Sefas Minos
Alchemist
Location: Surrounding area of Tenepolis, En Route to the Ebon Fields

Leaving Tenepolis, Sefas seemed to have a visible unsettling feeling with being away from that city... The Black Fields were nothing to simply shirk off by any means, but this was something else... Rather than the simple fear of impending attack that is normal for someone traveling the wastes, there was a different kind of dread surrounding him. This was the kind of dread that someone carried when they felt like they were being watched by someone or something unsavory. The silence was perhaps one of the most unnerving things about this region of the world, though...

For lack of a better word, most of the Wastes were dead. No creatures stirring in the sand, no birds flying overhead, and even the wind seemed to have no voice in this desolate wasteland. Sefas looked at the map and saw what looked like a poem at the bottom of the map... It seemed to be already part of it, written across the Umbral Mountain region, each letter seeming to be part of a mountain...

"Beware, ye, who dare dissent,
ye who'd dare go astray
Beware, ye, the southern wastes
That ne'er see light of day

Forgotten by Father Sun
Unseen by Mother Moon
All of us sent in exile here
Are sentenced to our doom

Our noble hosts, the Shadow Men
Who aid us through this time
Are they, themselves, paying the price
For their ancestors' past crime

So Beware, who dare dissent
ye who dare go astray
Beware, ye, the Southern Wastes
That ne'er see light of day."

Sefas seemed even further unnerved by what appeared to be a mocking and belated warning to those who would be exiled in future generations. It seems nothing good did come out of the Black Wastes, and now he was standing in the middle of it! He wasn't sure what scared him more... When something jumped out and attacked him or having to sit around and wait for it to happen... However, he would have an object of comparison soon enough...

Mute Xavier Greenwood

Thoughts I have. - Living undead demon?... I think... -
Strange feeling I have. - Aware, nervous. -
The location I stand at. - Tomb of the Exiled. -
Who I can tell is beside me. - Elven woman. -

As Mute and the elven woman walked further into the depths of the cave he was getting more nervous. He wasn't sure if it was the fact that they had no idea what to do or if it would be the fact that it felt like the cave was trying to eat them. The caves walls slowly got closer and closer as well as the bones that lay on the ground. The bones on the bottom of their feet would crack and snap with their old bitterness. Mute could feel the woman getting more skittish like a small cat. "Would you mind telling me your name?" He asked to try to lighten up the dark mood. Although he kinda guessed that it would hardly be possible. But at least it might get her to relax a bit more with her moving around like that. He could almost feel her ready to pounce on him and grab onto his arm to try to keep herself from harm. But little that would do really. If she were to do that it would only cause them more problems then they already had. Not only was this cave dark and getting smaller. But there was danger in there.

The moment Mute stopped. He handed the torch to the girl. Most likely would be a bad idea in the first place. But he had to do some thing... About that strange thing. Mute drew his sword. Obviously the crossbow would do no good. This thing was made out of bones! What was it... A composed demon zombie? Mute wasn't all sure what to do but brace himself and walk in cation to this thing. The best thing to do would be to let it attack first. After all he wasn't sure what it could do.

The Elf-Maiden only replied faintly and feebly to Mute's query. "I-I'm Niida..." she barely managed to gasp out. Now was not the time for pleasantries and introductions, as the creature began its assault! It raised its mace up high, hobbling toward its prey, which seemed to either Mute or Niida, or possibly both. He took a swing downward, though it did not hit its quarry. When the Demon Skull-adorned Mace made contact with the ground, the impact was enough to make the tunnels quake! Quite obviously, this mace was something to be reckoned with, the very force of it hitting the ground making a THUD noise and feeling in the chests of those around it, like a particularly powerful explosion.

