Thinking over what Nenetl was proposing, Kali shrugged in agreement. "I suppose. Women and children are pretty important." She nodded, trying to seem wise beyond her years, but failing, simply looking like a child pretending to be grown up.
"'Cept for my brother. He talks waaaaay too much. I think he's rubbing off on me sometimes, so I try to avoid him." She stopped herself from continuing her rant, realizing that a rant would defeat the purpose of complaining about her brother talking too much.

"There's never such a thing as talking too much!" The lioness' face lit up, smiling wide. "Why, what if he didn't talk at ALL? Then the world would be a bit more boring, because you wouldn't know what he had to say!" The lioness paused, one ear twitching. "The birds always talk, if you think about it. And the frogs and crickets. You always hear them during the day, evening, and night, and in the morning." Her smile returned, almost as if it couldn't stay away. "Imagine if your brother talked like a bird... Then he might talk too much, because a bird is never quiet."

Kali wondered what it would be like if her brother really were a bird, maybe then she could tie something around his mouth when he was being annoying. Or when he was teasing her. She pondered this for a few seconds and then smiled. Then again perhaps Nenetl was right, perhaps life was better if he talked, what if one day he said something really really important?
She sighed inwardly, oh well, she'd have to put up with him, but that didn't mean she couldn't bully him a bit.

"Well, I don't think I'd want him to talk like a bird, I think that would be too loud and high pitched, my ears would ache for days! Sometimes Momma has to put him to sleep before the rest of us, just so we can get to sleep! Otherwise he just wants to talk all night long."

The lioness' ears pricked. All night, eh...? "Perhaps he should meet Zeru... She can't be up in the day but has to stay up at night... She's awful lonely with no other cubs to talk to..." Nenetl just wished there were others in the swamp who could keep the cub company. The poor baby..

Blinking the cub frowned. A cub who couldn't be out in the day? That was something she had never heard of. "Why can't Zeru be outside in the day? It would be awfully hard to get anything done, even most food is asleep during the night."
Continuing to frown Kali thought about what it must be like to not have anyone to talk to, because they were all asleep, and the thought saddened her. She would never be able to live like that.

"Well, you see... Zeru is albino... Her eyes may be red, but that's all blood. So the sun hurts her eyes." The lioness sighed sadly, ears to the side. She hoped Zeru found a friend soon. She needed it.

A rumble ran through Nenetl's belly, and her ears pricked back up. "Oh! I think it's dinner time!" She looked at the sky, measuring the position of the sun. Yes, that was about right... She smiled at the cub, taking a couple steps. "I should go, then. It's fun to play, but there's still always work to do. It was nice talking to you, Jua!" Pushing past a bush, she headed off to hunt.

Kali wiggled, then shook, trying to get a bit more dry then she was. Not that it mattered by the time she walked back to her parents, she would be dry enough for her mother not to ask questions.

Happy to have made a friend, Jua Kali skipped off into the more dry areas of the swamp.
