The amused glint in Megg's eyes wilted when she caught the nervous sound in Kai's voice. Really? Was there no one who got that she was joking? They needed to clarify it? It was times like these where Megg wished that she had a NORMAL house, and a NORMAL family - she imagined that people would be less inclined to become nervous around her if life had been like that.
But then she wouldn't have Shade...so perhaps it wasn't all bad. She wouldn't trade the little fuzzball in her lap for the world, honestly.

"Yes. I was joking." Megg's lip quirked upwards into a slight smirk, trying to seem more amused than disappointed with the young man's reaction. It wasn't his fault that the mansion had a bit of a bad reputation. "It's not all that exciting there though, honestly. It's just a big house, that's all." The young woman glanced up as a waitress brought them their food and was soon munching on her fries. "My Dad IS a scientist though."

"You can never be sure with creepy, supposed to be haunted mansions." Kai grinned sheepishly, accepting her joke, and embarrassed that he had actually needed to ask. But, like he had said, you could never be sure. There had been reports of strange lights, noises, and even creatures up at the mansion. He supposed the creature bit could have been Shade...but why? He was adorable, in the teddy bear sort of way.

"What's he do? Medicine? Construction? Or is it top secret?" Kai asked, biting into his burger. He could see, now, why she'd been disallowed to own a pet. Not that he saw what was wrong with a fish, or even a lizard. But, it would probably get in the way of any equipment her dad had.

"I suppose so, yeah." Megg chuckled a bit as she munched on one of the chicken fingers. "It's not really that creepy inside though." At least, it wasn't to her - she wasn't entirely certain if the inside of the mansion would be considered to be creepy to other people. Her room most certainly was not creepy though - too many video game and anime posters for that.

"It's medical science, mostly." Yes - medical. She supposed that it could be considered as that, what with then having brought an entirely new race to life and all. "I don't really know much about it other than that though - I'm not particularly good at science." Actually, she was terrible at it. She'd barely managed to pass the class in high school - it was kind of ironic, considering that Nigel was her foster father.

Shade, meanwhile, was growing rather bored - he'd finished his fries rather quickly, and was currently glancing around the cafe for something more interesting to do. He found it in the shape of a shiny keychain, which was dangling from some woman's purse. Quietly, the little boy slipped from his mother's lap and proceeded to toddle off into the crowd, following after the shiny trinket. His departure didn't go unnoticed by his mother however, though she quickly lost sight of him in the busy cafe.

"s**t!" Megg quickly stood up, trying to figure out where her son had taken off. If he got outside again, then he could be seriously hurt! But what if she went outside, and he was still inside, and someone picked him up? Not everyone was as nice as Kai was, after all. "I-I gotta find him!" Which way had he taken off in?!
PostPosted: Tue Jan 25, 2011 8:21 am

"Medical, huh? Well, that's cool..." He chuckled as she admitted she was no good at science, and nodded. "I know the feeling. My Dad's a physicist, and my mom's a good cook, but I suck at both things." He grinned, and shook his head. "I don't think skills are hereditary."

The light-heartedness of the situation disappeared, however, when Shade toddled off into the crowd. Kai saw him go, and jumped to his feet, his height giving him the advantage to see the little boy's pointed ears disappear out the door between an old woman and her large bottomed friend. He was all but lost in their skirts, his tail the only thing Kai could see.

"You might find this mean, but you should REALLY get him a leash!" He said, already hurrying through the thick crowd, and out the door. He didn't, however, see Shade when he got out there. There was no sign of the women when he reached the street, nor were there any people freaking out to give him any sort of indication as to where the kid could be.
He was gone; disappeared into thin air.

Dread grew, and he spun around slowly, calling out for the boy.
"Shaaade...Shade! I've got something yummy for you. A treat! Do you want a treat? Just come out, okay, and I'll give you a treat!" Well, he sounded like a total ******** creeper; but if it found Megg's kid, it would be worth it.