The creature picked up the mace again, preparing for another attack... It didn't seem inhibited by the mace's apparent mass or weight, and it's pretty safe to say that these bones, barring the weapon, are not the bones of Demons. These were conglomerate bones of the numerous races of the world that dared to travel in these caverns... However, there is a sickening aura to the creature, though it was a faint aura, almost as if it shouldn't have one to begin with. If auras can't be detected, there was something else distinguishable about the creature; its stench. The bones have lost their flesh long ago, and yet this reanimated mish-mash of bones still reeked of death and decay, as though it were still rotting. If Mute is familiar with Dark Magics or has encountered them before, he knows that this is a trademark characteristic of Necromancy, which meant someone was controlling this creature within the cavern...

It lifted its weapon again, readying itself to take a swing at Mute and Niida, not even bothering to discriminate between its target and whoever was nearby... The gargantuan mace was raised and another swing taken at his target, the enormous skull sailing sideways through the air...!

Neysa quietly walked Next to Kiyoshi. Her deep green eyes scanned the surrounding area from under the hood of her cloak. She let out a soft sigh and shook her head. She wasn't thrilled about returning to the wasteland. Neysa had no idea what was in store for them but there was no turning back now. She had a feeling if she tried to that the people of the city probably wouldn't let her back in.

Neysa glanced over at Kyoshi's arm and a frown appeared. He seemed to be injured but she didn't know what had happened to him. Maybe had to do with why Shinobi was covered with blood last night. She reached out and gently placed on his shoulder. "Uhm Kyoshi...If your arm is bothering you at some point..I could take a look at it.." she offered with a small smile. She was a healer and if anything she could take away pain or completely close the wound.

Sefas Minos
Alchemist
Location: Border of Tenepolis Area and Ebon Fields

By this time, the walk to the Ebon Fields was slowly drawing to a close. With each step everyone in the party group, Sefas and the others became closer to the outer reaches of the Black Wastes. The ground below Sefas' feet was no longer crunching with the gravelly noises beneath his rather immense shoes, but now starting to become quieter, as though stepping on soil instead of some coarse, rocky sand. He looked up, then behind him. The City of Tenepolis was slowly becoming a small cluster of twisting nightmare spires... Ironically, it was the closest to the living world they were ever going to get from the rest of the depths of this hell.

Sefas looked down at his shoes, then back at his companions.

"Well... Now that we're in the fields, we might as well figure out which collapsed tunnel we're going to first..." He pointed to one of the X's, southeast of where they currently were. "This one is the closest... Do you all want to take a look at this one first?" He looked between the other three, then noticed Neysa addressing the others... He remained silent and decided to wait for a moment to go.

The woman's offer was nice, but kiyoshi couldn't accept. "My arm is bothering me the least." He said, wearing something resembling a smile. he turned his head towards Neysa, still trying to smile. "Thanks for the offer, though." Kiyoshi looked back to the front again, and began to follow Sefas once more. He could feel a difference in the ground as he progressed. He looked down, and saw that the ground was more like soil rather than gravel. He brought his gaze back up, and looked at the area. Kiyoshi frowned. The environment just kept on getting more depressing each minute.

As Sefas spoke, Kiyohi pulled out his map and gave it a quick look. He searched around for the X that Sefas suggested they check out first. When he found it, he frowned even more. There was nothing special that made that particular X something to dread, but Kiyoshi just didn't want to go to a tunnel marked "collapsed" that was filled with demons that he would have to kill. He breathed a sigh of frustration beofre turning his head towards Sefas. "I guess so.Why not?"

User ImageNarinthe's eye scanned the area carefully. Nothing seemed out of place, he couldn't see anything quite yet. But he was proof that that didn't mean nothing was there. He merely kept on alert, ready to defend the group from anything. Though, he wasn't too intent upon listening to their conversations, until Sefas spoke up.

He nodded to Sefas in response to his question. It was the most reasonable action to take at the moment. His eye floating back down to Kiyoshi, then Neysa, it seemed to him she'd asked something about his arm. He shrugged, it wasn't much of something he needed to be listening in on.

