His blue eyes glanced at Kaatje as she asked, seeing some insecurity and doubt inside her. She was obviously morally conflicted with Senri's views, although Senri didn't see why? After all, the answer was easy. It had always been that way to him. "Why should their lives matter? " Senri asked, not understanding what Kaatje meant. "Or well.. I suppose that I should say that I can't find people I don't know very important." Senri's fingers were a his chin in a thoughtful gesture, as if he never really thought about the issue.
He stepped next to Kaatje, chuckling at her stubbornness. She really was, since Kaatje was so expressive. He put his hands in his pockets, leaning over to meet Kaatje at eye level, his similarly blue eyes staring into hers. "You're so interesting. I don't see why not?" It wasn't a question more then it was a statement, with another easy smile, it wasn't any hardship. After all, it only took a bit of time. Although if you were to ask if he was doing it out of chivalry, that definitely wasn't the answer. "Lead the way, princess."

"Because they're lives," said Kaatje loudly, passionately. Her arms uncrossed to slap violently against her sides, clenching in the khaki fabric of her capris. "People live, you know, they--they deserve their lives, because they were born and that's like a contract, and the Negaverse and the monsters are like the stupid idiots who can't just honor their obligation to let people have their time--you know?"
When you got the redheaded girl going, she really went. Despite her protestations of having no idea what she was doing, or why she was even doing it, she seemed to have some kind of attachment to the idea. Even though, as she said, it was stressing her out, and sometimes scared her so much she was hiding in her room with her hands over her ears, she did seem to care.
"So that's why we're like this, so we can help those people have their time, and doing it for them means maybe someday such a favor will come back to you, right?"
Finally, she stopped talking and then shoved her hands deep in her pockets, elbows locked and shoulders rigid as she picked up her pace a bit. "If there was someone you did care about, and you knew being a sailor soldier could help them, wouldn't you do it," she asked, finally. "Not for them, but for your own peace of mind?"

"So once you save them, what else?" Senri idly walked along, not looking concerned. Maybe once, he might have been like Kaatje in her beliefs. Her passion, and her conviction. Or was he always like this, growing up to be the person he was? Even Senri didn't know the outcome.
Speaking of time.. he reached into his pockets to look at the time on his cellphone. "They'll continue on like normal. But can you guarantee that their time won't be taken away by another negaverser? Or youma? And even when they don't, car accidents, natural disasters, or even other people will end up doing the same. Sorry, but not everything adheres to your little contract." He ticked off each point, one by one as he spoke.
And then all his hands fell away. "And for every person you save, there is undoubtedly another you haven't." Dozens of people who fell into comas, unexplainable deaths, random disappearances. It seemed that no matter how much effort senshi were putting into their work, the number persisted day by day. And when Kaatje spoke about favors coming back to you, that seemed to affect Senri the most. He actually turned to give Kaatje a sardonic grin, "We're speaking about karma? Sorry, but I don't believe in that."
They paused in front of a cross walk, Senri waiting for the light to turn to the walk sign. The question surprised him, enough to glance over at the tense girl. "We're onto hypothetical questions now?" Senri never really liked hypothetical questions. But he could answer it this once. "I'd save them." He looked at Kaatje. "But not for peace of mind. I would save them because I care." So he cared for a handful of the population, but he didn't care about the rest. There a vague glimmer of hope for him, yet.. it wasn't entirely. "If it feels better, you can hit me, call me a b*****d, or whatever will make you happy. But it won't change what I am." Senri slept easily at night, and continued day by day without remorse.

Talking to Senri was like talking to her own baser instincts, the ones that said hey, remember how you had to cut your own hair five inches up so that no one would notice the singed ends? Remember how you keep getting burned and people are starting to look at you weird, and the school nurse put a call in to your cousin, and he's coming to stay soon, and how you're a wanted criminal?
Remember how no one you save seems to care?
She stopped walking to look at him after they crossed the street. Permission given, she balled up her fists; her manicured nails dug into her palms, and she felt a sharp stab of pain when one nail punctured her skin. "Thanks for the permission," she snapped, and she hauled back to punch him square in the gut. "Don't bother walking me the rest of the way home." The redheaded girl turned on her heel and bolted, sneakers pounding out a tattoo in time with the beat of her heart.
