He had a nice smile, he should probably have made use of it more frequently but the stallion appeared to be relatively reserved in that respect. Whether it be a simple preference for a more serious outlook on life, or a determination to be guarded, smiles may not have been very forthcoming for the stallion. Still, it didn't stop the masked mare from appreciating the very brief show and she allowed her own smile to deepen in return - evidently, he had been a touch uncomfortable up until this point.

Ah! What wonderful things good manners and hospitality were - with just enough encouragement he had relaxed and she had been graced with a very pleasant show indeed. While he was definitely a novelty for the time being, there was nothing to say that he wouldn't be welcomed as a more frequent feature in her life. That was to say, she certainly didn't think there would be objections with the stallion coming to and fro to visit for polite conversation now and again, or to partake in whatever meals her humans might provide (they had a habit of giving her too much).

She was no fool, she wouldn't assume anymore than that.

"To 'not be a burden' you mean," she corrected him with a wry smile. "To be unburdening implies you would saddle me with your troubles -" she paused and shook her head. "That doesn't mean I'm not willing to listen, but they mean two different things," she pointed out gently and tilted her head to the side. She understood the rest of what he was meant, but she'd held little doubt before now that he could care for himself - all of the Kawani soquili seemed capable of it.

"But yes, your name is the french form of eh..." she took a moment to think and then continued, "William," she spoke the english name though she was unable to shift her accent and it was clear the two names were related from that alone. "It is a nice name, pleasant on the ears," she added with a small nod. "I have lived here for many years though - six now, I think?" she shook her head as she'd already grown used to the days all rolling in to one.

"But if you have no been here long, then where have you been if you do not mind the query? It seems all but myself are intrepid explorers, no?"

A touch uncomfortable...had Guiliaume realized that he was regarded as such, he would have been quite chagrined; while it was true that he didn't care for socialization, he had always retained some degree of confidence in the fact that he was acquitting himself with proper decorum and respect. Unlike Soquili that were truly socially awkward, Guiliaume had long since lost any sense of shyness or unease; any perceived discomfort on his part came entirely from his strong dislike of putting himself forward or being disobliging. Ironic, really, how it was a desire NOT to be awkward that created the awkwardness!

Fortunately Aziza was not the sort of mare to remark on such things; while there were many in possession of good humor and kindness, those traits were often combined with a light-hearted, jesting nature that could easily result in bringing pain without realizing it by remarking, even teasingly, on the awkwardness or discomfort of another. To the speaker, it might be a joke and nothing to be ashamed of, but to the target it could be unknown information and enough to truly mortify their spirits. Guiliaume didn't regard himself as so easily discomforted, but that didn't mean that he would enjoy such jests!

But as she had kept her opinion on that score to herself, there was no need for Guiliaume to be upset, either in reality or his imagination. Instead, he was able to focus on the details of this conversation and taking advantage of her instruction! "To not be a burden; yes, this is what I should be speeching." After all, just because she was willing to listen didn't mean it would be at all acceptable to pour out the details of his life to what was a very new acquaintance; besides, as far as he was concerned he had no real troubles to report. His life hadn't been sunshine and roses, but it had taught him self-sufficiency and proved to himself that he was able to follow-through on a goal! "I am not wanting to be a burden, that is it." A small success, but a success nonetheless.

Her information on his name was interesting, and he wondered if his mother had been aware of this fact or had just picked it because of the similarity to his father's. As he looked so identical to his father even at birth, it had been logical on the part of a very uncreative mare to give him a nearly identical name; indeed, it wouldn't have been unfathomable for him to have been dubbed 'Guilian Junior!' Still, he was glad for the slight differentiation, and had always been quietly partial to his name. "Thank you...and I am very impressed. I don't think that I have been anywhere even close to six years; this region has been my home for less than a year, and prior to that I have been doing much travel for years. Not exactly...exploring, but looking. My father, he was gone before I was born, and I wanted to know him, and not knowing where or how to find him, I traveled." A very understated description of the actual events, but between his lack of language skills and his own generally self-deprecating manner, it was about as dramatic a tale as he was likely to offer on his own!

