"You shouldn't...and thats the point... I have nothing to gain... So that means you should chase me out right now. But because I am injured and can't run... Then I have to try and buy myself a bit of time... So my only bargaining chip.... This secret that can either hurt or save the clans..." He shrugged and winced. If he absolutely had to, he could run away... But he didn't want to run... He had a job to do.

Tidepaw's back instantly bristled at the name of the hated Clan. RiverClan! Those filthy, worthless trashheaps masquerading as warriors!! Tidepaw was filled with so much rage that she could hardly think and heard nothing Spitshine said. For one wild moment, she wanted to defend Spitshine, defend him to the death--just to show RiverClan what was what.

No! No, you hate RiverClan because they're a bunch of cross-borders traitors! You hate them because they take in rogues! Because they're a reflect--no, no. They are not a reflection of ShadowClan, but taking in this...this...garbage would be against the Code. We must honor the code. "Talk's cheap," Tidepaw scoffed. "You don't know anything, mangy. You're just lying to trick us and steal our food. Go on, take that head start I gave you." Besides, Moonstar's our leader, the best leader we ever had. If she says he leaves, he leaves, no questions asked.

Larksparrow had been sleeping. Fitfully, yes, but sleeping, and for once the dream had been silent. It never left her mind, but at the time Spitshine entered camp it had been fluttering quietly, with the muffled, misty quality of a childhood memory. As the white she cat bolted upright in time with Moonstar's angry cry the colors and sounds surged forth and clamored for her attention once more.

She hissed, the sound not carrying beyond her den but very real nonetheless. She shook herself in the fashion that a stupid dog might, as if if to throw off the odd sensation that clung to her. Something was wrong.

Larksparrow did not quite consider herself an elder, but she had seen a great deal more moons than any other clan's medicine cat, and it showed in the slow, deliberate way she emerged from her den. Her shoulders drooped in a manner not entirely the product of sleep deprivation.

But her mind was sharp, incredibly so. Blue eyes narrowed to slits as she caught sight and scent of the newcomer and a hundred dream influenced possibilities came to mind. Could it be that....?

No. Larksparrow made no decision without being certain. She prided herself on that, when the other cats she shared dreams with at the Moonstone chased at half fancies and fell prey to their own impulses. Her fur bristled as she drew up beside Moonstar. She would support her leader in this. Dream or no dream, such disease riddled carrion with whiskers could not be safe for them, especially not as he sat now, in the middle of their camp, past all defenses, his fetid breath at their very heart.

"You heard our leader," she hissed quietly, voice as icy as her eyes had become. Then, to reassure herself as much as to reassure her clan, she added, "Starclan does not work through the likes of you."

Tidepaw's ears twitched at the sound of a cat emerging from the medicine cat's den. She turned and, seeing that it was Larksparrow, stepped aside, bowing her head in respect. There was just something about Larksparrow. She was a cat's cat. She didn't need to be anything other than what she was, which was the best medicine cat that had ever lived, so far as Tidepaw was concerned. When Larksparrow passed her judgment on the flea-ridden mess in front of them, Tidepaw shivered with delight. Yes! The two most highly-respected individuals in the Clan had practically given them the go-ahead!

Let's see, Whitestrike is as excited as me to dig into this festering, overgrown rat, and from what I know of Magmafang, he'll probably want to rush in to prove how skilled a fighter he is. So that's three of us against an injured hairball. Okay, so it's not the most honorable or epic chase in the history of the Clans, but it should get the job done neatly and efficiently. Oh, man! I hope he doesn't run through our tunnel to ThunderClan! We'd never get the smell out! Though I guess the smell of the Thunderpath and ThunderClan ought to drown it out... She shook herself and started stretching. It was close to running time!

Moonstar listened to Spitshine, her face controlled for the most part. Her ear slightly perked at the medicine cat's arrival. Larksparrow's words were thankfully on the leader's side. They helped her stand and declare "If RiverClan doesn't trust you, neither shall I. You are as foreign as a twolegger, and just as welcome. If there was a danger to know of, it would have been revealed to us by other means."

