German is mainly harsh because of the 'R' sound. In north Germany, it's spoken in the back of the throat which makes it sounds much harsher because we don't have that sound in england. In south Germany and Austria it's pronounced at the front of the mouth like we do so those dialects sound much nicer.
The ch sound, [x], like in 'ich' is also one we don't have and sounds really harsh.

I'm Swiss, and my French friends always says: "Swiss German is like Ch-K-Ch-K, and nothing else"

I'm part Swiss (Appenzel), but I don't speak Swiss-German. However, my relatives do joke about the dialect. They call it a "cutesy version of German" which adds "eli" to the end of every word.
