Regulus continued to race forward.... but with each step he took he knew that what ever had summoned him to this are was getting closer.

Just a little further....

Midnight's Whisper could not believe her luck. She'd managed to score a bite to the wings of the Kalona. The next thing she knew though she was back on the ground. Her body ached from the impact of hitting the earth. Her joy at striking back was fleeting as she found herself the target of an enraged Kalona. Shaking her head briefly Midnight tried getting to her feet before Demon's hooves came crashing down just inches from her face.

Demon's voice taunted her even as the dirt that sprayed up from the stallion's strike assaulted her eyes. Trying to clear her gaze would take effort and time. Lashing out blindly Midnight tried aiming a kick at the stallion's underbelly.

------
1 - Midnight scores a weak kick to Demon but only hits his legs. (minor)
2 - Midnight is distracted by a sound of approaching hoof beats. (miss)
3 - Midnight manages to kick Demon in the underbelly. (minor)
4 - Her energy completely used up ... Midnight finally succumbs to Demon's Black Magic. (Miss)

Demon had tried being 'nice'.... but the mare just didn't know when to quit while she was ahead. The strike to his stomach did not to sooth his internal beast, he could taste acid in his throat.

With a growl he swung around to face her once more. This time... he would show her. If you value your life you don't mess with a Kalona, especially if their name is Demon.

He lunged forward.....

Attack roll:
1- Swings his tail and strikes her several times with it. (minor)
2- Slams his large body into hers and bites her shoulder. (major)
3- Headbutts her. (mod)

[[OOC: I hope you don't mind that theres no miss, I didn't think it suited the moment, you know?]]

Regulus could see two figures ahead of him, one was clearly in distress while the other seemed to be beating them up. He was furious at that... but when he saw that the down victum was a female he found himself suddenly annoyed beyond belief. He charged forward, instinct taking over and only one thought in his mind -save the mare.

He lowered his horn and aimed for the kalona beast that was picking on the innocent.

Attack roll:
1- Misses Demon, but gets in between him and Midnight.
2- Hits him in the shoulder.
3- Scratches him as Demon moves to evade the attack.
4- Is clumpsy and trips land on Midnight instead.

Might she have had some time to actually prepare a small defense to the Kalona's enraged attack Midnight might have found herself on her feet and being able to withstand the blows she now took on her flank from Demon's tail. The sensations were akin to feeling as though her body were on fire. Kicking out feebly had no effect and Midnight, although reluctant, had to admit that suddenly she was in over her head.

It was at this moment that she heard the hoof beats striking out a hard rhythm on the frozen ground and suddenly the lashing that had been going on ceased. Her vision still blurred from the sand had difficulty in making out the shape in front of her but she could only assume it was another Soquili. The question being though was it friend or foe to her.

Getting to a position where her legs were situated under her body Midnight tried closing and opening her eyes a couple of times to see if it would help her sight. It didn't improve it by much but she was finally able to see the outline of the Soquili in front of her - a stallion and a Uni at that.

Demon grunted as the stallion -a unicorn at that- interfered with his beating of the pathetic creature now lying on the ground. It seemed she had finally learnt her place. Good.

With lazy interest he turned to the unicorn, he would be happy to fight him.... but Demon was already bored. The fact that the stallion had not managed to strike him when he had a clear opening made Demon belief he was weak and likely missed on purpose. Some ideal like -I was born to heal not hurt. He rolled his eyes at the thought. How pathetic... no wonder their kind made it so easy for Kalona's to destroy them.

He glanced back down at the clearly injured mare and laughed, "You can have her. I am done with her down....." He looked at him and smirked, "....just a disposable play thing. Aren't all mares?" Demon didn't believe in lifemating -he knew few Kalona's who did. Instead he believed in advancing his own genes, in producing worthy children.... that said Demon had no intention to breed. No need or desire for it. He was better off alone, happier that way... mares only brought..... disaster with them. Thoughts flicked to Rhea for a moment before he discarded them as easily as he would the mare on the ground.

Return to dust. He thought as he turned to leave. This time..... he wouldn't come back.

Regulus didn't bite or comment as the Kalona spoke... it was better off that way. Don't kick a gift horse in the mouth, and if the kalona was going to leave of his own free will then Regulus had no desire to change that fact. His long plaited hair dragged on the floor as he turned just long enough to watch the Kalona walk away before he looked to the mare left dying on the floor.

