As she splashed through the shallows and then raced up the bank, Xan thumbed her nose at S'ren before coming to a halt with a good-natured laugh. "Well, you know us blues," she grinned, "seen as we don't have the endurance to last out for too long we gotta make the most of speed and agility... and cheating."

Still grinning, the curvy rider flung herself down on the bank and folded her hands comfortably behind her head, gazing up at the blue skies above... She wished she really was a dragon sometimes; it would be easy if you just forgot about things that worried you. Shaking herself interally, Xan pushed said worries down again. She'd sort it tomorrow. It would all be fine. It would.

"Maybe we should have a race on our dragons," she suggested, sitting up again with a grin. "Or two races, a short one and a long one. We'd know who was going to win, but any excuse for a good fly, right?"

S'ren reached the shallows and bank not too long after Xan had, and he was content to sit down near her and take a moment to relax. He had to smile at her challenge. "Hm, that sounds like an interesting prospect. Tereth, are you up for flying again so soon?" He and his dragon had been airborne for quite a while before coming to the lake after all.

The Brown resurfaced at the question. I am willing if Opeth is, he replied simply, turning his attention back onto the blue. The brief swim had gone a long way in giving him a second wind, and he felt sufficiently cooled off to continue. He could at least handle two brief races.

"C'mon Opeth," Xan wheedled both mentally and aloud, "you know you want to."

"No," the blue, still languishing on the bottom, addressed his grumble both to His and to Tereth and blew an annoyed stream of bubbles, "I do not."

He did want to, she could tell he wanted to, but he just couldn't admit to liking anything. Well, she supposed she'd just have to give him an excuse then. "Opeth blue-butt," she called, getting back to her feet, "if you don't shift that rear of yours up here and come flying right now, I'll start singing the song about the tunnel snake, and I don't think anybody wants that."

Another stream of bubbles rose to the surface closely followed by a blue head, which was scowling as best a dragon could. Notably, however, flicks of green ran through his dull orange eyes. "Very well," Opeth groused, "but only to avoid all of those horrible innuendos." He knew that Xan knew that he was quite pleased to have been persuaded, and in fact that everybody else probably did too, but that didn't mean he was giving up his act. Hissing under his breath, the blue waded out of the water and regarded his rider expectantly. "Well, let's get this over with then."

Tereth regarded the interaction between Opeth and His with some amusement. The blue truly was an odd fellow, but underneath all the grousing he was actually fairly personable. Not that anyone should ever actually say such a thing to him of course.

As the blue walked out of the water, so did Tereth. Come, Mine. Let us race.

"Yes, yes, I'm coming," he replied, walking over to his dragon and climbing atop of him. To Xan he called out, "Speed or Endurance race first?"

"Uuuh... speed first," Xan said with a nod. "After endurance, Opeth'll be too worn out to race anymore, poor puny guy that he is."

Not even a heartbeat after the words left her mouth, Xan found herself face down in the sand. From the grumpy rumbling above her and the pressure on her back, she figured out that Opeth had decided to push her over and pin her down.

"I am not puny," he told her sniffly, "I am a normal sized blue. You would just have preferred a gold, wouldn't you? You swap now if you could."

With her face in the sand, all Xan could muster in verbal response was: "Mmfh!" After a few moments of flailing around, the pressure on her back lifted, and Xan clambered back to her feet spitting sand. "Alright," she snorted and dusted herself free of sand as best she could, "perfectly normal sized blue, and no I didn't want a gold more than you, and I wouldn't swap you for any other dragon, and you know that so quit fishing for compliments." Shooting a grin over at S'ren and Tereth, and ignoring Opeth's angry hiss at her letting them know what had been passing between the pair of them, the black-haired rider clambered up onto her seething partner's back.

"I should fly up into the clouds and then drop you," the blue complained, "you are nothing but an annoyance to me... except when you're oiling me. I suppose I'll keep you just for that." He knew she wouldn't have wanted a gold more than him - she was His after all - but he wished she hadn't basically told Tereth and his rider that he'd said he thought she would even though he knew she didn't. She really was a pain, and yet she was His. He couldn't have chosen anyone else. He needed her, her stupid annoyingness balanced him, even if it did piss him off at the same time.

From the blue's reaction, S'ren gathered that he hadn't actually wanted His to reveal their conversation aloud. Ah well, what was done was done, and the brownrider didn't particularly think much of it. "Speed it is then," he replied easily, looking forward to the race.

Once both riders were situated and ready, the dragons launched themselves up into the air, taking to hovering above the lake once they were up high enough. Does that point over there look like a good mark for a speed race? Tereth asked the other dragon in a good natured manner, indicating the place he meant with a gesture of his head. He likely wouldn't win this, but he still didn't mind the challenge of it. He needed to work on his speed anyway.

"That will suffice," Opeth agreed with a rumble, shifting his shoulders and flexing his wings in readiness. "We'll go on your mark," he added to Tereth, "seen as you have quite a disadvantage already." He could have been a brown, big enough to get some respect... But if he'd been brown, he wouldn't have chosen Xan, would he?... Now wasn't the time to ponder things like that though, now was the time to give this joker a thorough thrashing.

