The Sfakianos household was a flurry of activity when Lydia and Yvette arrived home. Fortunately, Yvette had woken up in the taxi, so there wasn’t the snag of having to explain why she was unconscious. Even so, preparations were still going on for the birthday party that evening, and Lydia was swept up in the excitement. For the next several hours, she was just Lydia Sfakianos, birthday girl, fifteen at last. She wore a long poofy gown in a delicate shade of pink and a rhinestone-studded tiara, and insisted on adding to the outfit her Spanish comb and French lace shawl and her Egyptian glass pendant, to the surprise of no one who knew her well. She had initially wanted to wear her Dutch clogs as well, but had been talked out of this idea by her mother. True, the clogs weren’t good for dancing, but they were fun. It was probably for the best though, considering she danced one of her dances standing on her father’s feet, just as she had when she was little. She couldn’t quite tell if he teared up over the fact that she was growing up, or if it was because she was hurting his toes.
In between the dances were several courses of delicious food. The caterers had really gone all out, and several of Lydia’s favorites were on the menu. The cake, which had multiple layers in different flavors, was spectacular. After a while she was glad that her dress wasn’t too tight, since otherwise she would have burst it at the seams. Somehow she managed to continue dancing late into the evening, with her father, her mother, her friends, anyone who wanted to join her, and alone when everyone else was tired. There were classic ballroom dances as well as more modern music, which Lydia was not as fond of, but the evening was so magical that she wanted to enjoy it to its fullest. She managed to make both of her parents cry during the Ceremony of the Fifteen Candles, and suspected that Yvette might have gotten a bit weepy as well, but then, she was Yvette.
It was well after midnight when she finally retired to her room, her birthday officially over. All good things had to come to an end at some point, she knew, but it was still sad. She felt like Cinderella must have felt after the ball, when her coach had turned back into a pumpkin and her dress was a rag again. After a night like that, how was she supposed to go back to her everyday life? How could she simply go to school the next day as though nothing had happened, like she had turned fifteen in her sleep? What was she supposed to do now?
Lydia threw herself on her bed impulsively. Her dress tangled with the sheets, her elbow bumped against the headboard, and something wedged up against her chest and started digging into her ribs. She groaned and rolled over, her elbow smarting, and pulled out what had poked her. It was her purse, or more accurately, something sticking out of her purse. A purple pen with a large brassy cap that depicted a dove carrying an olive branch. The same pen she had been carrying for two weeks, ever since the cat had left it for her at the restaurant.
Everything came rushing back to her in a flash: the cat, the monster, the girl. Senshi, starseeds, youma, the Negaverse. Magic. Superheroes. She wasn’t just Lydia Sfakianos, high school student and future anthropologist slash travel writer. Now she was Sailor Irene, Senshi of Peace. Or had she always been Sailor Irene, and she only realized now? Everything was so new, and she couldn’t claim to understand most of it. All she knew was that she was a different person at fifteen than she had been at fourteen, for better or for worse.
For the past few hours she had forgotten the events of the afternoon, her last birthday present of the year. Now she remembered, and nothing would ever be the same.