He could feel her pain, it riddled through his whole body.... and had always been the trick he used to find what hurt and heal it. Those that could not talk were usually the ones in the worst state. If you could cry or scream then you were still alive, still able to feel.... your body hadn't given up. He wasn't sure if that was the case to the female before him.

His eyes looked her over, he couldn't visable make out any death blows that would have caused this.... so something more? An illness perhaps? Regulus assumed that she had been like this when the Kalona had come to torment her, he knew nothing of black magic, and was happy in his denial of it.

"Shhhh.... you're safe now." He begun to coo as he lowered himself beside her and closed his eyes to focus. It seemed that everything inside of her was hurting..... including her eyes. A headache perhaps? "Can you talk to me?" He asked, already summoning forth the magic needed to begin the healing process. It was warm and tingled through his body before it reached his horn. Regulus didn't always need contact to heal... but when it was this bad it helped, directly vented his magic into her rather than allowing some to escape.

Carefully he lowered his horn to her delicate body and tried to go about his work as he spoke to her. Speaking to his patiences always helped him concentrated, it was a way to keep them engaged in something other than pain.... plus for Regulus it was one of the few times that he was not nervous. He had always found speaking to someone uninjured, with their full attention on him, daunting.... but give him an injured patient and he could talk for England and beyond. "Try and slow your breathing, shhhhhh..... there we go. Forget about that creature, he's gone. You're safe now. Shhhhh......"

Midnight's gaze although still blurred from dirt and grit tracked Demon's departure before she let her head lower to the ground. She hadn't forgotten about her "saviour" but to admit that was the role the unicorn played in this little drama was something that Midnight did not want to get around to her father. The other thing she didn't care for was the fact that even though she was still a young mare in relative terms this stallion was talking to her like she was a filly.

"Can you talk to me?"

Midnight's ears flicked forward at the sound of the stallion's words. She hadn't managed to catch what had been said before but these words registered in her mind. "I can talk. I don't think my speech is impaired any. Who are you?"

It was about this time that Midnight realized that the unicorn was placing a healing on her. That was something of a relief. She had the eerie feeling that whatever damage had been inflicted by the Kalona's "magic" had been all internal and even she didn't know what had been done. If the unicorn could fix all of that ... why not let him.

Regulus smiled at her reply, a sharp wit that was for sure... but it was a good sign considering she seemed pretty out of it moments before -at least she had to him.

He continued to do his best, his body telling him where to aim his healing due to the sensitive connection he always felt -it was as if his patients wounds became his own, for a little while at least. It could be disconcerting at times, especially when his vision would fade from a pain that wasn't his own.... but it was one of the reasons why Regulus was so good at his job.

He answered her questions easily, keeping the tone light and breezy so that the mare wasn't spooked into moving before he was done. "My name is Regulus.... I am a travelling healer." Regulus couldn't hear her thoughts.... but if he had he would have resented her thinking he was talking to her like she was a filly.... but then again, that was probably just his lack of social skills shining through.

Determined to keep her talking now... talking was good... meant she was still alive and well. "What's your name? Why was that Kalona sniffing around?" He continued working, but he had to admit that this was complicated... bacteria and virusees were natural, but this didn't seem natural... it seemed like something else..... but he didn't know what.

She could feel the healing spreading through her body. Every minute that seemed to pass Midnight could feel the strength that had been stripped away return to her body. Her ears continued to flick back and forth catching Regulus's words as he spoke to her. There was still the uncertainty as to what had exactly occurred when the Kalona was around. Letting the silence grow between patient and healer Midnight tried to get her thoughts gathered before sighing softly. Feeling that she owed the stallion something Midnight let her voice echo softly in the night air.

"I don't know exactly why that Kalona was sniffing around. All I know is that I was alone enjoying the night until he arrived. We exchanged words and I asked him to leave but he admitted that he had plans for me. I don't know what happened after but he seemingly was the cause behind the sudden weakness and lethargy that struck me down. It was then that I knew I needed to find the strength to keep fighting."

Here Midnight paused before attempting to recall Demon's exact words. "I think he said that he used a type of magic that he had. We continued to exchange words and various attacks until you showed up. I was only an experiment to him," Midnight's voice rose as she angrily tried to push herself up from the ground. The result was halfhearted as she crashed back to the ground again.

'I hate being weak.'

Muttering softly the mare realized that she still hadn't given Regulus another piece of information. "I'm sorry Regulus. I thank you for arriving when you did. My name is Midnight's Whisper."

