A New Arrival

Petra stared down at the paper in her hands with annoyed disbelief painted clearly on her face and in her posture. She held in her hand a letter saying something about picking up her new charge. What new charge? she had not requested to be a part of some foster program?! She crumpled the letter in one hand and thought about tossing it into the garbage but some bold print at the bottom caught her eye. She partially uncrumpled the paper and as she read her eyes widened in anger. "WHAT!?" was quickly followed by a long line of obscenities in Portuguese and the slam of the car door followed. As she pealed out of her driveway all she could think about was how this, this PLACE could dare to threaten to close down her Capoeira studio! Sure she didn't have some permit or another but her studio had been established for so many years before that law was in effect that no one cared. How could these people just come in dump her with something and threaten to take away her LOVE if she didnt take it. This had to be settled NOW!

She reached the place, some kind of lab by the looks of it and entered angrily, but everyone seemed to be waiting for her. They took one look at the crumpled papers in her hand and pushed, pulled, and herded her into room after room with no one for her to yell at or get answers from. The whole situation was infuriating and as she waited in what she hoped was the last room she had a pile of papers in her hands about child care and she was about to boil over. Finally a tech came into the room and as Petra was about to stand up and give the man a good talking down to (and probably a fist to the face) a small girl came through the door after him. Petras anger huffed out of her in a hiss and she almost instantly deflated. She hated being angry in front of children because of her own past. She ground her teeth at the tech who looked infuriatingly smug as he motioned for the little girl to go to Petra.

Petra stared at him wide eyed, "Whoa whoa wait a sec. I came here to fix this. I cant care for a child!" Petra began but even her moderately controlled tone seemed to freak the small girl out who was now cowering behind the tech. The tech made a face of dissaproval "Well I guess we could just put her back and let her live here, but we will be in touch with your city hall." The tech said and roughly reached down for the small girl. She squeaked a protest and it tug at Petras heartstrings. Before she could help herself she had scooped the little girl up off the floor and was holding her protectively. "You will not touch this child like that ever again. understand." The venom and obvious physical pressence of Petra seemed to unnerve the tech a bit and Petra managed to get some satisfaction from this. She glared him down until he left and then realized she had a child. She couldnt leave this little girl with these people. She sighed and began to carry the small child back out of the lab to the car. Meanwhile the child was still clinging to Petra in fear.

One in the car and on the way home Petra had no idea what to do, sure she had a house and she could take care of this child but....she didnt want to! She knew however that she was defeated and had to deal with this. so the small talk began.

What to do

Adani sat on the soft grass of the backyard with her knees tucked up under her enjoying the breeze. Her mother was on the other side of the yard silently and skillfully going through her capoiera movements. It was definately something interesting to see. Adani had been watching her for the past half hour and still her mother had yet to stop moving. It was amazing considering her mother was a couch potato for 80% of the time Adani saw her. Adani figured she was just resting if this was the kind of activity she was up to the other 20% of the time.

Adani looked up into the sky, the blue blue sky and sighed. She wanted to fly, oh how she wanted it. She could see her birds flying around, no where to go, just going anywhere they wanted. It seemed like such an enchanted life. Adani wanted it. She then noticed from the corner of her eye a bird watching her and she stood as still as she could. It was easy for her to make friends with almost anything and she especially loved to make friends with the birds in the back yard. She had some crumbs in a ziplock bag near her legs and so she waited, trying to look as unscary as possible to entice the bird closer. It was your average little sparrow but Adani loved and envied it just the same. She had endless love when it came to her bird friends.

The Bird crept closer and eventually came close enough that Adani slowly opened the bag to reach in for a cracker. She crumbled it and held her hand out. The bird hopped back a few paces before considering the food. This must be a new bird to her yard, Adani thought. most of the other birds knew her by sight and were quite tame with her. She eventually coaxed the bird to eat from her hand and a few of the more regular sparrows landed nearby and jealously began to tween to a meal too. Adani giggled and with her free hand began to spread cracker crumbs everywhere. One day maybe she would tame a really wonderful bird, like the big colorful ones she saw in her books or at the pet store. She wondered if her momma would ever let her have one and so slowly she began to watch her mother again trying to understand how she could be so lazy and so active at the same time.

Time for Education!

Petra rummaged through her desk at home and after much fuss finally found what she was looking for, childrens coloring books! She had tons of them because of her dojo, they were basically to keep her students younger siblings under control when they had to come. She had been thinking these past few days that Adani might benefit from a little education. Petra had been really slacking as a parent, she just didnt know what to do! She took the child to the park when she practiced and fed her and bought her clothes....was that it? She felt like she should be doing more as a mother but she just couldnt think of what to do. Then this little girl spent all her time in the back yard with the birds...maybe if she took her naps in the back yaard she could be closer to her daughter.....yeah that was it she would set up a hammok in the back yard. Petra smiled at her cleverness, she couldnt give up her naps, they were just part of her but she did feel bad about leaving such a small child to her own devices every day.

"Adani I have something for you!" Petra happily and loudly yelled into the backyard as she opened the screen door skilfully with her arms full of crayons, books, and the hammok. "Come help mommy" Petra motioned to all the stuff she had.

Adani watched her mother with curiosity as she wondered how her mother had even gotten the door open with all those things in her arms. She hopped up and ran over to her mommy and grabbed everything except the hammok which Petra motioned that she wanted to keep. "mamma whats this?" Adani asked, the books had blank pages and black lines and strange symbols. She dropped the crayons on the floor and started to flip through the strange books. Her mother hadnt ever really given her anything or really did anything with her. This was strange. She watched her mom set up the hammok and sit down before motioning for Adani to bring everything over. Adani obeyed and sat with her mom who was now laying down.

"well honey this is the alphabet, you gotta learn it to be smart and understand things. No daughter of mine will be disadvantaged in this life!" Petra wasnt sure if Adani understood all that and she felt like she had to add " I'm sorry I dont spend alot of time with you dear, but now I have a hammok so we can be together a little more ok, now listen carefully" Petra went on to start explaining the numbers and letters then coloring them in with her daughter.

Adani looked at her mom with wonder and love, she had always thought that her mother didnt really like her because she had been so unexpected. But this promise of time was so wonderfull. She felt so happy to be wanted. She didnt even mind that her mother would always be sleeping like normal cause she was trying. Adani put all her effort into learning and by the end of the day she could recite the whole alphabet and count to 10 so to celebrate the two of them went inside to get some ice cream in celebration!

Dear log,

Well I'm losing my mind. I think I'm doing the right thing in raising this little girl but I guess i really wont know until she grows up. Its so frustrating, I didnt think I would every want children so soon and now BAM I got one. Well no going back. She is still pretty shy but these past few weeks she has made a friend or two and since I started sleeping outdoors in the hammok she has started to open up to me a little more. Every time I talk to her its so obvious she is filled with so much love and trust and its no wonder she is so shy and scared all the time, she gives her whole self to people. I hope she is doing that with me, its hard to tell, but I think she is. I'll spend more time with her to make sure. God I have to start being more selfless....i never thought I would learn from such a puny little girl. maybe I'll teach her Capoiera when she gets a little older, martial arts give self confidence right? cause this girl needs to stop getting seconds of humble pie!

Petra out.