The reason that Kai couldn't see Shade outside was quite simple, though no one would ever know how he'd managed to get himself into such a situation - that situation being that the little boy was currently above Kai, peering down at the young man. The impling child giggled from his seat on the awning above Kai head, his tail swishing back and forth with delight. Really, how had he managed to get up there in such a short amount of time?

"T'eat?" Shade asked, eyes widening with delight at the prospect. "Wan' t'eat, wan' t'eat!" The child squealed with delight, leaning over the edge of the awning to giggle at Kai. He, of course, saw absolutely nothing wrong with his current situation, and was perfectly happy sitting up there with Snore, a big grin spread across his face - to say that this was a strange situation would have been an understatement, needless to say.

The awning.
Holy crap.
The awning.

...How the ******** had he gotten on the AWNING?!

Kai couldn't help but stare up at the crafty infant in disbelief, running a hand through his hair and gripping his ponytail, tugging on it as he tried to think of a way that the boy could have gotten up there; but, no, he couldn't think of anything.
Perhaps, however, some secrets were best left unknown.

"Yeah! Treat! But just..just keep away from the edge!" Kai said, holding up his hands as he tried to find a way to get up to the kid. The awning wasn't strong enough to hold the both of them, he figured, so...
"And don't bounce around, okay? We gotta bring you back to Mommy before you get the treat...I've gotta get you down..." He moved slowly to the side of the building when he was sure Shade wasn't going to fall to his doom, stepping up on the small ledge near the door. The bricks of the building were pretty big, and had large grooves between them; just big enough for his fingers. Thank god, he thought, the awning was only a few feet higher than he could reach.
Setting his jaw, he took a breath; then heaved himself up, until he could reach the windowsill and put his foot on it. People began to mutter and point, unable to see why the strange man was scaling the building, but he ignored them until he could see above the awning, fingers jammed tight in the crevice there.

"C'm'over here, okay Shade? Just...crawl up here...you.." He pulled one of his hands out, his feet balanced on the top sill of the window, and reached out toward the furry baby.

Shade didn't understand the danger involved with what he was doing. As far as he was concerned, nothing bad would come of him sitting up on the awning - and if it did, his Mommy would come save him! She always saved him from getting hurt!

"'Kaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!" Shade giggled, apparently not understanding that Kai was upset; he thought that the man below was acting pretty funny! The little boy clapped his hand hands, tail flicking behind him as he watched Kai run around to the side of the building. The child tilted his head, watching the grown-up's antics with childish amusement.

Kai was very good at climbing, the boy decided - perhaps he'd be fun to play with! Yes, they could have lots of fun at with Mommy! The little boy grinned at the very thought as he watched the young man climb the wall - soon, Kai was standing on the windowsill next to the awning, trying to coax the baby to come over. "T'eat af'er dis?" Shade asked as he shifted himself onto his hands and knees, starting to crawl towards Kai's outstretched hand. "T'eat, righ'?"

By this point, Megg was down below, watching with baited breath as Kai tried to get Shade down from the awning. She'd probably never know for the life of her how the little impling had managed to get himself stuck up there, and she wasn't sure if she WANTED to know - she just hoped that Kai could get her son down safely. She'd almost called out to Shade when she'd first spotted the toddler on the awning, but had managed to refrain from doing so - the last thing she wanted was surprise the baby and cause him to fall.

Which meant that right now, all she could do was watch and hope that Kai could get Shade down safely. It was, perhaps, the first she'd REALLY prayed in a long time.

"Yeah...treat after this...just come a bit closer..." He beckoned him ever closer, and as soon as Shade was in reach, he snatched him up, somehow managing to wrestle him off of the awning and keep himself up with only one hand devoted to each activity. It was only when he had Shade, securely held on his shoulder, that he realized an entirely new dilemma.

How the ******** was he supposed to climb down?

