Seme

Pronounced: Seh-meh
Also written as: 攻め, せめ, セメ

Seme is a predominantly yaoi/shounen-ai term for the "dom" or "top", the dominant partner in a relationship, or sometimes just the more masculine. It's not often used in yuri, mostly because most yuri doesn't follow the pattern that most yaoi does - where one partner is the dominant "male" figure (usually bigger and meaner) and the other is the submissive "female" figure (usually smaller and more timid), often yuri couples are both timid and even though one makes the first move, they're both surprised by it - or if it does, yuri tends to be a little more subtle about it.

If and when it is used for yuri, the seme would be the "butch" in a lesbian relationship. A lot of yuri fans have told me they hate the terms seme and uke because they imply that even homosexual relationships have to ape the gender roles of heterosexual relationships, but others like to use the terms for dominance roleplays, like slave roleplays.

Unlike with uke, I don't actually know where the term comes from, unfortunately.

Uke

Pronounced: Ooo-keh
Also written as: 受け, うけ, ウケ

"Uke" is actually a Japanese term from martial arts - I've heard that it's specific to Aikido from some people and general for all martial arts from others.

When you're teaching someone to defend themselves, what you usually do is stand up, call a student out and tell them to attack you so you can demonstrate how to defend yourself against the attack. You could say something like "try and grab me around the neck from behind", then the student tries to grab you, and you throw them over your shoulder, rip off their arm and beat them with the wet end. If you do that, you are giving the nage (投げ, なげ or ナゲ), which means a "throw" or "fall". If you're the unlucky student being used as a bad example, you're the uke, which comes from ukemi (受身, うけみ or ウケミ) which is a way of taking a fall so that you don't get hurt.

Like seme, uke is not usually used in yuri, but it's fairly common in yaoi.
