Wykla passed him the glows needed to fill the container. She was quiet for a very long time before answering. "Do you really think so? I mean, I never practice because its always boring and no fun." She gave her long black hair a head toss over her shoulder.

She nibbled her bottom lip. He almost makes it sound fun. Even though I know everything, and its boring. What is it he sees? Her odd colored eyes looked up at him. "Alright, make you a deal. I'll try these trades if you do 'em with me."

His eyes widened... "T...Try them w..with you? B...But I'm already an apprenticed healer, a...and I asked the Master healer h-here if I could h-help him too... I D...don't know If I c-can!" He said flushing.

"I..c...can maybe teach you h-herbs but I d-don't know if you'll want to be a h-healer."

Wykla gave a sigh and shrug. Well if he didn't wanna help, why should she try? "It's cause you don't like me isn't it? You don't wanna be around me." She didn't look at him as she said it; not wanting him to see how much it hurt her.

"It seems you're very busy, and wouldn't have the time to teach me. Plus I don't know if I'd like working with them." She shouldered the bag and moved on down the row. The faster they got this done the faster he could get away from her.

"N..NO why would you assume that?" He blinked utterly at a loss for the turn in conversation. "I j-just have my own trade and I r-really want to be helpful! W-what if you were hurt a-and the master healer needed an e-extra pair of hands?" He said stammering more in his renewed nervousness.
"W...wouldn't you w-want me t-to be able to? I d-don't know you well en-nough to dislike you. I j-just don't unders-s-stand why yo-you d-don't try...yo-you'd p-probably be v-very good at s-something."

Wykla blinked as she finally noticed him stammering a lot. It was odd, she'd never heard anyone stammer quite so much. "I dunno. It seems no one likes to be around me. I thought maybe you were the same." She answered bluntly in her surprise.

She pondered. What would it be like to belong somewhere? He sounds like being helpful is fun, maybe rewarding? How? You just do the grunt work for someone else. "I doubt I'd get hurt, but maybe some of the other candidates might." Her mind turned forcefully away from the hidden scar on her leg.

Do I really want him to teach me herbs? It sounds like he's offering. If I do try it, then I can at least say I tried it to him, and its one trade scratched off my list. Without realizing it, Wykla had just assumed she wouldn't like this herb learning. "Well, I guess." She looked back at Jarest. "If you still wanna try teaching me then, where and when do you want to meet?"

"Uh...Um..." He shook his head meaning he had no particular place.
"J...Just re-mmember that we're not to use them without a m-master healer present o-ok? b-but just knowing them is useful!" He nodded and wondered if he would be in trouble for this. She wasn't exactly a stray, or some small bird with a broken wing. But he did hope to help her. What a conundrum.

He really had to work on the stuttering too, the Master healer was right, but the more flustered or nervous he got the more he stuttered! What was he going to do...

"..Mm...Maybe you can h...help me with my Um.... s...stutter." He said suddenly. After he'd spoken he realized that the -reason- for his stutter might be offensive to her and wished he hadn't said anything for fear of upsetting her again.

"Hu, if it has to be indoors, there's my room in the candidate barracks. Or we could sit outside by the lake or something. Why would I want to use them? You're just going to teach me names and what they're good for stuff, right?" She shrugged, not using them was perfectly fine with her.

Now she was curious. "How do you think I could help with that?" Wykla wasn't sure how a twelve turn old girl could help, but if he really wanted her to help for teaching her herbs she wouldn't say no. It just seemed fair after all. "Say, why do you stutter anyhow? Have you done it all your life?"

"J...just wh...when I'm nervous... or... or adji...adjit...... wound up." He said changing words out of pure lack of ability to say what he wanted to.

"W....which isn't... an I...insult!" He added quickly turning a deep red. "I..j...Just I'm n...not used to being a...away from my ...c...Cot hold. I'm still n-new to ...e..everyone." He added. "B...but the m...master healer says I nuh-need to g-get it under contr-rol so I can rea-really be a g-good healer." he nodded. "S-stutters aren't c-comforting."

"Sooooo, don't be nervous or wound up." She looked up at him. It seemed an easy fix to her. If he doesn't do what causes the stuttering he wouldn't stutter right?

"And what are you right now? Nervous or wound up?" She couldn't see how anyone could be either by simply changing glows. That was like the most boring task in the whole Weyr! "I guess he's right. You wanna work with people then?"

Wykla bounced a little on her feet. "I've never been away from the Weyr so I wouldn't know. Was your cothold anything like the Weyr? Besides the dragons I mean, of course they didn't have them. Was there a lot of flits around?" For a moment, she'd become distracted from the point at hand. If she never Impressed then she could very well be finding out what those cotholds were like first hand.