"'Saying', not 'speeching'," she corrected him again, picking up on one of his more common errors. There were always going to be words that he wouldn't naturally shift and change himself, if she was going to help him regain what he had lost then she would target those rather than every tiny little thing. Once she had nipped those in the bud, she could set about adjusting his grammer as well - baby steps as it was, she couldn't throw every lesson at him at once or she would risk him forgetting everything. After all, it was through practice that an individual picked these sort of things up rather than simply being told.

As she listened to the rest of what he had to say, her human picked up the remainder of her things and sauntered off, finally leaving Aziza and her new friend to themselves. Not that it would have made much of a difference as the mare seemed to have stopped paying attention to her owner the moment the red stallion had entered the compound. Suffice to say the human didn't blame her, he was a curious sort to be sure.

"I really don't consider staying at home to be very impressive," she replied modestly, a mild and perhaps sheepish smile lining her lips. She was far from the adventurous sort and had remained in this compound from the moment she had arrived. Saved for a rare few encounters with outside soquili, she hadn't had much to do with this new world. In fact, her entire reason for being here was down to the fact that she had come in the company of her bonded humans, if they hadn't come then neither would she. "I am not an avid explorer like yourself," she pointed out and then shook her head. "I cannot speak the language, the world is very hostile when you cannot ask questions," she explained.

She elected to switch the subject at this point, she really didn't need sympathy for her plight as her lot in life really wasn't that bad.

"Am I to assume you have had success in relocating your father?" she enquired with a tilt of her head. "Or does the search still continue? I would like to think you have seen many things in your travel, the world is a very unusual place..."

"Saying," Guilliaume repeated obediently. It sounded familiar and rolled off the tongue, though he couldn't quite recall saying it much previously himself. "Saying," he repeated again, then cocked his head to one side as he asked, "Is 'speeching' close to 'saying,' or am I very far from the correctness?" If he was going to learn the right way to say things, he also wanted to know why what he was saying incorrectly was wrong. Having a somewhat focused personality, Guiliaume had always given his all in terms of attention and dedication to whatever he was doing. For the past few years, that had been finding his father; at the moment, it was a much smaller mission, but one that gained just as much attention.

It was a trait that Guiliaume shared with a few other family members, this dedication to detail. It manifested in different ways for different Soquili; for his brother Louie, it was in the practiced art of apathy and driving others crazy; for his brother Leon, it was finding out the innermost workings of the hearts of those he cared about so he could always cheer them up. Guiliaume didn't have one defining 'trait' like his younger brothers, no one skill or passion that he could devote all of his energy and focus towards, but he was just as capable at sticking to his guns!

He glanced after the human momentarily as she left, but it was more out of attention to the movement than anything. Being silent and unobtrusive, she had barely registered after his initial arrival. Then again, what chance did a human have against a mare wearing clothes and speaking the language he wanted to learn? But he did grace her retreat with a glance before turning back to Aziza, smiling as he commented, "Having a place to be that is home, that is something...special. When I was young I would have given muchly things to have a home." Another understatement, and if she was afraid of sympathy then she was looking at the wrong stallion. What reason did he has to offer her sympathy when she seemed so content?

But he was able to smile himself as he answered her question (or at least the part of it he understood). "Yes, last year I found him, and he has been very welcoming and kindly. But when you are used to searching and moving, it can be...hard to no longer have purpose." There was no bid for sympathy or plea for attention in Guiliaume's voice, merely simple statement of fact, and he followed it up with a shrug. "I have seen much, but much of it I have no wish to see again. The rest of it, I don't know." He paused, considering his words very carefully and speaking even more slowly in an attempt to be correct. "I just need to make...alterations in how I work with things. I am tired of being a...wanderer."

