Entry #001
Date: 11/16/2005

- This is Manelin's caretaker writing. I have started a journal for this handsome baby boy. I know he will need it some day, and I have decided that I shall write in his stead until he can write for himself. He seems... different... from the others. Whether this is good or bad, I cannot tell. I pray that one day he grows up and can do what I cannot: Leave the city and explore the world. I also pray that he survives until then...

End journal entry.
Signed,
Caretaker #008

Entry #002
Date: 11/18/2005

- This is Manelin's caretaker again. Manelin has become a toddler. There is rumour that the current toddlers - including Manelin - may be rooming with the older children. I wonder who would be best for little Manelin...

End journal entry.
Signed,
Caretaker #008

Entry #003
Date: 11/23/2005

- Manelin's caretaker once more. Manelin is now going to the Tower for the first time. I hope he will be alright...

End journal entry.
Signed,
Caretaker #008

Entry #004
Date: 01/03/2006

- Manelin's caretaker. Manelin is in his first class. He is being taught colors, but it appears he already dislikes the color blue and leans towards reds, yellows, and oranges. I wonder if perhaps his power is so strong that it is showing even now?

End journal entry.
Signed,
Caretaker #008

Entry #005
Date: 01/25/2006

- Manelin's caretaker for the last time. Manelin has become a child. I now turn his journal over to him and tell him it is up to him to write about his life, his secrets, his powers, whatever he wants in this unassuming book.

End journal entry.

Entry #006
Date: 01/25/2006

- Hello journal. I've heard about you. So I practiced my writing so I can look back once I am older and still read my first several entries. Is my handwriting good, journal? I've have been wanting to write in you for awhile. Like about the time I changed my icky default green clothes for clothing in reds, oranges, and yellows, which I like. Or that I happen to fear blue. Or that I had gotten Spot, my red ladybug. There is so much to tell you journal, and now I can. I am now going to bed journal. I could not wait, so I wrote in you just before bedtime. I am not used to writing for so long, so now I am tired, and I shall write more when I see you next, journal.

Signed,
Manelin

User ImageA little boy crept into the darkened room. He had wanted to do this since he first met the little baby at the adoption table where his Matron had stopped on the way to class. The really old guy was giving out lollipops but the more Tali thought about it, the sadder he got that none of the babies got lollipops.

So he had waited all day with the lollipop sitting in his pocket, getting sticky and gathering lint. Silently he stood on tiptoes and peered into the bassenet. There was the baby that got given to Parmida's caretaker while he had watched. Carefully he tried to place the candy in the bassenet but Taleisin just wasn't tall enough. A couple footsteps down the hall encouraged the boy to hurry up, so 001 just dropped the lollipop in there and ran for the door. The footsteps casually passed by and Tali got out of the room as fast as he could.

Manelin raced around his room. Red, Yellow, Green, Blue. Red, Yellow, Green, Blue. He needed to find all of them. Including blue, whether he liked it or not. But first, red. He dashed around the his room, checking his books, his journal, even his toys. Nothing. Spot flitted around him, wondering what was going on. Small dawn eyes fastened onto the hovering red blur. Spot. His ladybug was red. Black too, but that wasn't one of the colors he had to find. Red was. He cooed to the ladybug, trying to convince it that he really wasn't going to try and see what it tasted like... again. The ladybug kept its distance, having been through this before. Manelin sighed. He'd have to get red last. So what was next... yellow. He looked around. Nothing. He sighed, then looked down as he wiggled his toes. His shoes. They were more gold than yellow, but would they count? He hoped so. He sat on his bed and squirmed to take the one shoe off. He then stood up with one shoe in hand. He had to bend the knee of the leg that still had a shoe, but he'd manage. Red, yellow... green. Plenty of green. He wasn't sure if he could take his blanket though... It seemed a bit big for him. What else could he use? His eyes lit upon the glass box. His frog. He was never quite certain why he kept the frog, but now he was glad he did. He grabbed a spare chair and set it against the table holding the glass box. He climbed up to stand on top of the chair, thought about it, then climbed to stand on the table next to the glass box. Now he could reach in and grab that frog. He reached an arm in and flailed about, trying to grab the frog. The frog, however, simply hopped out of reach and stared at the flailing arm. Manelin grumped to himself, pulled his arm out, and wandered around to the other side. He quickly shoved his hand in and snagged the poor frog, who croaked with surprise. Manelin pulled the frog out, and for lack of anywhere else to place in, dumped it into his shoe. There was a rather squawk-ish sound that came from the shoe, as if the frog could smell where Manelin's feet had been. Manelin was concentrating on the next color. What was it... oh yes. That dratted, horrible, awful blue. He sighed, then looked around the room yet again. Now what was he to use? He didn't see anything that could even resemble blue, but then again, he had made his matron remove anything that was blue out of his room. He would have to go elsewhere to find that cursed blue... Wait a minute. Didn't that one child, Tali? have some blue stuff? Maybe he should go ask Tali for something blue. Surely Tali had something blue that wouldn't kill him... He trotted out the door in search of Tali's room...

