I think your voice would be quite lovely in a choir, Tereth remarked, stepping up beside Eltimioth and giving her an affectionate nudge. And more than fit to be bragged about. You are already quite lovely as it is.
Shameless flirt, S'ren thought dryly before replying to E'lai's earlier remark. "Well, if I am really as 'doomed' as you claim, then it sounds like I may not be the only one. I think Tereth must have been hired by that girl in secret to act as a recruiter."
The Brown's eyes whirled in amusement again. I only speak truth.

If dragons had eyelashes, E'lai could swear Eltimioth would be batting them as she replied to the brown. You are too kind~ I am sure your voice would be better than mine, though. There was a pause--a little too ominous for E'lai's liking given the unstated subject--and then Eltimioth bespoke E'lai privately. I promised Tereth I would ask you--since I am somewhat soon to rise, would it be agreeable if he gave chase?
E'lai froze. WHAT?! And normally Eltimioth was so good about trying to avoid such awkward outcomes! Not that he hadn't had his share of Flights that didn't end the way he would've preferred but...with someone like S'ren whom he was a close friend of--the greenrider shuddered. Why?!
Oh. There is a girl Tereth is trying to get to stay for the Hatching, and we thought having her act as a stand-in on S'ren's side would help, Eltimioth said nonchalantly. There would be stand-ins, of course!
E'lai sighed deeply--he'd held his breath for some time, it seemed. You about gave me a heart attack--say that sort of thing earlier!
Sorry~ She didn't sound very sincere.
"I think the Harpergirl's choir might be the least of our problems," E'lai said dryly at last.

S'ren did not like the way that E'lai froze up suddenly. Not at all. ... Tereth, just what are those two speaking about? he asked warily, figuring that the Brown might be privy to the current conversation.
It is a private conversation. I do not know what they are discussing,he replied simply, although he too was curious.
Lovely. S'ren waited patiently (anxiously) as the two spoke, and eventually the Greenrider let out a sigh and came back to the present. "Do I even want to know what that conversation was about?" he asked carefully, somehow getting the feeling that he wouldn't much like the answer. Ruby chirped questioningly on his shoulder, wondering what all of the tense emotions were about. Her large cousins seemed calm enough after all.

E'lai did not immediately answer S'ren, opting to return to the table where the alcohol lay and careful not to disturb the sleeping gold firelizard on his shoulder as he moved. He poured two very generous drinks, handed one to S'ren and kept the other for himself. "Eltimioth apparently is fancying Tereth," E'lai said, still sounding very cynical--and who could blame him? "She suggested we get stand-ins," he added, taking a deep drink from his glass.
Eltimioth did not seem apologetic in the slightest, though she did make sure her comments were for Tereth alone as she told the brown, I'd forgotten to tell him until just now. Still, he did not say no...

S'ren felt his stomach fill with dread the moment E'lai said the words 'fancying' and 'Tereth'. Oooooh this was not good. He knew his dragon had been fond of the Green for a good many Turns now, but fortunately the Brown had always been respectful enough of his and E'lai's friendship not to ever pursue her. With Eltimioth bringing up the subject herself however, things did not at all bode well for them. He took a long drink himself before answering. "Stand-ins would be preferable to the alternative," he said with a heavy sigh, sitting back down in his previous seat. "When is she due to rise?" No, he did not like this situation one bit. Not at all. Still... it would be best to plan ahead then to be caught unaware... The Brownrider suppressed a shudder.
That is fine. Things have been quite busy. And truth be told he had forgotten all about that plan himself (although he was pleasantly surprised to be reminded of it). He was also encouraged that his rider hadn't outright rejected the notion, although he was quite privy to the complete and utter dread that His was currently feeling. A stand-in would leave you happier than than you ended up in that last flight.
Do not remind me of that. Ever. It did not happen. Suddenly there wasn't enough alcohol to wash out the mental images. Ah, the tribulations that came with being a heterosexual dragon rider of anything below a Bronze... Well, even Bronzes could chase Greens on occasion.

"You're telling me," the greenrider muttered. No matter how bad S'ren thought he had it, E'lai could assure him heterosexual male greenriders had it even worse. "And as for when--soon. If not before the Hatching, it won't be long after," he said, making a face. "She thinks sooner but she's been off before in guessing, so there's some uncertainty." He usually preferred to not dwell on the subject or keep too close of track about it, and generally just resigned himself to the outcome, whatever it might be, but this was an entirely different matter.

"Hm, lovely." At this point S'ren honestly wished that he could 'bespeak' E'lai in private, simply so they wouldn't have to discuss this matter in front of their dragons. There would be no hiding it from them however.
The worst part was that in the end it was somewhat his call as to whether or not he let this happen. He could ask (beg) Tereth not to chase after her, but given how long the Brown had been waiting for such an opportunity... it almost seemed cruel to deny him. And really, a stand-in wouldn't be so bad... Terribly awkward to arrange, but no where near as awkward as things would be without them. There was probably some random and lovely Weyrperson he could kindly ask the favor of...
You could always ask Ofelia, Tereth suggested helpfully. You two are already familiar with one another, and you enjoyed her quite well.
Yes, she was certainly an option. Didn't make the asking of the favor any less awkward though. "... I suppose we'd best start searching then. It'd be better to get this set up sooner rather than later." And even if Tereth should fail to catch her, the stand-in could work well still for the after flight tension.
I will not fail, the Brown said resolutely, holding his head up high as his eyes whirled with confidence. I will not let any other catch her. Of that he was determined.
