His Majesty Christopher Chibi_Ivan_Braginski His Majesty Christopher Chibi_Ivan_Braginski His Majesty Christopher I was just thinking, should there be a subforum for constructed languages? Like Esperanto, or Interlingua, or even something like Klingon or Elvish? You never know when you'll have someone come along who has experience in one of those. Just food for thought smile I would like to learn some fantasy languages. XD They're so much fun biggrin But Elvish and Klingon are very complicated...anyway. It's great to be able to say random things to people in languages from TV shows or books. (Oh, and it completely slipped my mind earlier, but your avatar is the best thing ever XD) Yes, they are complicated... but I would love to learn them. X3 (Thanky you, very much. It's a cosplay.) It's actually really fun to work some of them out. (Only of my favorite character from my favorite anime ;3) I tried to memorize the alphabet one time. Tolkien created more than Elvish, right? I think he created three or four. I'd like to create a language one day... (Ohh... cool~ It's the main reason I want to learn Russian.)

There are actually two main dialects of Elvish, Quenya and Sindarin, and there are about 13 lesser dialects. Tolkien also created the Black Speech of Mordor and all the other languages found in Lord of the Rings. He also created, I believe, three other languages outside of the book series. He really had a bit of an obsession but I empathize completely wink
(I really love Russian~. And, you know, he may or may not be a reason why I'm learning it... :3)

What I've mostly found are just vocab lists or set phrases. Not exactly ideal, but it is nice to be able to say "May Balrogs eat you" in Elvish ^^ That's just one example, but for languages such as Klingon there are full dictionaries and how-to books about them. A lot of fantasy languages don't have that, unfortunately.

Did someone say Klingon and Tolkein's Elvish were difficult? Please direct me to the best websites you can find! I love trying to learn difficult languages! (I'm also looking for Hungarian if anyone can give me a good link or book for that!) I don't think the Constructed Languages Guild has Klingon or Elvish right now, but if y'all'd like some ideas for constructing your own, please come on over. I'm a mod there, possibly one of the only two or so who comes on regularly any more. Possibly one of the few in the entire guild who comes on regularly any more, but with new members willing to try, hopefully we can revive it. I'll find the link if you don't want to go searching for it. I'm constructing three of my own right now, at least two of which are in the same world, but I haven't gotten to dialects yet. Edit: Here's the link: Sorry for advertising it here, but I figure, if anyone here wants ideas to make up their own, this would be the place for it because there are so many. If you mods don't mind, I could copy my stuff here, too, but it still needs a lot of work.

I don't remember the exact spelling but it's pronounced "Nye valarowkar too-ay mahtar." MAY BALROGS EAT YOU. It sounds pretty evil, but it took me quite some time to figure out how to actually say it. I really enjoy the challenge of auxiliary and fantasy languages, but as I said before I've tried and failed. I do want to try out a little experiment with my friends though. I give them a list of a hundred or so nonsense words and their definitions and then tell them they are only allowed to speak using those words. I'd like to see what grammar they come up with smile

My friend and I have been wanting to learn a language together so we're the only ones who speak it in the area and we can have our own private conversations biggrin

And since the only language I know fluently is English, I wouldn't know where to start. The more languages I can learn, the easier it will be to know where to start.

Just start with a language, any language, and even with the slightest knowledge of it many linguistic ideas become very easy.

Just start with a language, any language, and even with the slightest knowledge of it many linguistic ideas become very easy. Since the only language that I know well is English, it would come out very similar to English. My only worry about that is that English is rather... difficult (there are exceptions to almost every grammar rule). I think I'll try it, though. Who knows? One of my friends may be interested in a language that I create.