Grinning, Xan secured herself with the damp riding straps - she'd have to give them a good oiling later on - and turned to S'ren. "Ready? Sounds like Tereth gets to call the start!"

"All set here!" S'ren called back, waiting patiently for their dragons to start the race.

How very kind of you, the brown replied, amused by the offer. Hovering naught but a moment longer, he said, Well then, let us start! With a powerful thrust of his wings the brown propelled himself forward through the air, doing his best to lengthen his form and add to the speed. He may not have been likely to win against a smaller and more agile blue, but that didn't mean he wasn't going to give the speed race his best effort.

"Go!"

Luckily, Xan had already been braced for the start of the race; by the time Opeth bothered to let her know he was going to give chase, he was already off. Grinning manically to herself, the rider flattened herself along her lifemate's neck so as to cause as little drag as possible. "Go get'em Opeth!"

He intended to. The brown's greater power had given him quite an initial burst of acceleration, but the blue knew he could make the gap up. Wings practically blurring with speed, Opeth strove to draw level with, and then overtake, Tereth. He was not going to lose a speed race to some hulking brute brown.

Despite the fact that Opeth was catching up, Tereth still did his best to power forward. There wasn't much farther to the designated finish line, and if he kept up this speed he might not be that far behind the other at the end.

S'ren had likewise flattened himself along his dragon's neck, although at this point the move was just as much for himself as it was for Tereth. The amount of wind being generated from the race was quite intense.

As they had discussed, the outcome of the race was something of a forgone conclusion. What annoyed Opeth as he streaked across the finish line was that it hadn't been as big a victory as it could have been; Tereth couldn't have been more than a length behind him, might even have been less than that. "I should have started sooner," the blue groused to his rider as he slowed and looked for a spot to land, "I should have beaten the big brute by more than that."

"Oh be nice," Xan snorted and gave her dragon's neck a reassuring slap, "we won; what more do you want? Besides, it was a friendly race, it's not the end of the world. Just accept that you won, and that he's not as much of a slow slug as you expected."

"You are so laid back I wonder that you ever manage to stand up at all," Opeth replied sniffily, landing lightly before turning to look up at Tereth. "You're not as slow as I thought you would be," he said gruffly, "for a brown, you did alright." Xan would have pestered him if he hadn't said something like that; he hadn't said it just because he was slightly impressed by the larger dragon or anything.

Nice job, Tereth, S'ren remarked, patting his brown's neck affectionately after the race was over. They may not have won, but he was impressed with how well they had faired against the blue. Jokingly, he said, I think somone's been training to catch a certain green.

I will win the next time, he replied confidently, though he spoke of the Flight, not of the race. The brown angled downward to land after Opeth had, and his eyes whirled contently at the blue's words. Thank you. You flew quite quickly yourself. I imagine in the endurance race you may pull far ahead of me.

"Good race, Xan," S'ren said with a smile from atop of the brown's neck. "So, how far shall we travel for the endurance race?"

"Hu, good question," Xan frowned thoughtfully, stroking her dragon's shoulder absentmindedly as she pondered. "I guess we could do a few laps of the edges of the lakes?" she suggested. "I don't know how long Opeth will be able to keep going after that little sprint, but we'll see I guess!" They'd just go as fast as they could, she figured, seen as there was no way they'd win the endurance race it would be fun to see how much distance Opeth could put between them and Tereth before he started flagging.

"A long way," Opeth insisted to Xan, "his speed in that race was a fluke, and I was still accelerating anyway." Right. No chance he'd nearly been beaten in speed by a brown. He hadn't been ready, that was all.

"Suuuure," Xan grinned and patted her lifemate gently, "just you keep telling yourself that, slowpoke."

"You are pushing your luck, Mine," the striped blue groused, twisting his head around to glower at his stupid rider.

Xan just grinned, and asked of her partner: "What else is new?"
PostPosted: Wed Nov 17, 2010 12:43 pm

"That works," S'ren replied, surveying the proposed distance. Normally they could probably make a few laps around that fairly easily, but they'd already been flying for several hours earlier on...

I can make it, the brown insisted, also surveying the perimeter of the lakes. I've enough stamina left for this race.

I'm not going to let you overtax yourself, the brownrider replied before addressing Xan again. "Two laps sound good to you?" One lap around all three lakes was already a rather long way. Two should be sufficient to test endurance without completely wearing both dragons out.

I could do three.

No.

"Sounds fine," Xan agreed, checking that her riding straps were still secure, "I reckon Opeth can cope with that. If not, we can always drop out."

"I will not drop out," Opeth huffed, turning his head to shoot his rider another glare, "and I will make a good showing, too." He refused to embarrass himself in front of this stupid brown. He would give this race his all, not two ways about it. Turning to Tereth, he said; "I hope you are ready to chase after me. I will probably finish both laps before you can do one." Probably not, he knew that, but he couldn't help posturing; he wasn't going to let anyone think that he was weak.
