I certainly hope so, but I still believe that the points the page raises are valid, and some of the problem questions still exist.

I think some of her criticisms miss the point. For example, many people give their characters gratuitous Japanese names because Japan is perceived as cool. On the other hand, an... oh, say, Afrikaans name wouldn't have the "cool" factor and so nobody would be using it as a badge of "I'm more awesome than you because I have a name that came from that awesome country of Japan."

Actually, that's not the kind of thing I'm talking about. More like, "Does your character have a nickname or title?" What superhero doesn't? How does that make a Mary Sue? Or: "Does your character speak a foreign language?" So what if they do?
Those are the sort of questions I take issue with. The "De-Sueifiers," too...most characters aren't horrendously ugly or have berserker rages. Things like that.

Now, my definition of a Mary Sue is a character that always does everything (and I mean everything) perfectly, and everyone loves her no matter what, and has no flaws whatsoever.

They aren't bad in and of themselves. It's when they get stacked up beyond a certain point that the character is no longer believable, likable, or too damn overtalented for the rest of the story to support without collapsing in on itself.

Why? It's not telling you that your character has to be ugly or fat to be a good character.

Unfortunately, that's not the way most people define a Mary Sue. A Mary Sue can have flaws, but they tend not to get in the way of her awesomeness when it actually matters, were obviously put there to make the character appear more endearing, or work out to her advantage in the end. For example, Bella Swan is widely considered a Mary Sue because (among other reasons) she's a painfully obvious self insertion who gets everything she wants in the end and what "flaws" she does have are either irrelevant to the story or ultimately self-serving, eg, Edward finds her clumsiness endearing.

When everyone else uses a certain definition of Mary Sue, it doesn't really work to use a different definition than everyone else and claim that they're the ones who are wrong. It's as silly as inventing your own definition of "kettle," proclaiming that no store sells real kettles, and expecting everyone to go along with it.

Finally, see this page for a list of recognized Mary Sue subtypes.

Writer's Mary Sue Test - Midnight got 49

Original Fiction Mary Sue Test - 30 (that's weird..)

I think it would be kinda neat to say that, in relavance to one of the questions - I forgot I originally gave Midnight an accent because of where she's from (I honestly forgot if it was jamaican or some kind of African >_>; It never mattered much.)

But don't forget, even with the Mary-Sue tests, we ARE Sailor Scouts. Someone needs to come up with a Sailor Sue test.. lol

Found One - But I wouldn't call it one of the better ones by a long shot.

On the new test, my favourite D&D character scored a 16. My WoW character scored a 21, but I blame that on the setting as much as anything.

Wow...just wow. Took the new Sailor Sue test, and Akito got 24.5. It was easier to understand than the last one I took.
And then I took the Writer's Mary Sue, and then she got 20. So...