From Tali's Room:

A lone toddler dressed in reds and yellows came stumbling into the room, one shoe on and the other wiggling yellow shoe clutched shut in both hands. A red ladybug flitted around him, just outside the toddler's reach. He looked around for the older child Tali. Surely Tali would let him borrow something blue for his homework. He called out, hesitant, "Tali?" The older kid was working on his homework as well. His Matron had let him borrow some colored ink to color in the map. Bent over his work, the child had his tongue half sticking out in concentration as he struggled with the quill pen. "Tali?" a hesitant voice called out. 001 jerked in surprise, nearly spilling the ink on his homework. Carefully, he stuck the stopper in the ink pot before turning around. Hesitating in the doorway was one of the toddlers, dressed in red. Taliesin had seen him around a few times, but wasn't quite sure of his name. "Come in," he said with a soothing smile, trying not to let on that he had no clue what the toddler's name was. The toddler squirmed a little, yet when comforted but Tali's soothing smile, he stood still. Hopefully that meant Tali wasn't angry with him coming. "It's me, Manelin. I was hoping..." he faltered for a moment while the ladybug hovered around his head. "I was hoping..." Come on, spit it out! some voice inside his head demanded. "I was hoping that you could help me with my homework," he ended his request in a rush. He tried again, trying hard to speak slowly and clearly. "I need to find something blue, and I don't have anything in that color. Would you please help?" His dawn eyes grew large and round as he absently fiddled with the shoe in his hands. There was clearly something struggling to get out of the shoe by this point. Taliesin's face brightened up. An excuse to put off working on that horrid map. How was he supposed to know where the Elementals lived. "I've got lotsa blue things." Taliesin mused out loud. He got out of his chair and headed over the the cubby that held his things. "I'm sure I can help you. What kind of things do you want? I've got this mask and hat, a shirt, I'd lend you my quill but I need it for my own homework." Taliesin grinned down at Manelin. Manelin's eyes lit up. "Something small, easy to carry?" He wondered what kind of homework Tali had to do. A hat didn't sound that bad... He had his own hat, and it didn't try to kill him. "How about the hat?" The older boy laughed. "Sure thing." Taliesin, unaware of Manelin's fear of the color blue, took the hat down from it's shelf. Kneeling next to the toddler, he neatly popped it on the toddlers head. Manelin squeaked when Tali popped the blue hat onto his head. He quickly closed his eyes, scrunching up his face, and awaited drowning. After a minute or so of no drowning, he carefully opened his eyes to blink at Tali. "It doesn't hurt!" He exclaimed gratefully, then blushed a bright red. Surely Tali already knew that, otherwise he wouldn't have put it on his head, now would he? He could swear the ladybug fluttering around him was laughing at his antics. He mumbled an apology about his reaction and waited to see what Tali would do. Taliesin blinked at Manelin as the toddler exclaimed, "It didn't hurt!" Completely misinterpreting Manelin's glee, a sudden anger bloomed in the boy. A frown worked it's way onto the child's face. Softly the toddler mumbled an apology, which Tali waved away. Remaining kneeling, Taliesin studied the toddler carefully. "Manelin," he started seriously, "is there someone picking on you?" The poor toddler was so scared to come in the room and then he thought that Tali was going to hurt him when he put the hat on. Manelin shook his head quickly, indicating No. His eyes became downcast, and he scuffed at the floor with his shod foot as he explained in a soft, quavering, voice, "I'm just afraid of the color blue. I don't know why. No one knows why. I just have this deep-seated fear of drowning whenever I see blue. That's why my matron took everything blue out of my room. I'm sorry." His entire body showed that he was sorry as he waited for an outburst. It always came when he said he was frightened for his very life against blue. That was why he never mentioned it anymore... Afraid of blue? The gentlest color of them all? Tali blinked a bit, taken aback. "Well.. That's good... I guess.." Taliesin realized what words had just slipped out of