He looked down, spotting Megg a small ways away. She looked so worried..
Gritting his teeth, he very carefully began to climb down.
He was almost there. He almost made it.
And then his hand slipped, the brick he'd been using as a handhold falling out beneath his fingers. He yelled, and curled around Shade as they fell through the air, pain exploding in his back as he met hard, cruel, and very cold concrete - they'd hit the ground.
His back was on fire, and he was pretty sure he was bleeding. He was also pretty dizzy. Had he hit his head? He hoped not.
Didn't matter right now, though. What did matter was the infant in his arms.

Very carefully, he uncurled himself from around Shade, almost dreading to look. Was he okay? Was he safe?
He stared into the baby's golden eyes for a moment, deathly silent; they both were. Then, he started to wail.
Crying. He must have been okay. Scared, but okay. Relieved, he let his head drop to the ground, and held Shade up off of his chest slightly.

"Got 'im." He said weakly.

He'd gotten Shade. A wave of relief flew through Megg as Kai lifted her son up from the awning - everything would be okay now. The young man would just have to climb down from the ledge, and then everything would be just fine.
And then something went wrong. Megg's stomach twisted as Kai slipped, and she'd bolted over before he'd even hit the ground. Blue eyes widened with dread when he struck the ground, and she knew that he was badly hurt before she'd even knelt down next to him. Shade had begun to bawl, probably terrified from the fall, but the brunette didn't think that he was hurt - Kai had curled around the baby, effectively shielding him from concrete, thank God. Unfortunately, that meant that Kai had also taken the entirety of the impact with the ground.

"s**t! Oh God, don't move! I'm going to call you an ambulance!" Megg took her wailing son from Kai, figuring that it probably wasn't very good for the young man to be holding anything in his condition, and quickly flipped her cellphone out of her pocket, dialing 9-1-1. By this time, a crowd had gathered around him, many people sounding distressed and confused about what they'd just witnessed - Megg paid them no mind though. All that mattered right now was getting Kai some help. After a quick talk with the nice lady at the end of the line, she was informed that an ambulance was on the way, and to stay next to the victim until they arrived.
As if she'd leave him anyway.

"An ambulance will be here soon; j-just sit tight, okay?" God, it was times like this that Megg wished she'd been born with some form of magical ability. At least then she'd be able to help! Biting her lip, Megg bounced Shade lightly to try to calm the crying infant as she knelt on the sidewalk next to Kai. "It'll be alright." She wasn't sure who she was trying to assure more - herself, or the injured boy in front of her. She could see blood soaking through his clothes and shifted Shade in her arms so she could reach down, pressing her hands to one of the wounds in an attempt to stave off the bleeding. She felt so...helpless! There was absolutely nothing that she could do to make this better.

"T...T-Thank you for getting him...oh God, I'm so sorry!" She was going to make this up to him - assuming that he didn't die, anyway. This was great - the first boy to EVER talk to her, and he nearly gets himself killed trying to save her baby.
Worst. Luck. Ever.

Kai waved her hands off of him as she began to panic, pushing his own hand against the wound on his side. He'd cut it on something when he'd fallen. Here was to the hope that it was the worst wound he had. He could still feel his feet, though, so that was a good sign, wasn't it? He couldn't be paralyzed if he could still feel his feet.

"Calm...down." He grinned a bit, leaning his head back and closing his eyes. "This's nothin'. I've had worse. 'Sides. You're scarin' the baby." He chuckled. "I take it he's okay, then? No bumps or bruises...?" It would certainly suck if he had hurt Shade, after all of that.

"I...have a very hard time believing that falling seven feet is 'nothing'." Despite saying this, Megg was partially relieved by the fact that Kai was joking about this - hopefully, joking meant that he wasn't too badly hurt. It didn't look like he was dying, at the very least.

The brunette looked down at the whimpering baby in her arms, checking him over quickly. After a moment, she nodded in confirmation - yes, Shade was fine. She couldn't see any injuries on the little boy. "N-No bumps or bruises...he's okay..." Thank God. She'd been so scared when she'd seen Shade up on that awning. How had he gotten up there in the first place??? She couldn't even begin to imagine how a TODDLER of all things would have been able to climb up to an awning without anyone noticing. "Thank you for...for getting him down..." Megg looked up as she heard the sound of sirens coming towards the cafe - the ambulance, most likely.