She pushed any pity or remorse aside for her next decision.
"Your wounds do not look life-threatening. Unless you say otherwise, Larksparrow." the black cat addressed the cat next to her with necessary respect for the comment made. "If she agrees with me, you will go back where you came. No outsider would know how to help us." They didn't know how to help themselves, after all. The last thing they needed was an ignorant fool lecturing them, one that didn't even have the courtesy to name himself.

"My senior warriors will see you out if necessary." This obviously would exclude the excited cats. Moonstar wasn't treating this as a game. Cats like Rottenbone could easily take this cat out with taste and tact, something she could be proud of. The less she had to be reminded of Darkpaw, the better.

Tidepaw's heart sank. It wasn't fair! Why did senior warriors get all the fun?! Before she could let herself think bad thoughts about their age and relative proximity to death, she turned and slunk back to the elder's den. Right. They'd need their bedding changed. Huh, Rottenbone and Magmafang and the rest will be there soon enough. I hope they enjoy it, the lucky foxes. Still resisting the urge to do something as immature and melodramatic as mutter under her breath, she started clawing up the old bedding with the same fury she wished to unleash on all strangers to her Clan--even if she was half-Clan herself.

The cold mud clung to his toes and matted the fur on his paws from all the travel he'd done. Trailing the outer edges of the territory in hopes of finding jsut a bit more prey, something that wasn't likely to poison their warriors with sickness. It was dangerous enought being leafbare, but it was a particularly barren leafbare this year.

Foxstar weaved carefully among the dead and dying brush littering the marshes, thickening as he neared camp once more, a few additions to the fresh kill pile and one of his sons, Wildpelt, in tow. They had managed to find some prey, but he wished they'd found more. Foxstar couldn't help but worry.
Approshing camp, he flicked his tail for Wildpelt to slow down as he did, carefully listening to the commotion rising from just beyond. The red furred feline frowned around the snake and field mouse in his jaws, scenting the air and finding traces of a smell that instantly set his fur on in. Lashing his tail to signal Wildpelt, Foxstar burst forward, wasting no time on reentering camp.

Sharp purple eyes scanned the growing crowd of cats, finally settling on the loner whos scent made Foxstar cringe internally, and his gaze grow cold.

Promptly, Foxstar trotted to the dwindling and rather sad freshkill pile, adding their meager findings, and taking his place near Moonstar, giving her an apolegetic glance for not being around earlier when this cat was first brought here.

"Have I missed much?" He asked in a low tone as not to be heard by others, turning a sharp cold gaze on the rogue who rather set the leader on edge. He didn't like this. Leafbare was not the time to even consider letting ousiders near their camp.

Wildpelt followed his father's lead quietly, but that didn't stop him from glowering darkly at the intruder and taking up a position near his brother as silent support.

Ironbell padded into camp with a barely discernible limp. Today sucked. She had camped out all day at Fourtrees praying prey from one of the other three territories would wander onto neutral ground. A rabbit came dangerously close to stepping out of Windclan territory and tread the line grazing for nearly an hour. Ironbell's respect for the warrior code was sorely tested. After the rabbit had hopped off, she managed to score a chipmunk. A skinny chipmunk. And then she'd got her paw stuck in a mouse hole.

Then she scented a stranger. Ironbell placed the small chipmunk on her uninjured paw. "I say we kill him and eat him," she said in a totally deadpan voice.

So the choice was to be hers? Larksparrow lashed her tail back and forth violently to hide a shiver. Pleasure at the power, foreboding at... something else.

What was Starclan's will? The ancestors were speaking in even more complicated riddles than usual. If Larksparrow sent the loner away, and he actually did have a message, blame would fall on her shoulders. If that happened, the medicine cat would take no consolation in the fact that Riverclan too denied what wisdom the stranger claimed.

The she cat growled quietly as she turned away from those thoughts. It was leafbare, the last time the clan should be taking any risks. And though she didn't hold any of the other medicine cats in true esteem she wasn't above using them as an excuse.

"You had enough strength to flee Riverclan in the cold of leafbare, when black water makes rocks slick and ice coated puddles hide beneath dead reeds. Nothing stopped you from crossing marshes when bitterly cold mud causes even our own warriors, accustomed as they are to the terrain, to think twice before hunting or training anywhere but on land closest to camp. If you have such strength, then you should be able to use it in the leaf carpeted forest or on rabbit rich moors.