Sefas Minos
Alchemist
Location: The Ebon Fields

Nodding slowly at the general agreement of the group, Sefas adjusted his robe and readied himself for heading out into these fields... Apparently, they were in greater danger of being spotted and attacked out in the Ebon Fields than near Tenepolis. With this thought in mind, he pulled out the box of matches and a vial of sickeningly yellow-green gas... He wasn't going to risk anything in this excursion.

As the party would travel down the Ebon Fields, it became evident just how maddening this part of the world was... The only features and changes in topography in the entire South they've seen thus far were Tenepolis and the Umbral Mountains. The rest of it was flat all the way around, scarcely even a hill rising up out of the pitch-black soil. The further down southeast, the collapsed tunnel was starting to become easier to notice from a distance; a pile of rocks and dirt clumped up in a small ring off in the distance... That must be where they were headed. There weren't any rocks or any features in the other parts of the Ebon Fields for miles around. For those with keener eyesight (of which Sefas is not), one could see a human-ish shape out among the rocks... Just one, no others. Though it was particularly difficult to distinguish what exactly it was from this distance, even for those with particularly keen eyesight... In order to see it, it's evident that the group needs to get closer. Sefas pressed on, sliding open the matchbox and producing one of the matches, twiddling the wooden stick with its crimson tip around his fingers, almost in the same manner a man would fiddle with a knife before its use...

Kiyoshi noted the terrain. It was very flat, making it seem as though nothing could possibly pop out at them. But even then Kiyoshi had this feeling that something would. He gave the area a very quick and rushed scan, and found nothing. Everything was starting to bother him. The darkness, the still flat ground, the tense feeling that something was waiting to attack. Kiyoshi wasn't sure how much more he could take. It was the incident from the night before that kept haunting him and bugging him, making it hard for him to focus.

Out of the corner of his eye, Kiyoshi saw Sefas fiddle with a match and a vial. Kiyoshi took this as a sign that he should make sure he was ready. He gripped his spear tighter, and looked around again, ready to detect any movement. Then he stopped, without warning for just a secod or two. It felt as though something had happened sowhere else, and it was really important. Kiyoshi shrugged it off, and continued to trudge on.

Neysa quietly walked along with the group. Her eyes wandered around the the area. "Wow..it's hard to believe that this place was once alive." To be truthful, this place gave her the creeps. There was no telling what was lurking out here waiting to pounce on any unsuspecting traveler. Though she believed that from far off the could probably see something coming at them. "I thought the earth had the ability to heal with time but everything here...it looks like it will never happen."

She looked over at the vial that Sefas was holding in his hand and titled her head to the side. "So what is in the vial?" she asked with raise of a brow. The way Sefas fiddled with the match made her a tad bit nervous. Her grip on her staff tightened slightly and she looked about for a moment before setting her gaze back on the alchemist. She hand an idea to what the contents of the vial did with the match but she wasn't exactly sure. "And what's the match for?"

Sefas continued walking on toward the hole... It started becoming clearer. It was just a single person along the sides of the collapsed tunnel, a prospector by the look of him... Those who would see him would notice a rather well-kept man, his shoes shined and his outfit washed and pressed. He looked down into the tunnels, seeming apprehensive about what was going on... Perhaps he too was expecting an attack to come at any given moment, just as the party trekking the fields was.

In response to Neysa's questions, Sefas smiled lightly and held up the vial.

"This is what I call a choking gas... It's pretty powerful stuff, as when it's breathed in, most people will choke a bit and try to run away from it or lose consciousness from being stuck in it too long... However, it isn't fatal, which I was worried about when dealing with Demons." He twiddled with the match, rotating it through his fingers.