"Speeching is similar," Aziza confirmed and then paused. Her mind seemed to dirft off for a moment as if she was consulting some sort of internal dictionary. It wasn't intended to make her companion feel uncomfortable, but rather than spout nonsense, she much preferred to make sure her responses were accurate. Having concluded that she was correct in what she had said, she soon returned to the present again and her smile returned to her lips. "A slightly different context, but the words are similar in a sense," she clarified before continuing. "And 'from the mark' sounds much better than 'correctness', though again, they are similar," she concluded.

Unaware of his quirks and love for attention to detail, she thought nothing of it. To her, the stallion was nothing more than studious with a vested interest in developing his understanding of the language. Alternatively, she could simply regard him as one who had an interest in touching up already existing skills. Foals were just as inquisitive, if not more so and as a consequence it wasn't all that much of an oddity. In fact, the mare could be thankful for small favours, any question he asked was typically relevant and didn't leave her with a brank expression and absolutely no feasible (or suitable) way to answer.

...Yes, she'd had a few interesting questions in her time.

However, her inner musings were not given the opportunity to manifest any further and her gaze lifted abruptly. What he had said was puzzling and for a moment she had to recount his words in the hopes of spotting some flaw in his linguistic choices. Finding none, she furrowed her brow beneath her mask before shaking her head, perhaps she had misunderstood, or there was something more to what he said that she was missing. "I would have thought that your mother's lands would have been regarded as a home," she mused, perhaps inappropriately. Alas, she didn't dwell on this and there didn't seem to be sympathy in her tone, more so than mild interest.

"Regardless, I am glad that you have relocated your father," she offered with a small nod. Her forelock tumbled into her eyes briefly and she spent a moment or two snorting it out of her line of sight - not the most dignified of actions but it was better than a rude head toss. "However, I don't think you are accurate when you say you have no purpose - you are tired of wandering and you have located your family. In a roundabout sense, does this not mean your immediate 'purpose' is to gain a knowledge of your current family and it's inner workings? To delve into what you do and don't know, to investigate the more hidden aspects and elements of life in their midst?"

She pursed her lips.

"There is much you can do without seeing the world, it is simply a case of spotting what is right in front of you, no?"
PostPosted: Sat Jun 04, 2011 9:36 am

Once again, a few of Aziza's words went over Guiliaume's head and he had to clarify, "What is 'context', please?" It was in circumstances like these that a notebook and pencil would be useful, if those this actually existed in the Kawani lands...and he had hands. It was a bit silly to ask for the meanings of words that likely wouldn't come up in basic conversation, but Guiliaume was nothing if not thorough and refused to smile and nod when he had no idea what was actually being said. That was unhelpful to him, disrespectful to Aziza, and misleading in general as it lead to the potential for those words to be repeated without him actually understanding what they meant!

Though he did understand 'similar', and could consequently rest assured that he had not said something improper or unrelated to what he'd meant to say! His uprightness in comparison to his parents' laxity was odd in some respects, but as a reflexive trait it was far from uncommon. Aziza, it seemed though, was unfamiliar with that concept from her question/statement about his mother's lands being his home, and while he responded with a slight bow, it was with an overly formal and dismissive tone that he replied, "Perhaps that is being the common way, but I found no happiness there. Having a...goal was the greatest happiness I could ever have wanted, until I achieved it."

He was thoughtful as he considered her suggestion regarding his current mission, the reserve that accompanied his thoughts of his former life dropping to briefly show the more relaxed and easy Guiliaume that had appeared once or twice so far this conversation as he finally smiled in an almost rueful way. I would say that you are correct, and that is actually what I have been doings for some time, ever since I met up with my father. Yet..." He paused, as much to figure how to say the next thing as to how to phrase it to not come off as disrespectful to the father and family that had been so welcoming to him. "Well I began my search, I small knew how large my family would be. Before, I had no one; now, I have everyones, and it overwhelms."

"Context..." she paused to consider the most appropriate way to explain this. It was in moments like this that some might argue she would have made for a fantastic school teacher. A shame that such a valuable skill went to waste, as her grasp of her own language was admirable. Alas, with an inability to converse to those in the Kawani lands, it made any promotion of such a talent completely impossible. It was just one of those 'things', it would have been lovely to have the option but sometimes what you wanted wasn't always a reasonable desire.