his mouth and hastened to clarify. "I mean, it's good you're not getting picked on." Gently Tali placed a hand on Manelin's shoulder. "It's okay to be afraid, but you need to remember, the color blue won't hurt you. Not on things like hats or blankets, or circles. You just need to get used to it." Taliesin ruffled the toddler's hair. "I need to get back to work, but feel free to come by sometime. After all, I'm going to want my hat back eventually!" Manelin looked up at Tali again, amazed that Tali wasn't shouting about his "stupid" fear of blue. He blinked at Tali's words, then nodded at the clarification. He wasn't getting picked on as long as he didn't mention his "feelings" about blue. He looked into Tali's eyes as Tali placed a hand on his shoulder and told him it was okay to be afraid! Tali was the first ever to understand him! He couldn't help it. After Tali ruffled his hair, his eyes started to water up, and he placed his arms around Tali and sobbed into his shoulder. "You understand! You actually understand!" was his only reason behind doing this. He actually felt embarrassed about doing this, but he couldn't stop the flow of tears that he had kept bottled up until now. They demanded to be set free. Demanded! The ladybug fluttered helplessly around the two, unsure about what to do as the frog that had been trapped in the shoe thus far escaped unseen. To say Tali was startled when Manelin threw his arms around him would be quite the understatement. The child nearly jerked backwards out of surprise. Ever the bleeding heart -not that he would tell Niki that- Taliesin just stood there, awkwardly patting Manelin on the back. Tali devoutly hoped that Vinnie would not choose this moment to come waltzing in the door. For once, it seemed his prayer's were answered as the two were left alone. Taliesin continued to pat Manelin until the toddler had cried all the tears out. Manelin's tears finally ran dry, and he sniffed in surprise, waiting for them to come back. When they didn't, he pulled his head away Tali's rather wet shoulder and ran an arm across his eyes, trying to dry them. "Sorry," he murmured, "I couldn't help it." That was an understatement. He debated getting out of there right now, but it was then he realized that his shoe wasn't in his hands anymore. He looked around for it through sore eyes and spotted it behind Tali. He moved then bent down to scoop it up, halting as he saw that it was now empty. He blushed even more then he already had. He muttered some words he had heard a matron use in an angry moment under his breath, and straightened with his empty shoe in one hand as his eyes darted around the room in an attempt to find his green froggy. "Erm, Tali? Can I now have some help finding my frog? He's suppose to be the green thing I found..." Tali sighed before smiling at the younger boy. "Sure. It can't have gone too far..." Unknowingly those words had been spoken for many, many generations before a long intense, and usually unfruitful, search. The boy frowned at the door for a moment. "Why don't you look up and down the hall and make sure the frog didn't leave the room. I'll start looking under the beds." With that the older boy got down on his hands and knees and began to look under the beds. Manelin nodded in agreement at that, although we wasn't quite sure why Tali was looking under the beds when he was shorter than Tali. He quickly trotted over to the doorway and looked down first. No froggy there. He kept an eye out in case his froggy tried to escape and then looked left. No froggy. He looked right. No froggy. He sighed, then set himself up to guard the doorway in case his froggy ever did try to make a break for it. The frog itself, on the other hand, was curled up tightly as it watched the search from under the lowest object to still be above the floor. Well, second lowest - it couldn't fit under the lowest. It had scooted all the way towards the back and was against the wall. However, there was this tempting red thing flitting back and forth in front of the frog, as if daring the frog to come out. Too bad it was out of reach and not under the second lowest object like the frog was. Taliesin muttered softly to himself as he finished looking under all the beds and desks. "Hmm... I was just by the cubbyholes so I don't think he's there. Where else haven't I looked?" While Manelin continued to keep watch, Spot danced back and forth