"Ok great, but how am I suppose to help?" Maybe just pretending to help would really help him. Or not.

"W...well I t-try not to be but I j-just... I w-worry that I'll give the w-wrong answer say the w-wrong thing." He said and helped change the next glow.

"I D...don't know how to stop that, O...other than kn-knowing more people. I ne-need to be able to ha-handle bigger g-groups. I can ha-handle other thi-things. It's...it's b-better even when I'm N-not worrying about the people just what I need to do... "
The more he focused on thinking about when he stuttered too, it seemed he stuttered less. Perhaps because he was not focused on her, someone 'new' to him, but a thing that he was familiar with...

Wykla gives him a undignified look over her shoulder as she bounced down the hall. "Seriously? Is that all your worried about? I mean c'mon Jarest! How can you never give the wrong answer? Not even the Harpers are that good." She snorted in contempt. "Why worry about that? Just try to do your best. If it does happen then just say you're sorry and didn't know." A shrug of her shoulders followed that statement.

"But surely you had people at your Cothold didn't you? So a Weyr is just like a Cothold isn't it? We've people of all types." She grinned in a mischievous way. "To meet new people, go sit beside someone you've never talked to at dinner and start talking to them. You'll get to know people then."

"Say, my bag is full of dead glows now. You want to come with me so I can show you were to set them out? Why worry about big groups when you can't even handle me? And I'm just a kid." Hmmmm. He doesn't stutter when he's focused on something besides the people, but then how does he interact with them? "I have to tell you something. I don't like big groups either. I only know a few people here, another candidate or two and a couple of the riders from the last clutch. Most of the time I just watch people."
PostPosted: Sat Sep 18, 2010 3:50 pm

"W...well I knew m-more people at the c-cot hold." he said flushing and ducking his head in embarrassment at the scolding.
"I never st-stuttered with my s-sisters!" He added..."W...well not much." He amended.

"Oh! Yeees please!" he nodded, dragging out the Yes in an attempt not to stutter it out, though there was a visible effort.

"...I...I don't se-see anything wrong with ww-w-watching people?" He offered up hopeful that that might be something nice for her. "I l...like watching them too, it's so d-different here. Nnnnot like My s-sisters said but, different s-still."

"Alright, you have a point there. But then I'll counter with if you met people here you'd know a lot more here than you did there. Why not? Why are they so special?" Honestly she was curious. "If you treated me like a sister would you not stutter with me too?"

She grinned and headed down the hall. Ducking through several halls on her way outside. Wykla took him to an out of the way place with lots of light most of the day. "See? We'll roll the glows out so they get as much sunlight as they can. Then when their glowing good and bright we package them up and store them." She started to empty her bag on the tables.

As she worked, she talked. "Well in theory there's nothing wrong. I see so much when they don't realize I'm watching. Although, if they don't notice me, then no one ever says hi or stops to chat. I guess it gets lonely sometimes, but now I have Boreal so I'm never alone.

"... But... I can't t-treat eveyone like th-thier my family....c-can I?" He looked deeply thoughtful about that though, maybe that would be a very very good attitude for a healer to have. After all, if he though of them sort of LIKE a family, even if he had to maintain a clear head...so that some distance was nessisary, he'd not stutter (at least as much) and he'd perhaps make them feel more cared for.

"A....actually...t-that may be brilliant." He said and flashed her a warm grin. "I TrrrY it." he nodded and then looked considering.

"M...maybe you should k...keep listening too. I like listening...t-too." He was making a concerted effort not to stutter as he helped her roll out the glows.
"Y...you can sa...say hi to me any t-time. I'll try and say the same." He nodded

Wykla gave a soft giggle. "No that would get awkward I guess. And no one can have a family that big." She made a face. "Think of all the nameday presents you'd have to get. No that's impossible." She tried to think of the whole Weyr as her family and just shook her head. No it really wasn't advisable.

She flushed slightly at his grin, keeping her eyes on her hands as they spread out the glows. No one had ever told her she had a good idea before. She rather liked it. "I'll try thinking of you as my brother too, if it might help. I haven't had a family like holders do. The whole Weyr raises kids. Since you don't have any of your family here, we can then at least pretend we are." It might help her loneliness or it might not. For Wykla, it was worth a try.

She nodded. "I don't think I could stop. What would I do if I wasn't listening?" Wykla gave a smile. "Thanks, I will." It seemed so strange. How everything seemed a little brighter when she had a friend...