"Context is the type of situation you find yourself in - if you say 'it depends on the context', it means that you are saying the meaning of a particular word or saying, depends on the situation you are in and who is present," she explained at last. It was as accurate as she could put it, a series of sentences to explain one word that would ultimately convey that all in a fragment of the time. She felt a bit like a dictionary, however this wasn't necessarily a bad thing, for a start, she had someone who actually cared and took an interest in the issues he raised!

Explanation aside, she turned her interests towards his polite dismissal of his mother (evidently an awkward subject) and his apparent fondness for his father. Whoever Guliaume's father was, he was grateful to have him, even if he was subjected to a culture shock upon arrival and the realisation that he was swamped by his own relatives. She couldn't relate, her family was notably small, but she could at least imagine how it might feel.

...Terrifying, for a start, since they probably wouldn't speak her language.

"You can always try for baby steps," she murmured encouragingly and chuckled. "I am sure you are a novelty for them as well; you are entitled to take a few breaks here and there to mull over the details of who you have met so far," she continjued and shook her head. "No one would expect you to memerise everyone's name in one go but it is with that in mind that you cannot say you are without goals are purpose - methinks that will last for quite some time until you are familiar with your companions, no?"
PostPosted: Fri Jun 17, 2011 9:03 am

Ok, in retrospect asking for a definition had been a bad idea. He should have remembered that definitions themselves could often involve unknown words or complicated thoughts, and the definition of 'context' displayed those characteristics in spades. He caught a few words here and there, but the bulk of the explanation went right over his head, leaving him a touch regretful that he'd put her to all that trouble for nothing! "I am sorry...I am not knowing enough yet to understands. We will have to return again later to this, when I am knowing more!" After all, one needed to walk before they began to run!

But conversation would be a good way to attain that, and he had to appreciate that she was keeping the topics on such general subject. After all, words for families and emotions were among the most basic learned by anyone! And he could also appreciate her allowing him to steer the conversation away from distasteful subjects; unfortunately, there were many who wouldn't pay attention to non-verbal clues and would keep barreling ahead without realizing how distasteful their actions were to others.

He smiled at her analysis of his familial situation, giving her a slight nod. "We are thinking the same; I am trying to meet people slowly, which should not be a problem for long, as they do not all live nearby each others. But I am something new, and my story interests. The names and faces are not a trouble for me, as I am good with...details; it is just the numbers!" He sighed here, shrugging his shoulders at the mare. "It is a hardest thing, going from being alone to being in a crowd."

She couldn't sympathise, empathise or even begin to imagine the position he was in. From a personal stand point, the masked mare had always regarded the opportunity to be surrounded by friends, family or even a large crowd to be a wonderful thing. She had experienced large crowds and families before but this had been years ago, a nod towards her homeland. Ever since the mare had arrived here she had been subject to isolation on a more permanent level - one could even have been so bold as to say their situations were reversed... She had gone from being part of a crowd, to existing on her own!

"Aha!" she chuckled and shook her head, casting aside her thoughts for a time being. Suffice to say that it was better not to dwell on what she had lost or her current state of affairs. No one needed to know the woes of a stranger and she would be the first to indicate her exasperation towards anyone who whined about their circumstances - in fact, she would be the sort to tell them to fix it.

"Well, it is in this that we differ," she confessed with a wry smile, tilting her head to the side as she regarded the stallion. "I am terrible with names, you need to tell me at least six times before I remember it," she mused. Her expression became a touch sheepish, though this might have been difficult to detect beneath her mask if it hadn't been for her already present smile. "And even then, give it six months of absence and I will still forget your name! It makes for some very awkward conversations," she added.

"But I suppose coming from a stance that you have nothing, it would be very overwhelming to be the subject of interest for many others," she popped her lips as she considered what it might be like, unsurprisingly, she struggled to step into the male's shoes. "That being said, if there intentions are pure and they are simply curious then you could take you're own enjoyment from each encounter - it is always fun to watch others, even up close..."

