I'm just going to touch on the weapons/magic portion of your quest! The way I understand it is that magic for the knights is supposed to be more status effect-y than actually offensive, so thinking along the lines of... like green magic, is how it was explained to me. His attacks right now are reading as something closer to actual buzz/shocks and physical pain, which I would think would be more in the realm of senshi.
Since you said that you want to incorporate direction, how about something disorienting? Like he could hold up his compass and it could send a wave of magic out that temporarily confused directions for his opponent. They may try to step forward and find themselves going backward, or something, so they'd have to adjust their thinking really abruptly or be all over the place. If it only lasted a little while, since the magic would be weaker at that point, they could probably just get adjusted ("Oh hey, I have to step to the right to go left right now!") when the magic wore off, which would lead to a little bit of re-orienting again. Even if it was only for about thirty seconds, that'd be seriously disorienting and would mess up your groove for a battle, which is my impression of what knights are meant to do with their magic.
I really love the theme you have going and the direction you could take with it (AUGH PUN UNINTENDED) and I hope that's helpful! Another idea for the pot, anyway. 8D;;
