Captain_Shinzo Take a number. Go to Georgia, tell someone with a big-a** mouth you're non-religious, and suddenly everyone knows you're agnostic, half the people think your a satanist, the churches in the town double, and "Trust God" signs show up everywhere. Gotta love that. That's how my family is. And that is why I do not talk to them about my issues.

Happily enough, I live in New England, tucked safely away from the bible belt states and their surrounding area. Yes, the population is still overwhelmingly christian, but I'm usually treated as more of a minority group than someone who has "lost their way". The down side is that the one thing I do get s**t for is being a Republican. Ah, America.

Blakemore Is anybody else having a hard time being taken seriously? When people find out I'm an atheist, they automatically assume I'm claiming to be one because I think it'd make me look "cool", or I "hate myself". Then, if I bother telling them why I'm an atheist, they think I'm looking for pity, so I just try and ignore them, but yet, it still bothers the hell out of me. And I don't see how I'm looking for pity, seeing as the events behind the reason happened years before I was born, so they don't effect me, but my family. Is anybody having a hard time being taken seriously, do people spew out "lol im an atheist i'm so dark" when you happen to mention you are one? It bothers me to no end, I was raised an atheist, and I don't reject a god, I merely don't have one. I guess it's because I'm only fifteen, and they think I can't have any aspect of my life figured out, but the funny thing is: I do. My mother taught me my options, she lets me and my siblings decide for ourselves, and I simply can't believe in a god after stories she told me about our family and things I've witnessed myself. Face it. The Poster Boy for Atheism is an emo preteen having attitude and saying "Wahhh! PROVE G-d to me! I dare you! Prove it! You guys are idiots! Wahhh!" just to be difficult. If you're not being taken seriously on Gaia, I blame the Morality and Religion Subforum. If you're not being taken seriously in real life, blame those emo preteens who gave all you guys a bad name.

Aakosir This is why I do not talk about being pagan. My brother treats me like a moron already and calls me a witch, which I am, but the way he does it is very disrespectful and degrading. So I just keep it to myself. My fiance is supportive of me so he's the only person I really need to talk to about it. Yeah... The Poster boy of Paganism is a braces-face preteen trying to be cool by saying "Ooooooh I'm a witch and I can cast spelllls wooooooooh." But then again, the Poster boy of Judaism is a bespectacled whitebread square who's allergic to everything and a total wimp, eternally clipping coupons no matter how lame it makes him look. And the poster boy of Christianity is a bigot who blindly believes everything his parents say and just has to force it down the throat of everyone else. Unfortunate how these stereotypes work.

Religious stereotypes suck. However, if someone is bagging on you for you're religion because of their understanding of a majority, that's just a little tip you probably shouldn't be hanging around them. It has it's pros and cons, if you think being made fun of is a con.
The pro is that it kinda weeds out those kids that are worth being around. Now I just need to weed through the fellow Atheists of mine that aren't scene/emo kids trying to be "different" or rebellious like Lummany so truthfully noting,

I'm not entirely sure how to respond to that...o_o Welcome to the South of both religious and political idiocracy. It's silly.

I can't stand those people... My brother used to say s**t about me being a witch... He really has no clue what I even believe so I would try to educate him, but I would just end up getting in to a fight with him...
