Ail smiled up at Karl, feeling her face heat up a bit. "Thank you, my love," she replied a touch shyly. They could spend all day together just purring happily and rubbing against each other. But not this day. This was the day they planned to find a place to start a family together. A new future. For Karl. For both of them.
She pranced forward, tail twitching and arching high in pleasure for a moment, before it began to swing tigerishly behind her. The sun reflected off her auburn mane, and the gold and amethyst and garnet and satins she bore, brightening her rich, jewel-toned appearance. There were caves nearer her mother's family's territories, in the woods. Good space for teaching kittens hide and seek. Good for any hunting they wanted to do, together, and with their kittens.
Ail grinned happily, letting her pearly feline canines shine. "Let's go. I know a good place to look, too." Ferns and bracken and a meadow of wildflowers nearby, too.... Would he like it? She'd have to see what he thought when they got there.
Ahead, overhanging a path, grew tall, sturdy oaks, their branches interlacing to form a sheltering canopy of summer leaves. A stream burbled alongside, shallow, quiet, and home to tadpoles and minnows. Squirrels chittered cluelessly overhead, unaware of the differences between Ail, Karl, and other Soquili. She thought she could glimpse something colorful growing among the roots and mosses and other greenery, and hear mice scurrying through the floor of countless generations of decomposing leaves and soft, dark earth. A promising place for their kittens, indeed.

Karloff let her lead the way into the forest, he knew that she loved these woods. Her family had lurked there for many years, often she had told him of her foalhood here. She used to lurk in the shadows and dart through piles of leaves here. This place had been happy for her.
He scented the air, taking in the smell of fresh game nearby. There would be stuff to hunt nearby. The forest was teaming with fresh life. They could raise kittens here and their mother could tell them how much she had loved this place She could share her foalhood with them in a way he never could.
This could be a place they were happy.
He watched Ailbhe practically dance on her dainty hooves, her tail wriggling in the air. She was pure joy. He purred as he pushed his face against her again, "I should have know my little cheshire. The woods." He laughed, deep and booming as he looked on her with pride

Ailbhe laughed happily. "Yes. The forest. What better place for Cheshires to live, and what place more stimulating to the mind of a kitten?" Well, OK, Karl wasn't a Cheshire, and Ailbhe was only half a Cheshire, but her father considered her a Cheshire, she considered herself a Cheshire, and Karl was happy to be included in a warm, welcoming family, even if said happy family could have an odd sense of humor.
The deep, booming voice of her mate filled her, rumbling through her lighter bones, making her shiver appreciatively, feeling him so close. Ail wished, not for the first time, that she had a more feline spine, to arch pleasurably against him. Failing that, she rubbed her cheek and tail against his dark, warm bulk.
"The places I'm thinking of aren't just pretty. They should be safe places to keep the kittens as they grow. And good hiding places, too. They'll all need some fixing up before winter, but we should have some months ahead to work on that, if you like any one of them," she burbled cheerfully.
Her sapphire eyes gazed up toward his pure ruby ones, watching avidly for those emotions she'd gotten used to identifying since childhood. And given the pure tones, it could be a challenge. A challenge that Ailbhe had gladly accepted.
She led her way around a bend in the path they took, and stepped off the path, heading for a cave well-screened by a copse of trees about five feet from the entrance. It was a moderate one, as these caves went, but it was a good one to start with, and close enough to one branch of the stream to have easy access to water. Not as good in the winter, but winter was hard for everyone.
"Here's the first one," she said, gesturing with her muzzle. "Not the biggest, but not the smallest, either. Some screening by the trees from wind and rain and trouble, but there are a few that are a little better shielded. Mostly towards the mountains, and some of those have pretty small openings, so they're pretty dark, too. This is still bright enough to see around easily," she explained, stepping ahead into the clearing. The twigs, needles, and other detritus of the forest mast crunched slightly under her woody brown hooves. She glanced toward the nearest streambed. "Over that way is a stream, and a good source of water, except for in the winter. We'll have to work harder, or go farther in the winter. Only good sources of water nearby are the river and any stray waterfalls."
Turning back toward her mate, she searched his eyes for signs of his opinion. "So...do you like it? Does it seem a nice enough place, or should we keep looking?" she asked curiously. Quite frankly, this was also one of her favorites, though she had other favorites, and she hoped he liked one of the ones she liked.

Karloff smiled as Ailbhe purred against him. He rubbed his head onto hers. Following her to the first cave, he watched the joy in her being as she spoke of it. No matter what she said, this one was her favorite. His eyes glowed as he considered how the area could be defended for kittens, but also able to be used easily by them. The spot seemed about as ideal as they would find. The water wasn't too far away either. It would freeze in winter, but he could smash his hooves through when needed. He would have to hunt further off, but that wouldn't be a problem. It was better to hunt further away for food so that during the cold months you could have some closer. All in all, the place was sound--and beautiful When he looked at the light in his love's eyes, he knew that the place was perfect. "Ailbhe, I don't think that there could be a better place than this for us." He leaned his head over her neck, letting out a throaty purr.
