Caritas was giggling again, having a bunch of fun. It wasn't that easy to stay on Unyezi's back as he stood and moved around, but she could do it!
She giggled even more as a brilliant idea came to her. "I know how to find it!" she announced as she started climbing up her grandfather's mane until she was on top of his head. "We find it like this!" By leaning forward and stretching her paws down, the black cub was just able to cover the white lion's eyes.

When the cub began moving, he stood more still, hoping not to make it any harder on her than it had to be. He made a face, glancing upward as Caritas positioned herself and covered his eyes.
"How is this going to help me find that old beetle?"
His control over his tone was wavering now and he couldn't help but chuckle as he stood there, blind and wondering where to start the search like this.

The cub grinned as she heard the laughter in her grandfather's voice. "Well," she explained the fictional game further, "invisdable beetles like to eat eyes. So I am pertectoring your eyes because the beetle will go right for them and then I'll catch it and win!"
It made perfect sense because every game had to have a way to win and this was obviously how the game of Hummock ended.

"Ooh! That's very thoughtful of you!"
He stood very still for a couple seconds before slowly and carefully lowering himself back to the ground, his tail swaying behind him.
"Is it coming?" he asked in a whisper, his eyes moving side to side under his eyelids and her paws.. and he waited.

Caritas would have preened at the compliment except she was still protecting Unyezi's eyes from the invisible beetle. Her own tail swished back and forth, brushing the lion's mane this way and that.
"I think so," she whispered back. Then her whole small body tensed. "THERE IT IS!" she cried and tried to bound forward, slipped on her grandfather's head as she pushed her paws onto his eyes, and tumbled head over paws onto the ground.
The black cub was on her feet again in moments and grinning as she hit a spot on the ground repeatedly.
"I gotted it! It's deaded!" she told Unyezi excitedly.

Unyezi winced as the cub pressed against his eyes and then tumbled over his nose and onto the ground- opening his eyes just in time to spot her clamber back to her feet and triumphantly stomp the ground.
"Phew! Good thing you got it!" he said, "What would grandma have said if we told her we let an eye-eating beetle get away somewhere by our den?"

Oooh...that was a good question. What WOULD Gramma say if she hadn't killed the invisible beetle?
"Prob'ly...prob'ly she would've not been happy," the cub surmised. "She might've made us go back and get it." It was always harder for her to figure out Gramma as opposed to Grampa...but neither was as hard as Queen-Aunt Alcmene.

"No, I don't think she would have been," he agreed, shaking his head, "But now we know who to ask for help for anything like this. And I bet Grandma would love to hear about it when she gets home."
Hopefully Nerit would be back before Mawu or Uli came to get Caritas and take her home with them, but they weren't very far away and Unyezi could easily take her back himself so they might wait it out.

"Okay!" Caritas agreed happily. Telling Gramma about how she single-pawedly defeated the invisible eye-eating beetle would be a lot of fun!
"Can we go tell her now?" the cub asked eagerly.

"Oh, I don't know if we'd be able to find her.."
He shrugged. It wouldn't be a big deal to go for a walk and see if Nerit was busy. If she was, they probably wouldn't find her but if she wasn't busy.. she'd be on her way back home and they could distract her all they wanted. And whichever it was, it would keep Caritas busy.
"OK, ok," he said, smiling, "Let's go see if we can find Grandma."
And he led the way, nudging Caritas to follow along after him.
