perilous circumstances, moments that were too important to be approached with silliness and whimsy. The Vesper who met Erynion's gaze was fully aware of what she was offering him. Her whole heart, the rest of her life, all his if he wanted them. This Vesper understood the simultaneous beauty and vulnerability of the innocence and frivolity that dominated her existence. Early in life, after the crisis that destroyed her family, Vesper had had to make a choice. Her maturity or her sanity. She had chosen the latter and retreated into the safety and simplicity of childhood. This small piece of her former self remained to guide her through the darkness in her life without it destroying her and to help her find a true happiness that may one day make it safe for her to open the door to memories long abandoned.
She would need to admit all of this someday, but now wasn't the right time. She didn't want to cloud the joy of the moment. Once she was sure of Erynion's feelings she wouldn't remember this internal dialogue at all. She wasn't sure what relationship she shared with Ery. Surely they had moved passed simple friendship. Lovers perhaps? Something more? But how to phrase it?
"Ery..." She began thoughtfully, "Friends live together right? But.... It's more than that isn't it?"

Time froze around Erynion. For that moment, when those words escaped Vesper's lips nothing else existed except her. The world could be ending around him and he would not notice - nor would he care as long as he had her. And he would. He knew it for sure, now. Any doubts that may have crept through him, pressing on his heart like a weight lifted, allowing his heart to soar as if it had wings. A blush crept up on his cheeks - from happiness rather than embarrassment.
Erynion leaned down and nuzzled his cheek against Vesper's once more, though this time it held more emotion, breathing in her scent, feeling the warmth and softness of her skin. He kissed her cheek ever so lightly. "It is more, Vesper. I would have you stay with me forever, because that's how long I desire your company. I love you, Vesper. This is our home, now. Ours."

Vesper sighed happily, a silly grin lighting her features as she gazed deeply into the eyes of the stallion who had captured her heart. "What a marvelous thing!" she murmured with dreamy contentment, "A new love, a new home, and a beautiful future... All in the same day!"
