How do you all practice? Is it a routine? Do you read, or just jam? Sometimes all I want to do is stick in a disc and play along. Sometimes improvising. I guess it's different if you're in a band then you practice material. I'm not right now so I just wing it once a day or so, but sometimes I wonder if I'm getting the most out of the time spent. Sometimes I play whatever comes to me. Sometimes in the dark.

I need a band. I have no discipline. It sure is fun to play in the dark though. biggrin
You need a band well what instrument do you play?

Lol...easy-when I practice-I start with scales out the butt to warm up-sight reading-any charts that need work [practice stuff you actully need work on-don't practice stuff you sound good on or know well-unless running through whole piece-cuz it's kind of a waste of time]...focus on what you're doing [time isn't important-so much as that you actually improve something and understand something better before you sat down to practice].
After working on that-and my private lessons assigments-I work on solos and e-tudes-then when I have time-I try to play something fun-or play along with a cd-or improv. work...something to remind me-after all the other stuff-that I still love music and there are enjoyable parts to it...so routine and non-routine.
I don't always practice all this at once either...
Hope this helps...I'm a sax player-so yeah ^^;;

well in band, i'm in pitt so we have our own little room and we rarely practice. i play vibes and stuff that you wouldn't have lying around your house so i don't practice all that much.

for piano, i usually don't practice, but now that i'm done with my CM testing, my teacher is doing all jazz with me and i practice a lot.

I make it a part of my day to practice on my bass for at least 30-45 mins. During that I make sure to do a few things:

1. Finger exercises (get 'em stretched)
2. Go over songs I'm working on // work on techniques
3. Work on sight reading
4. Work on a lil' improv // write a litte lick or something

I don't always get to do all of these, I get distracted easily, but I think it helps to have a little structure. 3nodding

I wish I knew how to practice. I just bought myself a new horn. A Bach Stradivarius long bore... *drool*. Anyway. Being a uni. student I find I don't have time to play. I'm playing in an orchestra that rehearses once a week and my jazz repetoire consists of beginners' books sweatdrop . To warm up I generally start with a slow song, Bach's 'Air' for example to get the chops going and then launch into songs with hard fingering or fast beat. Mostly exercises though.

I practice 1 hour a day. I start with listening to a song and picking out some ideas and bits from it. I do lip slurs ( trombone ) and scales. I go over my music, then improv. solo the rest of the time, and end with the same song.

I've been doing pretty good going at least an hour a day. Then I find myself not wanting to stop, which is good. Sometimes I don't stop and go 2 or more hours, but get late for other stuff. =/

Bleh. I'm not nearly as efficient with my practicing as I should be. XP

I usually warm up with a few scales or lipslurs (I play trombone, by the way) and then practice parts from whatever piece is in front of me. x__x It usually takes half an hour or so.

Oh i should've posted this earlier but yes i did make it in by default they only had to audition Piccs and Drumline.

So in October i'll be going to Osaka Japan for a week it's only gonna cost me $575!!!

I need to practice more solo stuff like aebersolds cuz at rehearsal my solo's are sound sub-par. I should listen to more Dexter or Sonny Rollins and maybe try to do some transcriptions. (I dont have time to transcribe...)
