Ainsley just wouldn't let up on the hold she had on the ice dancer no matter how cold Gwenliana's felt against her own. She was hoping that if she didn't let go of her dear friend then she wouldn't be able to slip away from her and disappear. She didn't want Gwenliana to go. She wanted them to be friends forever! She wanted to learn how to dance more with her and finally learn how to pirouette and arabesque properly. She wanted to be able to play in the snow with her and laugh as Octavian Oswald tries to eat the snow by making a face plant into a snow mound! How could they do that if she disappeared and left?

She could feel the ice dancer all around her although she couldn't entirely see all of her. It would have been better if she hadn't looked and realized her friend had no arms or legs but if the child didn't look now she would only regret it. How could she not watch her friend until the very end? Her thoughts all stopped though when Gwenliana spoke though and her head looked back up towards her. She felt Gwenliana hugging her tightly and Ainsley made a small squeak. She thought she was a fine princess?

"But... I couldn't protect you! How can I be a fine princess?" She sobbed lightly.

xxxxxGwenliana held Ainsley for what seemed like ages. She recalled all of the fun things they had done together, much like what Ainsley was probably doing now. Out of all of the images Gwenliana had- things like Ainsley smiling and doing a pirouette, Ainsley introducing Prince Octavian- none of them stood out as much as Ainsley's pained face during the great battle, mere minutes ago. Using that as her drive, Gwenliana knew what she had to do. She had to tell Ainsley goodbye.

xxxxxWith only her bust left, Gwenliana sighed and said, "Octavian Oswald? ... Well he'll just have to look after you. More importantly, you'll have to look after him." Biting her lip, Gwenliana said the words she feared would upset Ainsley the most. "Yes, I'm here now dear, but ... well soon I won't be. So listen here." Very matter of factly she released her embrace for a moment to look Ainsley straight in the eye. "Now this is something you must never forget," she said, very sternly, in all seriousness, "You are a princess, and you must going on being one." Gwenliana assumed that didn't mean much to Ainsley at the time, but perhaps when she was older she would understand all the precautions that came with it. "And look at me, whenever it snows, I'll be there. Maybe not in this ... ah ... form? But I promise you, I will be there."

xxxxxGwenliana returned to her embrace with Ainsley for one last moment. Feeling the very life drizzling away from her now, she used the last of her strength to whisper into Ainsley's ear, "And Ainsley dear ... I love you very much." With that last utterance, the magic that had sustained her disappeared all together. The last of her existence, the last of Gwenliana the snow dancer disappeared into the snow, leaving nothing but the silence of a quiet, peaceful snowfall behind. Perhaps there had been a raging blizzard moments before, perhaps there hadn't. With the calm serenity that overtook the small, moonlit night, one couldn't really be sure. The wind picked up a little, spreading the last of Gwenliana's snowflakes flying everywhere. And as if a true, final goodbye, one snowflake landed directly on Ainsley's nose.

Gwenliana had been the child's first girl friend. They hadn't known each other very long but to Ainsley it didn't matter. A friend was not something defined by the time given to them but the emotions that grew from it. The emotions she had shared with the snow dancer over the short period of time were great. Love had blossomed and a great friendship had been born in the icy world that Gwenliana had fallen into. The child never thought it would end, that Gwenliana would suddenly not be there anymore and the impending goodbye was not something she had foreseen. How could she ever have imagined this would happen. How could she cope with the idea so quickly. She couldn't, and although she realized her friend was disappearing before her very eyes she had this hope that everything would be okay.

Her eyes were hopeful as Gwenliana spoke once more, her eyes looking up to follow her. She found relief when she was able to look at the snow dancer, realizing she was still there. Yes. She had not left her! Ainsley knew it, she knew Gwenliana wouldn't leave her! She found herself snugging closer to the snow dancer, feeling her against her arms. She was here. She was here. They would be friends forever.

"Yes, I'm here now dear, but ... well soon I won't be. So listen here."

No, no! Ainsley shook her head as Gwenliana released her grip of her, reaching forward to try and reach her again as her eyes met Gwenliana's with concern before looking at Octavian Oswald. She found herself standing in front of the snow dancer, listening to her. She didn't understand what Gwenliana meant about having to go on being one, but she nodded her head. She didn't understand but she'd remember. She'd remember. She would never forget the night her friend was saying her goodbyes and soon Ainsley found her teary eyes looking up at Gwenliana again. The snow? Gwenliana would come visit her every year?

"You promise?" She whispered, trying to wipe the tears from her eyes with the sleeve of her coat before Gwenliana returned to embrace her once more. She hugged back tightly and the strength she had been holding onto soon crumbled and immediately the child cried out as her sobs took over completely as the magic that held Gwenliana together disappeared all together, leaving Ainsley's arms empty. She was forced to stared at what had become of Gwenliana: snowflakes. The child couldn't believe it, and her empty, tear-filled eyes stared at her empty arms. Everything all made sense now, but she couldn't bring herself to stop crying.

A kiss goodbye as a single snowflake had landed on the child's nose. It tickled. "G-gwenliana?" The child said between a sob before she had a chance to realize it. She tried to look at the snowflake that had landed on her nose, as if she would see a smiling face looking back at her. There was no smile, but there was an unusual warmth that would soon cause a small smile to fall on the child's face. It felt as if she was being hugged and the child gave out a couple sniffles. She looked around at the falling snow as she whispered, "I love you too."

The snowflake lingered, and eventually melted to joined the tears that fell down the child's face. Without Gwenliana there with the child, it had become quiet and the sobs of the child slowly found themselves contained to her heart as she stared at the ground where the snow sat, small drops of tears joining the snowflakes below. Eventually she would go inside but for now she just stood there where Gwenliana had said goodbye. She hugged Octavian Oswald and whispered to him, "D-don't worry... s-she's not gone for good. She promised. She'll be back."
