Your rival (Silver) is Giovanni's son, and storyline wise he stole Totodile. (depends on what you chose really), but Gold chose Cyndaquil in the manga, Crystal had Chikorita and Silver had Totodile.
Giovanni is the Leader of Team Rocket for those who don't know

I've only seen the manga of Red and up to Red disappearing to Yellow being the main character. Up from there, I haven't seen it anymore. Do you have any links or reference of where I can look to get up to speed?
