"Great." Planting hadn't really been that bad of an experience. "That's probably the main reason. People would much rather see dragons than whers."
Noting she was ready to leave, Relys headed out of the Mystweed room. He watched her close up. A soft whistle brought Relysk over to his side. "If you hold out your hand slowly, he'll sniff it."
He gave a firm mental impression to the wher that the girl was friend, not foe.
Reylsk rose to his feet when the wherhandler stepped back out into the night. A familiar signal brought the wher to his side. He accepted his handler's indication that the girl was harmless and memorized her heat pattern. While doing so he waited for the proffered hand.

Lilias hesitantly held out her hand for the blue wher to smell. She shivered slightly not from fear but from the difference in air temperature compared to the greenhouse. She glanced at Relys to see if she had done it right.

Relysk whuffed at the proffered hand a few times then withdrew. He would use both heat signature and scent to identify the girl next time.
Relys smiled and nodded. She had done surprisingly well for her first encounter. Not the same could be said for everyone. "Shall I walk you back to your quarters now?"

"Yes please Relys," she said, "Oh wait, I want you to have this," she proceeded to pull out of her pocket a hand - sized, carved wooden fish. It had a wide flat body and was one of the common fish species found in the three lakes. Lilias while not actually knowing th especific name liked to call them "flat fish." But in reality they were skinny *(being more flat like an angelfish than a flounder)* fish not so much flat. She shyly handed it to him. " I have a carving habit and thought you might like it." she said smiling at him. "Consider it a gift for escorting me home with your handsome wher."

Relys had started to turn down the call when she said yes, but then turned back in surprise. Gingerly he reached to accept the fish. He turned it over in his hands to examine it.
"This is very nice. Thank you." Relys smiled as she called Relysk handsome. The wher knew he was being spoken of and arched his neck as he walked.
"Nothing wrong with that habit. In fact if you might like to earn a couple of marks, these might make neat novelty items. I'll show this to the Caravan Master and see what he thinks about getting a few." He grinned and shrugged.

"That would be great, i have quite a few built up as that is what I usually carve. Although I did make a carving of bronze Plexith for D'lin, so dragons are not impossible, would you like one of Relysk? I could try." she offered. Glancing at the wher as they walked, so she could remember his lines later when she had time to practice her carving. "I do want to expand my list of carvable creatures as eventually all the fish get boring no matter what creative shapes I make." she had a flat look on her face, obviously fished out at times.

"Really? I be he liked that." He grinned. "If you wanted to give it a go I wouldn't say no." Relys wondered how the carving of Plexith came out.
A laugh escaped him, "true that. Well good luck on those then. I look forward to seeing the results." He heard Nald chirp in his ear and had an idea. "Have you tried flits too?"

"Not yet but thats intriguing, although i need one to stay still long enough for me to memorize their lines, it's easier on bigger creatures because they don't move as fast." she grinned but with as many flits as are in this Weyr I will try."

"I'm sure we can get Nald to pose for you." He gave her a wink. In fact he was training the little flit to be an invisible sentry. That is, if the blue flit would hold still. He loved to be out ahead scouting and stuff.
Nald heard his name and trilled. Relysk chirped back to him.

"In that case I would love to try," she answered him with a smile. They were almost the candidate housing now and she turned toward him to say goodbye for the night. " Thank you Relys, for helping me with the plants and for escorting me home, the Weyr is safer with you and Relysk here." she nodded at the wher. She held out her hand for a handshake and said "I guess I will see you around then? More so if I am to practice carving flits, I think I will be able to do one of Relysk now."

(Candidates all reside together in the candidate bunks. No individual housing for them.)
"You're welcome Lilias." He gave a laugh. "I'm not part of the Weyr actually. We're with the Camran Caravan. It's sort of habit to prowl around at night." Relys gave a chuckle.
He took the proffered hand to shake. "Certainly. Good to hear. Stop by my wagon when its done and when you want to look at Nald. Good night." Together he and the wher turned to fade into the night with Nald zipping ahead.

She waved him off, into the night. She was happy she had made and new friend and met her first watchwher.
