Zeus gave the man the most disinterested, deadpan look imaginable. It was quite obvious the speech had no effect whatsoever, in jest or not. The only thing he had any interest in would be chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate.

Claire flinched when Lucas hit a terrible note, and gazed at him suspiciously. It was very obvious he'd realized something he hadn't meant to say, and that was probably when he'd mentioned how and when he got Merry. Yes, very nice save. "So you've been in Team Rocket for 30 years? What rank are you again..?" There was no way he could be here for 30 years and be anything less than an elite. No, it was obvious he was hiding something, and Claire was very curious to find out exactly what that was.

He realized he had been playing the same note over and over again and began to fiddle with retuning the instrument, if only to avoid direct eye contact. Damned if he could lie to someone when looking them straight in the face. He could barely lie to someone when looking elsewhere, or over the telephone, or in a written letter. "Uh, well, what rank do you think I am?" It was a lot easier to lie if someone else said the words proper.

"Well," Claire started, leaning back a bit as she continued to pet Snow, "if you were an elite or higher I would have known about you before meeting you, and would have at least recognized your name." Upon arriving in the Kodo base she had immediately familiarized herself with both the layout of the building and all of its members ranked elite or higher.

"That leaves either trainee, grunt, or agent," she went on to explain, watching him closely for any sort of reaction. The constant playing of the same note didn't escape her notice either. "After 30 years I would say at least elite would be most likely, but since that isn't the case - perhaps agent." Even though that wasn't too likely, an elite would make more sense after such a long period of time. Heck, it'd be more likely if he was up helping the boss after 30 years. "But, checking the rank of any member is easily verifiable with a computer." Simply put, if he lied about what his rank was, she would find out soon after and call him on his lie. If he even lied about it, that is.

Snow wriggled momentarily. His human was being weird, but being petted was so rare and wonderful...

Lucas laughed, a single, bark-like sound. "Guess you caught me," he surrendered. "Yeah, I'm a grunt. More than forty years old and a grunt. That's your cue to laugh, if you want to. I laugh about it myself all the time." As if to prove his words, a chuckle accompanied them. It really was rather ridiculous. He was even older than the Kodo branch's elites. Hell, he had been involved in organized crime for longer than they had been alive!

Zeus blinked up in surprise at Lucas when he laughed so oddly - why was this human acting so... odd? He was weird.

Claire declined to laugh, instead choosing to continue watching his reactions. "So where were you thirty years ago?" It was a simple question, asked after he'd finished his chuckling, as if the whole thing was some sort of joke. There was no way he would be a grunt for thirty years. No way at all. "Even if you were the worst grunt in the history of Team Rocket, there's no way they'd keep you at the same rank for so long. Were you really at Team Rocket for thirty years, or were you somewhere else?" That actually would make a great deal more sense than if he was in Team Rocket for that long. If he'd been in another organization, he could very well have gotten high in the business ladder before coming to Team Rocket.

He couldn't help but think it would have been better if she had laughed. The whole ordeal was starting to feel something like an interrogation. "Mmm, thirty years ago, I guess I was in Sinnoh." He felt Merry's ribbon-like tail appear on his other shoulder, wrapping around the back of his neck to remind him of her presence. Worse came to worst, the Chimecho did know Hypnosis...

Lucas considered her second question in silence before he found a response, "Team Rocket's got no branch in Sinnoh." It was a roundabout way to put it, but it answered the question.

Unfortunately for Lucas, Claire didn't laugh at much - and the conversation was quickly turning to something she could never laugh about, even if she were the type of person that laughed at practically everything. No, it was her turn to feel awkward. She shifted uncomfortably, violet eyes flitting to the floor, then the window and to a couple other places that Lucas wasn't sitting near.

She didn't need his last statement to know exactly where he was so many years ago. It was almost hard for her, but she forced her gaze back onto his face. Her expression wasn't so much confused as it was searching - as if she was trying to remember something that was flitting just out of reach of her memory, and that staring in a particular spot would magically enable her to recall the thought. "Galactic?" She asked quietly; it was obvious she wasn't trying to remember the name of the team - she knew it very well - she had yet to remember what was so hard to grasp.