The white vehicle pulled up next to the small venue, and the crowd that had gathered around them quickly parted as paramedics rushed over, quickly moving Kai into the vehicle - after a bit of persuasion, they allowed Megg inside as well. The whole ride didn't take long, and they soon arrived at the hospital.
It turned out that Kai didn't have any real serious injury - just some major bruising, some cuts and scratches, and a nasty slice on his side. After patching the young man up and prescribing him with some VERY strong painkillers, the doctor said that Kai was free to go. Megg, of course, stayed with him the entirety of the time.

"Will...you be able to get home alright?" the young woman asked, adjusting the now-sleeping infant in her arms. "I can help you get there if you want." It wasn't like she didn't know where he lived, after all. Actually, she intended to go with him, whether he liked it or not - the asking was just to be polite.
PostPosted: Sun Jan 30, 2011 12:02 pm

Kai stayed relatively complacent through the whole ordeal, nodding and going ahh when asked like a good little boy. He'd never really loved Hospitals - they smelled funny - and so his philosophy had always been to obey and get out of there faster than if he protested and drew the experience out for everyone involved.

He was happy, though, for Megg's company.

"Home? Psh. Home's....fine. Yeah. I can do it." Very heavily sedated from his stitches, which numbered in the double ditches, Kai leaned on the crutch they'd given him to alleviate pressure on his side. "'Sides. I c'n hitch-hike. Yes? We're good." It was probably best that she went with him. Letting him wander around like...well, this, probably wasn't a good idea.

"...yeah, I think I'm gonna help you get home today." Because Megg most certainly wasn't going to let him walk home all by himself. "We'll take a bus to your place, okay? I have some change that we can use." Carefully, she began guiding the drugged young man to the bus stop and helped him to sit down on the bench when they got there. They waited for the bus for perhaps 5 minutes before the vehicle finally pulled up, and Megg helped Kai aboard.

"We'll be home soon, alright?" she said as she took a seat next to him, cradling Shade in her other arm. "I'll even help you get up to your apartment." She hoped that he'd be okay after that. Would his landlady be able to help him after that? And what about his dogs? Would he be okay to look after them alright? She didn't think too long about it, because she soon realized that it was time to pull the bus cord.
"C'mon, we're here." she said, helping him to stand once the bus had stopped.
PostPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 10:52 am

A bus had never felt quite so much like a roller coaster before. Perhaps it was the drugs, but it all felt as if it was swirling and bouncing and jerking around like some twisted six flag's creation set loose upon the city streets. He was thankful when he followed Megg off the bus, looking blearily up at his apartment. He could see Dolly, still wearing the Christmas bow he'd tied around her collar on the holiday, perched on his windowsill. She yapped, and disappeared, presumably to fetch the other dogs. He heard them before he saw them, heading for the set of metal stairs on the side of the building that lead to his door.

"You can stop here..." Kai smiled at Megg, leaning on the railing as the dogs got louder. "They'll maul you if you come in. I haven't walked them yet, so they're pretty excited..." He wasn't, however, GOING to walk them. Maybe the neighbours would do it. If he was lucky.
"I'll...see you around?"

Megg looked up at one of the building's windows as she heard the sound of a bark - the dog that had made the noise was already gone though. The brunette helped Kai over to the metal stairs, only stopping when the young man said that he could make the rest of the way on his own. She was still worried, but she hoped that his landlady would help him now if he needed it - though, Kai HAD said that she was kind of crazy.

"Yeah, I'll see you around; hopefully, you won't fall off any awnings next time." Megg smiled at Kai sheepishly. "Get better soon, okay...?" She sincerely hoped that he would. She still felt bad for getting him hurt.
And as she made her way home, she found herself concocting ways as to make all of this up to him.