"Koisplash apparently saw nothing wrong with you to let his leaders chase you out, and as Starclan blind as warrior code breaking Heartpool is, she knows wounds and sickness too. I pass the same judgment."

Speech concluded, Larksparrow turned to make her way back to her den.

So this was his choice. Stupid medicine cat. Koisplash had known there was something wrong with him... the instant he walked into the camp. His new choice was to attack and run... Or go willingly and attack at the border. Raising his head slightly he nodded. "Alright I will go." He flicked his tail. Standing he moved carefully. He could feel his mind burning with the sickness. All he had to do was get one of the senior warriors ill and they would go to the medicine cat.

***
((Minor time skip... about ten minutes later.))

Sitting on the border he watched rottenbone carefully. The black tom had been instructed to take him back where he had found the Tom. His mind was barely hanging on his vision was going black. He waited, carefully, dangerous in the sickness' brain. He had to wait. Once the Black cat turned to start back, Spitshine launched his attack. His teeth sank into the black tom's scruff. Drool coated the black tom's fur. The other cat that was sent, ToadLeap, stared. Spitshine was back on the other side of the border and coming off of his episode before Toadleap could move. Spitshine smirked. The sickness worked in many different ways. It either hit hard and fast... or it waited building up to a more powerful hit that could kill.
----

Rottenbone didn't know what had hit him. It burned, His pelt felt like it was the only thing that was holding him together. He lied on the ground panting. His vision faded in and out. "ToadLeap." His tongue seemed to large for his mouth and his pelt his only source of control, was now very itchy. He lied the using his claws to claw at his ears. "ToadLeap."

ToadLeap was just considered a senior warrior. He had been sitting idle to the edge of the group. It was afterall his father who had brought the rogue in. Toadleap had traipsed into windclan territory to take a piece of the rogue. He had gotten a few good marks in but his father was in trouble. Now, he raced back across the border. Offering his shoulder to his father he looked back to see Spitshine racing across the moors of windclan. "Lets get you back." Toadleap walked beside his father. Before he could get his father through the entrance his father collapsed.

Rottenbone fought it. Fought with all his might to stay concious. But the blackness took hold. And when it did. He tore into his son. Both paws full of sharp claws and a mouth full of sharp teeth attacked. His teeth went to ToadLeaps throat and his claws dug at the other tom's stomach.

ToadLeap wasn't as strong or as quick as Rottenbone. He did however, escape his father's grasp. He didn't seem to be as bad as Rottenbone. He felt a bit lethargic, but that could e because he hadn't eaten a good meal in a few days. He Panted slightly and stood away From rottenbone who seemed to slunch over in defeat. Toadleap waited one more moment and then helped his father back into the camp. "LarkSparrow!"

Glacierfrost eyed the commotion warily from the edge of the camp, keeping his expression neutral and eyes cold. Now was not the time for joking. But as the two senior warriors stumbled into the camp, his fur prickled in fear. Surely that mangy old cat hadn't managed to hurt two such fine warriors? He ran over to Rottenbone, catching his weight with his shoulder to help support the injured tom. "What happened out there?"

Windsong padded towards camp. He had been gone far too long. This was a guilt that weighed heavily on his shoulders like the physical presence of StarClans disapproval. As he drew closer, the voices and commotion of many cats reached his waiting ears. Something was happening. Something big. He had not yet heard word of the sickness spreading through RiverClan or the dangers it posed.

Carefully quickening his pace, he slid silently over the terrain like a dark blue streak. Something was wrong. The tone of conversations were enough to tell him that. As he entered camp, he surveyed the others with a critical eye. Seeing GlacierFrost supporting the wounded Rottenbone, he rushed forward to help. "Yes. What has happened?" An unusual concern spread over the emotionally distant tom as he continued to look at each cat in turn, carefully ignoring the presence of the rogue.

Sundapple was following close behind Windsong on their trip to camp. Seeing the blue tom quicken his pace, he did the same, though he was still unsure of the cause. As they entered the camp, the realization of the fact that something was definitely not right began to dawn on him.

"Duudde?" He hissed, unsure of what to do next. He chose to move over towards Windsong, GlacierFrost and the wounded tom, needing to hear what had happened. And readying himself to be a part of whatever came next.
