Yahiko i think Eric Stuart did a really good job on Seto's voice! I admit it's a little to high pictched but still he did a better job then most american voice actors! You really have to give them credit for trying thou Eric Stuart and most of the other guy voices are decent, but people like Mako and co. could have been better. In Shaman King they just sucked. Every last one of them. Maybe Ren was OK, since he and Noa had the same seiyuu, I think...

Dude...I saw some Battle City episodes in Chinese and they were better than in English! xp I hate the dubbers. I really really do.....testified by my really loud cussing at the dubbers while I watched the Chinese episodes...I was like (translate to English) ' KUSO-ING TEME DUBBERS!!' Bleh... Mai and Mokuba are the only ones who sound decent in Chinese...Isis sounds old, Yami sounds like an old woman, and Kaiba...Kaiba sounds.....like a nasally kid on helium....*suicides* I feel so violated!

Well... Considering most people would not be here if not for the American version I'm glad 4kids translated it. (key word most, I know there are some hard core otaku people here) Also, it's FREE to watch on television so I don't think people have a right to complain about something they're not paying for.
Plus, compared to many other dubs I've seen the Yu-Gi-Oh! one is actually very high quality. For the most part the voices fit the characters. And consider how hard it it to prodject your voice, get the emotion right and fit it in to mouth movements all at the same time. Voice actors don't have it easy. As for changing names and editing... It's being broadcasted for little kids. It's target audience is 7-14 year olds. Children would be more able to relate to someone named Joey rather than Katsuya. And if they didn't edit out some scenes (nudity with the harpie lady) there would be angry mothers out protesting in the streets, and there would be a very high chance of the show getting banned altogether.
Maybe they should have put it on Adult Swim where they can show it in its original format. But for Saturday morning cartoons on public cable, I'd say 4kids did an excellent job.

The target audience was originally or teenagers, actually. That's pretty easy to notice in the first chapter of the manga. stare What kind of freaky kids go around stabbing their hands? As for the seiyuu [voice actors], they are as trained to make an incredible array of voices as they are to recognize all the commands in thier little recording box. Take Eric Stuart for example, he does Seto Kaiba, James of Pokeman, Gourry Gabriev of The Slayers, and even the Big Five dude who had the obsession with penguins. Eric Stuart just happens to be an excellent sieyuu [with his own band, might I add], but he and the other seiyuu could have done better with some of the other characters. [Who else hates the new Mai?] I'll probably add to this later, but for now I must leave.

[Who else hates the new Mai?] I'll probably add to this later, but for now I must leave. I'm aware the Japanese manga and anime were originaly targeted at teenagers. My point was the American version is aimed at much younger audiences, otherwise the producers would have had to put it into a different timeslot and have gotten lower ratings. Also, they never translated the first season of the anime (the part you were refferencing) for that reason, it would have been almost impossible to edit out all the non G rated scenes and still have a coherent show. Plus, there are many worse people the producers could have gotten to dub the anime. Ever seen the dubbed version of Weiss Kreuz (Knight Hunters is the American title)? It's blatantly obvious that the only reason they dubbed it was so they could add that feature to the DVD. The Yu-Gi-Oh dubbing could have been much worse (though I think it's fine).

It was so funny, 4Kids came out with DVDs that have a subtitle option, but the subtitles are just the dub written out...and it doesn't match the Japanese. gonk

That site is the best thing that ever happened to me since Gaia. 3nodding heart 3nodding heart 3nodding xd heart The only downsides are that you have to be able to read spanish to be able to get around the site, and since I am taking Espanol 1 right now, that site is like my new best friend; the other thing is that you have to create an account to be able to download the episodes. Anyhow, there are: Duelist Kingdom, Doma, KC Grand Prix, Memory Arc, Ceremonial Battle and GX episodes. This is the site: YAMI

I find that the greatest tragedy that 4kids has pinned upon the "Yu-Gi-Oh!" dub is in making it so dumbed down for kids. I can totally understand editing out guns and whatnot(Though I am totally a supporter of the Second Amendment), because parents would complain otherwise. However, removing the true depth of characters from a show is what really destroys it.
My favorite character in the Japanese version, hands down, is Jounouchi. He really has so much more to him than he shows to those around him. However, in the dub, the only reason you have to like him is to laugh at his jokes and say "Well, he's a nice guy." The dub almost completely removes his self-conscious attitude and lack of confidence in himself.
GRAH! Makes me angry. He's such a great character... crying

If you find American dubbing bad, you'd commit suicide after seeing one second of the dutch version. Bakura has the same voice actor as Steve from Blue's Clues, and Kaiba has the same voice-actor as Maysa from MegaMan. Joey's voice actor does Boots in Dora the Adventurer, some commercials and a lot of random people that walk by in the series and stuff. Once, Weevil and Rex had the same voice.... crying I HATE HOLLAND!!!!! I'M DUTCH!!!! cry

4Kids should die. Done. End of story. Bye-bye. They completely trash any series they touch! Like-like some evil child-virus!!! And then when parents think "oh, it's a kids' series, so I'll buy my brat the manga", they totally spaz when they get their 5-year-old the manga and find out that YuGiOh was DEFINATELY not intended for children viewers. Plus, they screw up the voices. Eric Stuart is awesome, and Yuugi and Yami no Yuugi did ok, too.... as well as Yami no Bakura...... but all the others are kinda...... wierd. (Did you HEAR Honda's voice during Duelist Kingdom??? He sounded like he had a beetle up his nose!!!) So, yeah. I think 4Kids should burn and die.