"However, there is something else interesting about this gas that I think you'll find most intriguing... See, on top of it being incredibly noxious and incapacitating... It's also very flammable. So if I light this match, even the spark would cause whatever's inside to burst into flames. Since there's almost no wind around here... That will be confined to the cloud of gas that would be surrounding whatever's attacking us." Sefas beamed with a degree of pride, despite the morbidity of what he was saying... A gaseous substance that both chokes something inside AND provides fuel for them to be incinerated... This Alchemist was no stranger to the dangers of being attacked on the road, and with any luck, his preparation will help the group tremendously... Even if he is a rather strange individual who may be a bit insane, though he seemed to assuage any fears in the next statement.

"I'm hoping I won't have to do this, though. This could be dangerous if any of us are to stand too close... We'll have to be careful."

User ImageNarinthe's eye stopped upon a figure during his paranoid scans of the surrounding terrain. It was too far to discern much, other than it was an individual. From such a distance, it appeared small, perhaps it was one of the miners. The demons in the Wastes were often larger than most humans, and Narinthe was slightly an example, as his towering height always was apparent.

His eye shifted to the people he was with again. Neysa was quiet, seemingly stiff. It was understandable, even he was stiff. She remarked something aloud, that caused for him to shut his eye with displeasure. He knew well what had happened to make it such a place. The green South used to be his home..

As she asked Sefas about his vial. Narinthe curiously looked at him. The way he fiddled with his match was odd, as if he expected to try to attack someone with it. However, it seemed to trigger a response in Kiyoshi and Neysa. Narinthe did not grasp for his weapons, as it would make it more obvious to any spectating demons that lay in ambush what he had for their demise.

His eye wandered to the Prospector. It did not take more than a handful of moments to realize he was the figure he'd been analyzing earlier. He bowed his head as the passed the man. Interested, he listed to Sefas. The gas was flammable and could cause an unconsciousness? Narinthe had not given him proper credit: the man was fairly applicable in a fight. He nodded, as he warned for their caution.

Narinthe peered down into the tunnels, his keen eye and eyes seemed to be all of it already. The man stood still for a moment, to intensify his senses' capabilities, only to catch up a few moments later. There were no sounds out of the ordinary. He'd heard some rocks crumbling, he'd heard the echo of air trapped in the walls of the earth below. His eye narrowing, his brow furrowing, he put his hands inside the pockets of his, to join his Kusarigama, reattachng their chains.

The talk of flammable gas made Kiyoshi feel uneasy. he though of burning something alive was disgusting, and almost inhumane. Kiyoshi knew that, depending on the situation, the flammable gas may not be instant, and therefore a most painful way to die. He looked to the ground. "Doesn't anybody wonder why demons have to be killed on sight? There has to be a reason they cause so much trouble." Kiyoshi's voice was very serious, and curious. "I thinks it's a horrible policy to kill living beings without a thought." His gaze rose, and Kiyoshi gazed at the landscape.

After a quick scan of the area, Kiyoshi noticed that the masked man had become alerted to something. "Do you see something?" He asked, his head slightly tilted. Things were getting very tense, and Kiyoshi was very anxious. If there was something in the distance, Kiyoshi wasn't sure what he would do. Especially if it was an enemy. No matter what, Kiyoshi really didn't want to take the life of anything.

Sefas adjusted his robes, finally getting near enough to the prospector to be in hearing distance with the minimum of effort. The man turned around and looked to the party, waving his hand in the air as though to either greet them, signal his position, or perhaps both. He shouted loudly as he started waving both hands, hoping adding more hands to his waving would grab more attention.

"Oy! OOOY! OVER HERE! HEY! HEY!" He kept shouting generic means to grab attention for the group... As they'd approach the man, they'd notice that he was wearing a khaki suit with a tan overcoat and a wide-brimmed, white hat. He appeared to be an older man, though his skin was very well-kept, especially considering where he was and his position. "I'm so glad you're all here! You're the help that the city sent, right?"

"Hello, sir. What brings you out this far into the wastes?" Sefas tilted his head while maintaining a polite atmosphere, placing the match in his mouth as if it were for a pipe or a cigar. The prospector replied nervously, as though aware that his situation is rather odd. "Prospecting Enferantite, of course... Though it hasn't been easy. The last three crews sent here to work the tunnels were killed by Demons! Bastards must have eaten them alive! That Captain was holding out on me from the start! I didn't even get a military escort..."