"I am sure they have many quirks and oddities, no?"
PostPosted: Sun Jul 17, 2011 10:16 am

Words had never been a problem for Guiliaume. He had been able to speak properly starting from a very young age, with minimal 'baby talk' even with a mother who rarely had time for him. Learning names was just another form of learning words, and for a stallion who could pick up on different languages with relative ease, remembering the names of those he met was hardly a chore. Over the course of his journeying he'd met up with numerous Soquili, and could name them all in his head even now. Whether he'd see any of them again was doubtful, but if he did, he'd at least know their names!

It was interesting, just how different Soquili could be from one another. He smiled in response to Aziza's confession about her own difficulties with names; he could very well suppose that in certain situations, that would be a greater problem than being socially insecure. There were a great many failings that could be overlooked when they were accompanied by a personalized greeting or apology (as the case might be).

"Yes, there certainly are things that I find unique about my relations, and I look forward to getting to know them in time." The last two words were stressed very slightly, just enough for anyone within earshot to get his point. It wasn't that he disliked his family, or found anything untoward in their interest, it was just a case of too much, too soon. And he hadn't even met some of his siblings, that was the real kicker. He'd been overwhelmed by little more than half the group!

"I am sure that it will be a beneficial experience for me, once I have acclimated to all of the differences. But going from being a nomad to being settled, from having no family to family everywhere...it is all a lots for me to accepting at once. Having addressed that, though, he was more than ready to let that subject pass for the time being. Much as he appreciated any interest, he was not currently in want of advice and was beginning to feel claustrophobic on the subject. Instead, he steered the conversation back to her. "Do you enjoy living amongst so many of the...humans?"

For the time being the mare allowed the conversation to shift back to her; it would provide Guiliuame with a brief moment of respite. In the period that the attention was on her, he could mostly likely muse over the previous discussion and any new words he might have learnt. Admittedly, the mare had no intention of allowing all the topics to revolve around her as there was a limit to the interesting conversation she could supply - trials of a sheltered soul as it were...

"I have no immediate concerns or complaints," she replied without missing a beat, a small smiling lining her lips as she turned her gaze towards the barn she called home, and the blacksmith who walked in and out of it at regular intervals. Admittedly, she wasn't always aware of what he was up to but every now and then he had come in to her - as a foal she had found this very peculiar, but as an adult she rather enjoyed it. Every time he came to say hello he would file her hooves and give her new shoes.

Shiny shoes!

"Sometimes their customs and hobbies are very bizarre," she confessed and shook her head, pausing momentarily to regain her train of thought. "For example, they like to dress animals in most unusual things, last week our neighbour dressed up his dog as a sailor," she explained. Granted, Aziza was a prime example of this herself, but she rarely put up a fuss... It gave her the colour she generally lacked - as beneath the coloured cloth, lay only white fur. It was hardly spectacular and she was rather fond of the cloth for providing additional cover against the brisk coastal breeze as well.

"Admittedly, they don't understand me and I sometimes miss proper conversation, but they do mean well and I can't fault them for it," she concluded softly. It was at this point that she returned her attention to Guiliaume and tilted her head to one side, with his curiosity satisfied for a brief period, she elected to very briefly bring the conversation back to him - as a mare without family, those type of units sometimes intrigued her.

"But how are your family unique? Am I assuming they are characters that are laws unto themselves...?"
PostPosted: Thu Nov 03, 2011 3:29 pm

Guiliaume had to chuckle internally at his own shortsightedness. When they had been talking of him, he had been able to stick largely with terms that he understood or could at least guess at. From Aziza's self-deprecating air, it had been logical to assume that her story would follow a similar vein and he would be able to understand; instead, he was faced in rapid order with terms like 'dress' and 'sailor' and 'dog', none of which had come up for him before. Worse still, the statement itself was so peculiar that there was no help to be had from his old ally, the newly understood 'context'.

Oh well.