Regulus had to concentrate, the pattern of this 'disease' was different to everything he encountered before, just like a Kalona it seemed to have teeth, digging itself in deeper and deeper in an effort to prevent removal. Regulus may have considered it worthy of study had it not had a clear intent to kill. Regulus couldn't allow anyone to die.... had it been the kalona lying dying below him he would try his best to keep him alive. It was not Regulus's place to dictate who lives and die, it was not for him to play God. The stars, the Gods themselves, lead him here for a tast..... and he had every intention of doing it.

That didn't mean he was having an easy time accepting her story, she claimed the Kalona did this? But that wasn't possible.... he had never heard if such a strange power, let alone seen it. Perhaps the mare was suffering from a fever and delussions? It had to be, for that was far easier to accept than the concept of Kalona's with magic.

He shook his head to clear his thoughts before focusing on the last of the disease. Once he was done he took a step back -not wanting to crowd her, especially after what just happened between her and a kalona moments earlier- he nodded softly, "It is a pleasure Midnight's Whisper. I think you should be ok now, can you stand? Would you like me to aid you?" Regulus was satisfied that the disease was gone, but the effects would linger for a while, she would need to rest and regain her strength.

As Regulus continued to apply his healing powers to her body Midnight let her eyes close. Beaten by a male. What would her father say to that. Groaning softly as she felt the last of the debilitating effects leave her Midnight once again tried to get to her feet. This time she was more successful as she managed to stay upright. Casting a sidelong glance at her rescuer Midnight took in the unicorn's appearance before hearing his questions.

"I can stand. Thank you for the offer of help though. I think I am still a little shaken up over the whole incident."

Midnight's gaze took in the path that the Kalona had taken before shaking her head. Going after him was out of the question. Sighing deeply her gaze swung around to Regulus again.

"How did you know to come here? It's just strange that you came upon us when you did. I'm grateful but curious."

Without the need to continue helping her and healing her Regulus found himself socially awkward once more. He had never really understood what to do in such situations.... whereas while healing he knew he needed to keep his patient calm, the calmer they were the quuicker his healing powers work and so the quicker they would part ways. Yet as he looked at the pretty mare with what appeared to be glowing runes all over his body he found himself at a loss.

Of course, he was happy she could stand. He was happy she felt stronger after so short a time, whatever had attacked her had done so on a cellular level. His eyes too followed hers to see the path the Kalona had left them on. Had she been telling the truth? Had this really been done by a Kalona? He scowled at that, he had never heard of such a thing.... but maybe, just maybe, she had been right? He continued to frown as he considered it. He would have to consult the stars and see if they knew anything, or maybe find another healer... perhaps they had experience in this sort of thing.

His thoughts were stollen from him as a question was pinged in his direction. He nodded and smiled, in her direction, she was not the first to ask this question, and Regulus suspected she probably wouldn't be the last. "The stars." Just like his healing of patiences, this was a topic he was relatively comfortable talking about. After all he knew everything he could about them. "I read them each night and they guide me to where I am needed. Today they lead me here."

He smiled nervously and looked away. He never knew what he was going to find at the end of each journey, but sure enough he always managed to find something. Someone had once asked him if that was simply because he was looking for it that he always found it.... but Regulus believed with all his heart and soul that it was the stars, messages from the Gods themselves, that showed him which way to go. After all, it was not his place to decide who lives or died. And had the Kalona been the one injured this day Regulus would have healed him as sure as he healed this mare. That was simply his way.
PostPosted: Tue Feb 08, 2011 8:07 am

Midnight listened politely to Regulus's response but her thoughts where slightly elsewhere. She was grateful to the uni for coming along and 'rescuing her' but now that she was out of peril she longed to be once more on the move. It wasn't her fault that the evening had been interrupted. The Kalona had ruined her plans of a simple graze before checking in with her family.

Nodding at Regulus the mare sighed before letting an ear twitch. Hopefully one day Midnight would exact her revenge. "It is interesting that you can read the stars that way ... or interpret what they say. I deeply thank you for coming to my aid as I wasn't sure that I would have been able to fend off further attacks."

Midnight dragged her front hoof along the ground as she thought of what she could say next. Nothing came to the forefront of her mind and it was with a slight awkwardness that she nodded silently to the stallion before turning away. It was easier to end on the thank you note than to try and initiate further conversation.

It was hard just to walk away and Midnight still felt a little off from the attack and subsequent healing. But she was proud and unable to admit defeat.