She pulled her hand away from Snow then, brows furrowing slightly as her racing thoughts grew progressively more troubling. "So," she began awkwardly, rubbing the fabric of the sling that held her arm close to her chest in a subconscious need to fiddle with something while in a nervous state, "were you... I mean, did you happen to leave Galactic.. perhaps.. a few months ago?" She had yet to recall the thing fluttering just out of reach, and she continued looking at him with a mixture of morbid curiosity, nervousness, and maybe a twinge of fear as well. Obviously her thoughts weren't very pleasant.

It was peculiar how her demeanor changed, and Lucas watched carefully as his own apprehension turned to a vague suspicion. He gave a slow nod in response to her quiet word, a mumbled "that's the one" furthering his affirmation. He recognized the expression on Claire's face - it was one of someone trying with everything they had to remember something, an expression he had spied in the mirror so many times throughout his muddled life. Nothing could have prepared him for her next words, though, and concern for the well-being of the expensive hobby in his lap was all that kept him from leaping to his feet.

"You mean--" i won't remember this when i wake up... His mind immediately turned to the little note he had found in his pocket, the only clue had had as to why he was on that ship. 'Mutiny' and 'a huge falling out' were the descriptions written on the paper, but they explained nothing. "Do you know what happened?" His voice was desperate, bordering on frantic, as though Claire would vanish at any moment, taking all her clues with her.

It was a very unfamiliar feeling for Claire, one she didn't find pleasant in the slightest. However she was completely unprepared for his sudden question and his tone of voice, and a distinct look of confusion was on her face. "You... don't know?" How could he not know? Why would he have left if he didn't even know? It wasn't like someone would just defect for the fun of it.

"How do you not know what happened? Did you just happen to forget or something?" She asked with a sudden laugh, her tone slightly accusing. How? How did he just.. not know? It seemed entirely too improbable.

Her eyes suddenly narrowed suspiciously, and the only thing inhibiting her from jumping up was her broken arm. Except, she jumped up anyway. As fast as she could with her temporary disability, that is, and aimed a glare at Lucas. "Is this some sort of trick? Are you just trying to fool me to get information from me? Is that it?" For some reason, she had jumped to the conclusion Lucas just wanted to find out probably the most interesting event that happened at Galactic - but then, how would he know about it? They probably hadn't been too keen on advertising the event, so probably only people from Galactic would know, but... but... how could he just not know?

His owner's sudden outburst startled Zeus and he jumped up as well, flicking his ears back and frowning at her behavior and sudden 360 in attitude. What was going on...?

Snow, frightened by the tension and the sudden change in the Nice Lady's demeanor, took her distraction as a chance to scurry away. His own human's side didn't seem any warmer a sanctuary, though, and so he found himself back at the window, watching from beneath a brow furrowed in worry.

Claire's sudden movements and tone of voice caught Lucas's attention, and in one motion he had set aside the guitar and risen into a defensive pose. But instead of attacking, she spoke, and the dark mask that had settled upon his features quickly gave way to his former confusion.

How did he forget? If he knew that, perhaps he would be able to remember. But he didn't, and he couldn't, and he was left floundering for some way to assure her that his want for information was born of no ill intent.

"...Tarvos." If Claire was what she seemed to be, then she would know exactly to whom that name belonged.

Her expression remained accusing, glaring at him and her body tensed when he rose - but he didn't move. Instead, he spoke one word - a name - and it visibly changed her whole demeanor almost immediately. Violet eyes widened and the accusing look totally vanished, completely replaced with the same nervous look as before and a more prominent one of fear. The clouded, confused look she'd had before had also vanished - it appeared she remembered finally. Or perhaps, had been handed the memory on a silver platter.

She stared at him nervously, the fingers on her right hand fidgeting nervously at her side, and her mouth opened slightly as if she was about to speak. She closed it and her eyes flitted behind him before she turned, as if making sure there was no one around. Obviously, she didn't feel comfortable at all with this topic, a secret she closely guarded.

