i had a habit of running off when my parents turned around because i always wanted to play hide and seek, after losing me in department stores a few times they got a leash for me. i cant blame them and ill probably do the same for my future kids if they are anything like i was

I think they were more common in the 80s because myself and my oldest brother both had one until we were old enough to understand the strangers are bad concept. But after giving them away between my brother and sister mom couldn't find them anymore. Ours were basically straps that went around our wrist with velcro

My mom kept me on one and it was like that, which kinda defeats the purpose because I remember undoing the velcro.

I was talking to mum, apparently the one she had for us fastened with velcro and then wrapped around to a buckle type thing, she said the combo of the two gave her enough time to realize we were unfastening it. lol

That's mum, she's nothing if not smart and overprotective.

cєℓєsтιαℓ ғιʀєғℓιєs:

I don't see anything wrong with it if it's used properly, as a tool to keep them safe, not so you can do what you'd like without having to bother watching your toddler. My brother used to be a big runner, and he hated being restricted to sitting in a stroller, so my parents used a harness with him when we went certain places.

He could still hold their hand when he wanted, but he could also explore about a 3ft radius without my parents having to worry about him getting away and bolting off. My brother could outrun them, so once he decided to go, he could easily turn two corners and disappear. The harness kept him from doing that, and they stopped when he learned boundaries and listening skills.

Wouldn't you know it, he's a lot more independent than me (I never needed a harness), and doesn't have any fears going places or finding his way on his own.

Wow, that's proof right there that leashes do not prevent children from being self aware and independent. 3nodding
I wish my parents had me on leash, it would have prevented my mom from having a panic attack. :c

I loved to do that, I also like to go to the garden section where there's a lot of plants and pretend that I'm in the jungle. xD

A child doesn't need to be on a leash always, but dang, in some situations it is a really good idea. Like on busy days at the zoo. A parent probably can't take their eyes off of their child for even a second. No fun for them at all : (

I still do both of those things. Well mostly in the garden section I pretend I'm in Jurassic Park.

If I wasn't riding in the cart, I would run off in department stores too. I'd hide in the clothing racks. But if I would come out and didn't see my mom anymore, I'd go to the front desk and they would call her over the intercom.
I was a smart child.
My mom never put a leash on me. When I would hide, I would usually do it nearby and I'd usually stay within vision of my mom, and if she couldn't see me, I usually could see her.

And half the time, in incidents where I would throw a tantrum in the store, my parents would tell me that they were leaving me there and then walk away. They knew I'd run after them every time. Slightly tramatic, but it worked better than trying to compromise with me.

I've got no problem with leashing a child. I never needed one, but both of my siblings did. My brother would just wander off and my sister would go up to strangers and ask to be picked up. Keeping them on leashes kept them safe. When/if I have kids and they're anything like my siblings you bet I'm going to leash them. It gives children the oppurtunity to explore while keeping them safe.

o.o I actually dont do that XD but,I suppose its cause Im busy looking at the purdy flowers :3 my grandparents own this house, that they started renting to my aunt and uncle (which now is in the possession of my cousin because my uncle died and my aunt moved) and when my grandparents lived there,it was so epic, they had the back yard full of rhododendrons, and a small path, and you could go and play in the rhodies,it was like a jungle biggrin but my aunt had them torn out emo