"I'm sure that they are unusual, as I do not understand what you said in the slightest." His tone was apologetic, but without treading too close to being overly so. After all, to use an appallingly bad metaphor, that dead horse had been beaten enough. "I might think the strangeness would make things interesting, but with a high...likeliness to be overwhelming." Oddly enough, the topic met the requirements of conversation segue, and he had to smile as she steered the topic back to him again. "My family is...well, unusual. Physically and mentally and behaviorally, they are unlike what I have always found familiar." A bit cryptic, but true. "There is much...differences between them." 'Variety' was the word he was looking for, unsuccessful as that attempt was. "I have ten siblings, for beginnings. The three oldest are triplets with a kalona for a mother. The next two are twins with the same mother as the youngest two, but a DIFFERENT mother than the triplets who follow them in age..." Even he didn't completely understand it. "It is very hard to be keeping them straight. We many of us look different, but most have similar markings and some even have similar names."

Now he was using terminology that she had no understanding of. He spoke of 'Kalona' in one instant and then... She shook her head, pursing her lips as she attempted to understand. She could surmise from his description that a 'kalona' must be a type of species, much like himself, but beyond that she had no idea of what it might be or how it might look. Regardless, he was able to convey that he had a decidedly large and fertile family, or at least his father had been virile at the very least - well, in some cultures that was worthy of considerable respect.

She did the only thing that she could do, she smiled.

"I do not know what a 'Kalona' is..." she replied after he had completed his description of his family, her head tilting to the side as she regarded him with further curiosity. Unless of course he was a Kalona, in which case he would be able to clarify that very quickly. If he wasn't though... well, they would begin that very roundabout way of describing things with as few words as possible.

Preferably simple ones.

...With pictures.

"They are...what, exactly?"
PostPosted: Mon Jul 08, 2013 8:34 am

It was somewhat amusing, how a word could be so common and understood to one creature, but completely foreign to another. Language was such an extraordinary thing; when facing a person who shared your 'common' language, self-expression and mutual understanding was almost assured. Sure, you might have to explain an unknown reference from time to time, but for the most part, communication was instinctive.

Coming to the Kawani lands had been an eye-opening experience in many ways for Guiliaume, not the least being the stumbling blocks that were local customs and tradtions. It was ironic that he was familiar with the common tongue of the Kawani lands, but was handicapped by his lack of familiarity with the culture. In speaking with Aziza, he had to pause and think before he spoke, but it was almost easier to do a verbal translation than a behavioral one!

"Kalona..." He mulled over the word for a few minutes, trying to figure out the best way to describe them to one who was unfamiliar with the breed. It seemed only prudent to instill an appropriate sense of caution; just because she hadn't crossed paths with that race thus far didn't mean she might not find herself in a position where the knowledge would be valuable. "Kalona are another...race of Soquili. Just as we two are not...matching," he said this as he spread his wings for demonstration. "They are also different. They have wings, not....feathered....but...scaled? No, not scaled...leather? Wings like the...small bat? Yes, I think bat. They also have fangs, like the wolf, and...horns on their heads. They are...hunters. They eat...meat. Many of them are...." He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to find the right word and avoid giving into any feelings of frustration. "Harmful."

Though he was quick to add, "Not all are harmful, but most should be...treated...with...care."

She understood what he said - though he spoke in simplistic terms he painted a picture that gave grounds for caution. She had heard of leathered winged beings that sucked blood, if these creatures fell into a similar category then they were not to be trifled with. She could do no more at this than nod her head in acceptance - suffice it to say that she sincerely hoped she was safe in her home. It was rare for anything other than those who did no more than walk, to enter this colony...

Truthfully, she wasn't entirely certain that she knew what to do if one did enter.

"I see," she replied after a few moments, her lips pursing into a thin line. "Then I will be sure to treat them with caution if I should encounter one," she offered and shook her head. "Though I would sooner I didn't, I don't want to die," she confessed. She may have lived a predictable and somewhat boring life, but she would sooner that than have no life at all!

"Your father appeared to have very broad tastes," she concluded, though it was clear she meant no offence by it. "You must never be bored..."