Now, several things about this man were strange and would likely stand out to the Shinobi as a long-time visitor/occupant of Tenepolis... For one thing, this man proliferated the stereotype that Demons ate their victims, which was not true... The Demons left them out to rot to intimidate other humanoids or threw them into nearby pools to make the water undrinkable. Anyone who lived in the Southern Region this close to Demonic Activity knew this. Another thing that was strange was the fact that he came here alone to begin with. The dangers of the wastes aside, Captain Salnesh would have definitely sent an escort with him... She probably wouldn't have let him even leave the city without one. As if those two aren't enough to compound the oddity of this man's presence here... There was one final detail. Looking back at Sefas and the rest of the party, the bottom halves of their clothes would be covered in dust, and their shoes cached in the moister dirt they've been walking in... But looking at the Prospector, the Shinobi would definitely notice that his clothes were completely spotless, almost as if he never moved through the wastes at all...

"We're here to inspect the tunnels... There's reason to believe that this recently collapsed mining point is infested with Demons. Would you care if we took a look?" He looked to the Prospector and raised a brow... Well, something was apparent to Sefas to be strange, but not enough to stop him from asking permission to enter the caverns...

"But of course... I can tell you for sure, there are monsters down there! Be careful." Sefas would now walk past the Prospector to take a look into the tunnel... The Prospector watched the Alchemist, seeming to wait for him to go into the tunnel and ensuring that he did... He'd shift his attention periodically to the others to make sure that they, too, went inside the tunnel...

User ImageNarinthe's head turned to Kiyoshi. He shook his head side to side, there was nothing that he'd scented or heard.. or saw, in the tunnels. But that only meant there were deeper inside--that mean where they were going, the danger was waiting. As his head had been turned to Kiyoshi and Nesya, he noted the dust upon their legs. It was a heavy coating, and as he looked at himself, he nodded. His tabi were covered in the moist earth, and as they stepped, he could hear it upon the rest of their feet.

Hearing the calls of the Prospector, he followed Sefas to the man. Almost instantly, the Shinobi felt he was a little offsetting. But as time was sent, as he listened to him, his eyebrow furrowed. There was something wrong here. The Captain would have sent an escort with him. In fact, Narinthe knew she sent n one alone through the Black Wastes, and especially not to one of the tunnels.

Another thing caught him. If the man had been here as long as he would need to be in order to become a Prospector, he'd know better than to claim the demons had eaten his crewmen. Demons were not a race that consumed human flesh. They found it revolting, and they found it an insult to them, to eat something so weak and foreign. To spread the stereotype here was very offsetting.

the final fact was that the man's clothes were clean, right to his shoes. AS if he hadn't traveled the wastes. Narinthe's head turned upon his neck to scan the area for a tent, for a place in which the man would wash himself or to change clothes.. his eyes did not find such a place. It was very fish to the Shinobi, he was tense here. Perhaps this man was setting a trap.

As Sefas asked for permission, the Shinobi refused to turn his back on the man. But in order to hide his suspicions, he did so. Though, his ears felt as if they would rip to the back of his head with how intently he was listening to the sounds behind him. The man clutched the hidden weapons again, their chains did not emit a sound.

As Sefas walked toward the tunnel, the Shinobi watched the reaction of the Prospector. He seemed anxious, staring at the back of Sefas before looking to them. He was sizing them up.. He was waiting for them to go inside. But it wasn't like that in itself would have offset Narinthe. perhaps he'd be uncertain if they were going to go, perhaps he was afraid of Narinthe himself. But all of the oddities combined.. he felt very odd about the man. Stepping casually and discreetly between the rest of the group and the man, Narinthe stood calmly, masking everything his mind was telling him.