near the bottom of something. It appeared it was trying to say it spotted something. Spot hoped Tali saw the movement soon before the frog decided it had enough and ate Spot. A flash of red caught Tali's eye, and he bend down towards the partially open dresser drawer. He hadn't noted it but, there was a ladybug flying around agitatedly. Gently cupping his hands over the bug, Tali called to Manelin. "Is this your ladybug?" While waiting for an answer the boy peered into the shadowy depths of the drawer. Was that something glinting back at him? Manelin turned around to look at Tali, hesitated, then came over to look. "Yup, that's Spot alright. What are you doing, Spot?" The ladybug fluttered around in Tali's hands, wanting to get out and wanting to stay where it was safe. The frog tried to shift farther back when it saw a large pink face come into view. It did not want to go back into the smelly shoe! It blinked its large eyes rapidly, trying to adjust to the light changes. Taliesin peered in the draw again, jerking back when something inside it fell down. "I think I might have found your frog," he said, trying not to show the brief spike of fear that had shot through him. He didn't like the dark shadowy places. "Will you reach in and see, I don't want your ladybug to get lost as well as the frog.. " Manelin's skin prickled with goosebumps. He'd rather have held Spot and let Tali look. He started forward with stilted steps, and stopped beside Tali to peer in as well. This couldn't be any worse than trying to get the frog out of it's glass box, it was just... darker. He steeled himself and reached a hand in. The frog was not amused. That same little grubby hand that had taken it out of its nice home was reaching in here to stuff it back into that smelly shoe. At least it was just out of reach. It croaked in laughter at that. Manelin made a face as he pulled his arm back out. "I can't reach my froggy. It's just out of my reach." He was not happy that he couldn't reach the froggy. If only he was a little bigger! "I'll take Spot if you want to try," he offered. Taliesin didn't particularly like that arrangement better but the toddler was just too little. Carefully handing Spot back to Manelin, the child wiped his hands of the sweat that was building up. Reluctantly he reached in for the frog, feeling around until he touched the thing. With a frown, Taliesin firmly wrapped his hand around the frog and brought it out. "There." Manelin carefully took hold of Spot, who now knew that the ladybug taster was holding him. He flew around inside the cupped hands, trying to get out. Manelin watched as Tali easily reached in and pulled the frog out. He released Spot then clapped his hands in glee. "You make it look so easy!" he said happily. The frog was not so happy. It wiggled and squirmed within Tali's grasp, and managed to hop free... Just to have that brat Manelin reach up and pluck it from the air by one leg. It wiggled and squirmed as it dangled from it's poor leg, but could not get free. Manelin looked at the frog with wide eyes. "Maybe I should hold you this way so you can't get away again," he mused out loud. He looked up at Tali. "Thank you Tali," he said happily. His matron had always told him to say 'Please' and 'Thank you' whenever he wanted something or got something. Taliesin shut the drawer quickly, almost as soon as the frog was out. Heaving a sigh of relief the boy went to return the frog to Manelin. Unfortunately the frog jumped out of his hands and straight into the air. Quickly Manelin snatched it out of the air by one leg. It dangled still kicking futilely as Manelin thanked Taliesin. "You're welcome! I think you should put them somewhere safe so you don't loose them before class." Taliesin escorted Manelin to the door, regretfully having to return to his own homework. Maybe this time they wouldn't lose a frog or something. Manelin blushed. "Maybe I should put froggy back into his glass box until class," he agreed. It shouldn't be hard to gather up Red Spot, Green Froggy, Yellow Shoe, and Blue Hat just before class, should it? He allowed Tali to escort him to the door, looked around, sat down, put his shoe back on (it felt weird, but hey, there had been a frog in there!), stood back up, patted the hat on top of his head, and pretty much skipped all the way back to his room, feeling giddy with glee that he had completed his assignment so fast!

