Dancing Melon It's really rare for couples to bloom from the same instrument in my band ... it's happened before, but it doesn't really last long. I'm a tuba player and my boyfriend plays alto sax and we've been together for nearly 3 years. Then my best friend plays clarinet and her boyfriend plays trombone.
Also, a kind of funny thing is that most of the guy tubas that have been through the section since I've been there have either dated a flute player or had a crush on one. It's strange. And then us girl tubas tend to like saxes. A girl who used to play tuba at our school dated a tenor sax player for a while.
... Now that I think about it, we tend to ignore ages as well. It's rare for us to stay within our grade, even though I do. But whatever. yeah my band is the exact same way. I play flute and my boyfriend is a trumpet player. We had a tuba player date a clarinetist, then later an alto sax. Our flutes mainly went for brass players. Either tuba or trumpet. We do have a few percussion-percussion couples, but it is wierd. we also do not care about ages in my band. I'm a sophmore next year and my boyfriend is a senior next year.

@ ButterflyKissies03 ;; Haha, yeah, we've had a few "cougar" issues too. My sophomore year there was a senior trumpet player who was dating a freshman tenor sax. Now that I think about it, most of the age difference relationships I can think of in my bad involve an older girl and a younger boy ... interesting.
@ xoxBlueEyedGirl ;; Yeah, I've noticed that woodwinds and brass like to pair up. Or the brass guys like girls in the color guard ... except for the tubas. We hate the guard. xD But the percussionists in my band seem to be too close in a brother-sister way to really date each other.
I completely forgot to mention that people in band don't usually date outside the band. There are a few people who can drift between different cliques who have dated outside the band, but the "real" band members only date other band members. There have been so many relationships and so much drama ... but at the end of the day most of us love each other. =P

my band mates don't really date each other. I guess it's 'cause we think it's kind of awkward.

well i guess it's half and half; there's one couple (trumpets) who've been going out for like three years (even after he graduated), but she's such a whore (i would feel bad for him if he wasn't a jerk)
--though i guess the ones with different sections usually last longer (kinda a 'dating in the workplace' thing maybe) -i went out with a clarinet player and like a percussionist, but i'm a tromboner

I don't know much about other sections, but drumline and colorguard at my school date each other. hands down. it's really quite strange, actually...I just recently broke up with my bf who was a drummer so I guess I'm no different but the only drummer I know of that's in a relationship with a non-guard girl is dating someone in orchestra. xd

wow i never really thought about it before...maybe cuz theres not a whole lot of variety in your section...like, a lot of sections are mostly one gender and maybe a couple of the other, you know? there is one perc. couple (even though she plays flute and he played sousa for marching) and then this other chick who does a lot of perc. stuff (but plays sax for marching) likes/used to date him and its a very weird thing and i'm glad i'm not really friends with any of them...and i think theres a future french horn couple (with a guy that has already dated another french horn) but the rest of the band is like snare & flute, guard & euphonium/bassoon/bass guitar/bari sax/tuba...(i think thats it...yeah thats one person...), guard & sax, clarinet & trombone/assistant DM, clarinet & trumpet, perc. & sax, euphonium & trumpet, euph. & tuba...yeah thats only some of them...and those are mostly upperclassmen ones that come to mind. idk all the little freshmen and their sob stories lol (that was not intended to be mean, btw mrgreen )

We'd have a few couples within the band that played the same instrument (clarinets), and some that didn't(flute and sax), so it was pretty evenly divided. Ultimately, I just love the concept of musical instruments "falling in love with each other," since each one has its own "personality." I have yet to see a piccolo player with an oboist since both are known to be obsessed with tuning! My band director is a euphonium and his wife is an oboe, and sometimes I like to visualize the connections between the two instruments.

Relationship wise, it's cute to have two people playing the same instruments together. But band competition wise... Joust to the death, or until one of them gets first chair.
If I were to date a person who plays the same instrument as I... "Imagines" Trombones: I don't think I would fit in to those obnoxious bastards (Excluding this one boy, lol.) French Horns: I like them as friends, RP buddies, weirdos. Bassoons: I would be a LESBIAN!
But anyway. I've dated a trombone player freshman year(Only lasted for a week), and during my sophomore year, I've dated a clarinet player. (We're still going strong. 8 months in, baby!!!)
I think we have... Alto sax and tenor sax/alto sax Trumpet/Clarinet Trumpet/French Horn Trumpet/Trombone as other couples.

I play clarinet, and my boyfriend is a baritone player. Relationships between woodwind players and low brass players is common in our band.

Riku Elmwick WARNING!!!!! RELATIONSHIPS IN THE SAME SECTION NEVER WORK OUT!!! Unless both of them quit band... xd That happened in my section. My freshman year there was a junior girl dating a sophomore guy in my section. They quit band the following year, but as far as I know, they're still together.