Her hand balled into a fist as her gaze shifted back to him, and she seemed to regain some of her composure. Such a nervous, uncertain attitude was not something she enjoyed showing at all. "An uprising," she said suddenly, searching his face for a reaction. "I don't know who started it, but a bunch of people in Galactic joined to take out the boss and the commanders - I forget why. I didn't join, but my friend did, so I was technically a sympathizer. In short, the revolt was a complete failure, and they already started getting rid of traitors and sympathizers by the time I heard it'd started. I immediately packed up and left right after that." She was still fidgeting with her right hand, unable to use her left still, pausing to consider her next words. "I think they didn't like how the boss was running things anymore, or the new goals he was setting or something - she didn't tell me all of the specifics."

Lucas's jaw was set, eyes narrowed in a combination of rapt attention and cold realization. "Ugh..." He turned slightly and leaned against the wall, pulling his glasses away from his face and pinching the bridge of his nose. It was everything he had feared it had been. He was quiet for a few long moments, and the silence was eventually broken by the sound of his fist striking against the wall behind him. "What in the world did they think they would accomplish? The elites alone would have been able to put them down, and they wanted to take out the commanders? The boss?" It was saddening and infuriating all at once. Why hadn't they said anything to him? If he had known, perhaps he could have talked some sense into them before it was too late. How many perfectly promising young lives had been extinguished in their reckless folly...?

He breathed out a long, quiet breath. Being frustrated about something that had happened months prior would accomplish nothing. He unclenched his hand and moved it to pat Merry's side, and she chimed in response.

"...I'm glad you got out of it okay, at least."

Claire remained silent after her explanation, carefully studying the man's face. Judging from his reaction, apparently Lucas had more friends than she had there. She'd felt bad about the whole thing, of course, especially for her friend - but they all knew what they were getting into when they signed up for the revolt. Didn't they? They had to..

Then again, her friend didn't tell her everything before asking her to join, so maybe not everyone did...?

Her brows furrowed at the thought and she quickly cast it aside. She had stifled these thoughts and memories long ago, stuffing them into a box and shoving it into an abandoned closet in the back of her mind. The attempt to forget them had obviously failed. The memories were just beginning to fade, and now she'd encountered someone that inadvertently brought all of them rushing back to the forefront of her mind.

It was far from pleasant.

"You too," she replied with a nod. Her brows were still knitted together, obviously still confused about something. "So why... how did you not know..? I don't understand.." How could this man, this elite from Galactic, have defected due to the event but didn't know what it was? How? The thought was incredibly hard to wrap her head around, and seemed nearly impossible. Did his friends just shove him onto a boat when he was asleep or something, so he never knew why he was gone? No, then he would've tried to go back... Trying to figure it out made her head spin.

He dragged a hand across his face, rubbing briefly at his eyes, and drew a breath. "'I won't remember this when I wake up, but there was a mutiny. I'm on this boat so I wouldn't get caught up in the mess. There was a huge falling out in the base and my rank will make it difficult to go back now. I should keep on towards wherever this boat is headed and forget I was ever a part of Galactic.'" He had read the message so many times in the past few months that he had inadvertently memorized it. "I came to on a ship, and there was a scrap of paper with that written on it in my pocket. It was in my handwriting, but..." He sighed in frustration and rubbed at his neck.

"You know, I've been forgetting things all my life. 40 years old and I've only got enough memories for 20. It's always the important stuff, too. Stuff like... well, like this." He turned his palms out with a helpless shrug.

She had been very tempted to run after explaining, to flee and go hide somewhere in a futile attempt to escape from the past. It made her nervous how much she was afraid of what happened, how scared she was it would come back to haunt her some day. But running from problems was ridiculous and ineffective, so she remained where she stood. Plus, she was curious.

She frowned at his explanation, quoting a note he'd written to himself... This was... quite odd. "I see." However, it did explain why he couldn't remember, why he had the desperate look in his eyes when he realized she knew what happened... Maybe he just wanted to know? Or know again, that is, because apparently he'd known at some point, and then... Completely forgot, as if it had never happened.

Except it did.

"Have you seen a doctor about it?" She couldn't help but ask, her expression one of mild confusion with a hint of curiosity. He probably had, but she still felt the need to ask. Even if he had, she couldn't help but think he should see one again, just in case they could help even the slightest bit.