Manelin skipped happily into his room, with a blue hat on his head, a green froggy in one hand, both yellow shoes on his feet, and a red ladybug hovering around his head. He carefully put the frog back into its glass box, carefully took the hat off and set it next to his own hat, took off both shoes and socks, hunted around for a clean pair of socks and shoes, found them, and put the clean socks and shoes on his feet. He grinned happily. He had done it! Now all he had to do was gather them up to take to class when the time came...

- I'm so glad that I'm not in trouble. Why? you ask? Because I burned not one, but two journals. Not you personally, journal, the one I had before you... and Parmida's old journal. She got a new one as well. What I find interesting, journal, is that you two new ones have everything in you that the old journals did, except in neater print. I don't get it. Oh well, at least I didn't lose anything. I wonder how Parmida is reacting...

Manelin sighed as he closed the cover of his new journal and looked longingly at the door to his room. Ok, so he wasn't quite honest with his journal. He was in trouble. One of which being that he was grounded. He didn't know how long... He looked around. At least he had Spot to keep him company...

- Cool. My matron came in with a box that says it's from Tali. I don't know what's inside. My matron says she knows and that if I wanted to return the favor, to just ask her since I'm grounded, and can't do so myself. So I asked her if I could get one for Tali and Parmida. She just gave me an odd look before leaving again. I hope she gets them.

I wonder what the odd look is for?

Manelin

P.S. I miss seeing the others...
P.P.S. Matron just came in and left again. She says it's done. I think she's talking about the presents...
P.P.P.S. Ok, I think I'll stop with those... As soon as I stop receiving boxes... Anyways, I got one from Parmida! I guess this is what adopted siblings friends are for.

- Open Log. Start Entry.

We find that all our previous records were overwritten. By whom, or what, we do not know. All we know is that the only logs recording the events by Experiment Number 008 are within its journal. We took the liberty of copying everything written inside everytime the experiment wrote in it, and for this, we are glad. The experiment is definitly showing signs of a fire elemental, even within the banned area created to subdue elemental powers. It set fire to two journals; it's own and 006's. Luckily, the matrons of both had made backups of the entries contained within, and even gave them new copies of said entries. The matrons have also taken away anything with open flames, as that was found to be the cause of how the experiment started the fire. It seems it can at least sense it's powers, even if it is cut off from them, as it has decided to wear fire-themed clothes during its toddler and child years. We have only this to go off of, and yet, for now, it is enough. We shall report more when we gain the information.

- Heh. You would think I would write in here more often since I was grounded. Guess not. Well, the boxes opened. A yellow carnation from Tali and a red rose from Parmida. How nice of those two! In my favorite colors! Well, I think my matron is thinking about ungrounding me, which is a good sign...

Oh, I was going through my entries diary, and saw that I had failed to tell you about the game of hide and seek I played with Tali, Niki, Parmida, Edmund, Selma, and Susan. As for who was last found...

My matron looks more frantic then usual... I wonder if there are new children around somewhere... Is Matron taking care of another child? I already think she's taking care of Parmida as well; she does look up to her like she was her personal matron...

- Heh... I'm really bad about keeping up in here, aren't I? Well, let's see... There was the game of hide-and-seek, in which we found ourselves locked in the basement for awhile, then there was the party... The teens vanished for awhile, some new kids came in... And there was the egg hunt we just did. There. I think I'm up to date now.

... And my matron yelled at me for not doing the last entry properly. I'm going to try and make sure I do so from now on...

- Really, really bad about keeping up in here. Anyways. I'm now a teen. Yay me. Not much has been happening. There's been talk that the "first group" became adults. There's also a rumor floating around that one of them didn't make it. I wonder which one?

I haven't seen Parmida since she's become an adult either. I hope she didn't leave for the earth city already... I haven't had a chance to say goodbye yet... Oooo... I hope she wasn't the one that was deemed colorless... Poor her if she was...
